Could be launched in 2015

Our spies have already snapped photos of the Mercedes S-Class Convertible but Mercedes' head of research and development has just confirmed the existence of the model.

Thomas Weber declined to go into specifics but Automotive News is reporting the model will be based on the S-Class Coupe and go on sale in the United States in late 2015. While Mercedes previewed an S-Class Convertible with the four-door Ocean Drive concept, the production model will be a two-door cabrio with a retractable soft top.

Engine options will carryover from the coupe so expect choices to include a powerful V12 and an entry-level 4.7-liter V8 that produces 455 HP (335 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It remains unclear if there will be AMG variants but if there is we can expect the S63 AMG Convertible to have a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with 585 HP (436 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque.
