Nissan Announces Its Return To Super Bowl

For the first time since 1997, Nissan is joining in on the fun of advertising at the Super Bowl after announcing that it had bought a 60-second spot during Super Bowl XLIX, which is set to air February 1, 2015 on NBC. The automaker announced that the return to major events like the Super Bowl is tied into its "Big Moments" marketing strategy. Considering that the company is right in the middle of its best sales year ever in the US, the timing behind its return to the Super Bowl does make a lot of sense.

The company hasn't announced what kind of commercial it plans to unveil during the game, but multiple reports have tied Nissan's 60-second spot with Los Angeles-based advertising agency TBWA/Chiat/Day.

Nissan's return to the Super Bowl also comes at a time when a handful of auto companies traditionally involved during the game are holding on to their advertising budgets. While Toyota and Mercedes have already bought time slots during the game, Jaguar and Lincoln has announced that it's not getting involved this year after being prominently featured during Super Bowl XLVIII. Even Volkswagen, which has dominated the Super Bowl narrative in the past four years with hit ads like "The Force" is sitting out this year.

The timing of these absences is a boon to Nissan as it seeks to continue the momentum generated by its "Big Moments" campaign. Don't be surprised if its ad focuses on some of its new models, including the 2015 Murano, which is set to be launched later in the year.

What's clear is that Nissan wants to use events like the Super Bowl to promote its new products in one of the biggest television audiences throughout the year. It might have been a while since Nissan last appeared during the Super Bowl, but none of that will matter now that the company has booked its return ticket to the game.

Who Has It Bigger? Nissan Says The GT-R Nismo!

Well this is a bit strange and embarrassing. Not too long ago at the Academy Awards, Ellen DeGeneres managed to crash Twitter when she posted a celebrity selfie. Some people even went as far as to say that the internet itself was broken. Recently Paper Magazine decided it wanted to cause an incredible viral sensation by posting pictures of Kim Kardashian and her enormous booty in various states of undress accompanied with the hashtag #BreakTheInternet.

Nissan has been on point with making fun of people and situations on Twitter lately - just look at the Nyan-cat GT-R joke - and they decided that Kim Kardashian would make the perfect target. The main photo in question shows Kardashian balancing a champagne glass on her large posterior. Nissan's simple response is a rear three-quarter view of the new GT-R Nismo with a champagne glass perched upon its rear wing. The photo is complimented by little more than the text "Ours is bigger."

It is a equal parts silly, abnormal, and desperate. I love that Nissan has a social team that is not afraid to take chances on obscure social campaigns, but sadly this one feels more like a sad grab for attention by piggy-backing on what was promising to be a lucrative social movement. That said, I won't complain about more high-resolution photos of the GT-R Nismo floating around the internet.

Video: Nismo Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

width="460" height="370" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/h8Bj0p97x3Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

30 years ago, Nissan created its motorsports and high-performance division, Nismo. That was back in 1984. Now, it's 2014, and Nismo is still alive and healthy as can be. Over the years, it's been largely responsible for a lot of Nissan's success in racing, so it's only fitting that Nissan has released a commemorative video to celebrate Nismo's 30th anniversary.

As with all trips down memory lane will show you, the video showcases Nismo's history, beginning with its establishment in Omori, Tokyo, before running through all of its motor racing accomplishments. If you weren't old enough to remember those years, Nismo was a formidable presence in a lot of racing series all over the world. It competed in Asia, and Europe, spread across numerous racing disciplines, including the 1986 Le Mans 24-Hour Race where Nismo first competed using the Nissan R85V.

High-level racing success for Nismo continued well into the 90's and in the 2000's. Along the way, Nismo also began expanding its reach by beginning aftermarket work on a handful of Nissan models, none more prominent than on the Skyline GT-R and its eventual successor, the Nissan GT-R.

Congratulations on 30 years of success and innovation, Nismo! We'd buy you a round of sake on us if we could, but since we can't, we'll just raise our metaphorical glasses and toast to more years of success, both on and off the race track.

Kampai!

Nissan Rogue Select

Essentially a simplified version of the 2014 Nissan Rogue, the 2014 Rogue Select is the kind of what-you-see-is-what-you-get compact SUV that leaves everything it's got at the front door. It doesn't come with a lot of major surprises, offering itself as is and little in the way of added surprises.

It figures that for a compact SUV that doesn't have a whole lot of optional equipment, the Rogue Select is being offered for budget-conscious owners. For its price (less than $20,000 for the base model) you can make a case that the Rogue Select is a good way to go just so you can say you have a compact SUV in your garage.

But the other prevailing thought is the extra money you can shell out for other models that have a lot more to offer than the Rogue Select. Nissan probably doesn't mind that thinking since it still has the 2014 Rogue to satisfy those needs.

It's just that in case you're on a tight budget, Nissan has you covered with the Rogue Select.

Nissan Juke Nismo "The Dark Knight Rises"

Straight from the Cross Promotion 101 handbook comes this one-off project car from Nissan and Warner Bros., celebrating the UK release of Christopher Nolan's blockbuster movie, "The Dark Knight Rises" on DVD and Blu-Ray.

As only Nissan can, the Japanese automaker decided to build a one-off Juke Nismo crossover solely to promote the new DVD and Blu-Ray. Appropriately enough, the crossover is called The Dark Knight Rises Juke Nismo.

The crossover features plenty of Batman-inspired details, something that you should expect from a car promoting The Caped Crusader. Matte-black paint was used to give the Juke Nismo a Batmobile-like appearance. A shark fin antenna was also installed in lieu of the traditional set-up on the Juke, and aluminum bat badges have been plastered in various parts of the Juke Nismo, including the front grille and the tailgate. Rounding out the exterior modifications is a set of 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels with red detailing.

Moving to the interior, Nissan gave it a Batman-inspired look, beginning with Bat logos on the kick plates. Reflective Bat badges on the suede-trimmed Nismo sports seats' headrests pays homage to the inspiration for the one-off project car. The puddle lights in the door mirrors are particularly cool because they project the Bat symbol on the floor area by the doors. The same setup can be found on the uplighter, projecting the same Bat symbol on the headlining.

Unfortunately, the Juke Nismo Dark Knight Rises will neither be sold nor be sent off to the auction block. The question of how to get it has yet to be answered, although expect the Juke Nismo Dark Knight Rises to be a prize in some sort of competition down the road.

Based on the new Nissan Juke Nismo, which goes on sale in the UK in January 2013, The Dark Knight Rises Juke Nismo features the same 200PS (197-horsepower) 1.6-liter turbocharged engine driving the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, giving it a 0 to 62mph (0 to 100 km/h) time of 7.8 seconds. It also gets a Nismo body kit and upgraded suspension.
