Future Chevrolet Corvette, CUV Teased In TV Show Clip?

In a recent episode of Americarna on the Velocity channel, Ray Evernham has a quick chat with Ed Welburn, global vice president of design for General Motors, to see some of what it takes to bring vehicle design concepts to the real world. The clip is remarkable in that it shows the inner workings of how GM develops its future cars and concept vehicles, but if you look close, there might also be a few sneak peeks to enjoy.

First, Welburn shows a full-scale clay model of what looks to be a small crossover, and the interesting part of this is that you can just barely make out the existence of a Chevrolet bowtie on the wheels. It would appear that this model is inspired by a sketch - some of which can be seen on the wall at around the 1:17 mark. Could this be the next-gen Chevy Equinox?

The true highlight of the video comes when Welburn gets to designer Christine Park, who says she's working on the design of a "Chevy sports car." There are a few different vehicle designs visible on her computer monitor, but the one that sticks out the most is the yellow vehicle wearing the signature crossed flag emblem of the Corvette on its nose. The short nose and vented hood could very well be the oft-rumored, mid-engined Corvette named "Zora." Of course, the Corvette's chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, recently denied rumored of this car's existence.

Video: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Testing At Nurburgring

width="460" height="370" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/rW23KpJcvjg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

If you haven't been living under a rock lately, you already know Chevrolet is working on the sixth-generation Camaro, due to arrive in 2015. Testing is already underway, with a camouflaged prototype being spotted near and on the Nurburgring track in September 2014. We received a bevy of spy shots as soon as the pony car hit the German pavement and although that was enough to make out some of details and speculate upon its new styling, we have yet to see the new Camaro in action. Thankfully, the wait ends right now, as the first video footage featuring the muscle car on the Nurburgring has hit the Interwebz.

Of course, the video doesn't add to what we already know so far about the new Camaro, but it does reveal the exhaust note of the V-8 fitted under the hood. There's no trace of supercharger whine in the soundtrack, so it's safe to assume we're looking at the naturally aspirated Camaro SS. Chevy has yet to spill the details on the greasy bits, but we expect it to drop a detuned version of the Corvette Stingray's 6.2-liter, LT1 V-8 under the Camaro's hood. It is also likely the manufacturer will offer a dual-mode exhaust system on the SS. Output figures should sit in the 430-horsepower range, right above the 2015 Mustang GT.

Naturally, the 2016 Camaro range will be completed by a V-6 unit, likely to return with the same 3.6-liter displacement, but word has it Chevy is also pondering a turbocharged four-cylinder as an answer to the Mustang's 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit. We should find out more about that soon enough. Meanwhile, click play to watch the 2016 Camaro SS lap the "Green Hell."

Next-Generation Chevrolet Corvette Could Feature a Mid-Engine Setup

If you're one of those gearheads who has his fingers crossed for a mid-engined Corvette, then this report will likely keep your hopes up. According to Motor Trend, quoting "multiple sources" around General Motors, the next-generation Corvette will have its V-8 engine mounted behind the seats. What's more, the report suggests a mid-engine Corvette could come as soon as the C7-based ZR1 hits the market.

Just as we pointed out back in June 2014, when Chevy trademarked the "Zora" name, Motor Trend also hints that the said moniker will be used on a mid-engined Corvette. A move that would make sense, given that Zora Duntov himself created a mid-engined Corvette prototype in the early 1960s. Dubbed CERV II, the concept also featured a unique AWD system which, at the time, would've helped GM develop one of the most advanced supercars for the road.

Unfortunately, the CERV II never became more than just a concept and Chevrolet never offered supercar. But that could change in a few years if Motor Trend's report proves to be accurate.

Now we know what some of you might be thinking; shifting the Corvette's engine from the front to the middle would be a huge departure from the 'Vette's 60-year-old legacy. Well, not quite. Motor Trend speculates that Chevy is considering a "Corvette family" for the next-generation, C8 model. Specifically, the lineup could include both a familiar, front-engine sports car and a mid-engine supercar.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The Corvette hit showrooms in 1953 with a 150-cubic-inch six-pot under its hood and a 10-plus-second 0-to-60-mph time. It was no speed demon, but it was the foundation that the greatness that is the Corvette was build upon. The C1 Corvette was also the last time we saw a production model without pop-up headlights before the C6 generation debuted in 2005. In 2014, the C7 and its wild, European styling hit the market, giving Ferrari and other premium brands a reason to check out what's going on in America. Following that up was the Z06 in 2015 that made all the Euro supercars stand up and take notice.

With the new 2014 Corvette Stingray already in showrooms, we all knew that we were going to soon see a more powerful version. And now that has become a reality, as Chevrolet revealed the potent 2015 Corvette Z06 at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The Corvette Z06 will keep enthusiasts happy until the the new ZR1 model hits the market, if it ever finds its way onto the market.

Just like the previous Z06, the 2015 model, will be offered with a more aggressive exterior look, a more powerful engine, sport suspension and a new, high-performance brake system. General Motors is also offering an optional Z07 kit that will transform the new Corvette Z06 will deliver unprecedented levels of aerodynamic downforce - in fact the best in any GM model ever.

Updated 06/06/2014: Chevrolet officially confirmed today that the 2015 Corvette Z06 is rated at 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque - which represents a 29 percent increase on the output level and 40 percent more torque. Also, the company confirmed that the Z06 goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2014. Full details on the engine after the jump.

Chevrolet and Mercury Marine Remember the Merc-Powered Corvette ZR-1

Back before the mighty C6 ZR1 rumbled out of Bowling Green with its supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V-8 making 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque, there was a previous king-of-the-hill Corvette that bore the same ZR1 name (though it was hyphenated ZR-1). The C4 ZR-1 saw production from 1990 through 1995 and came with a rather unconventional engine design never before seen powering a Corvette.

The ZR-1's small-block 350 had dual overhead cams and 32 valves.

Sure, DOHC are a commonplace thing found in engines, but this represented uncharted territory for the Chevy small block that had always used a single cam and pushrods to operate the overhead valves. Luckily, General Motors had acquired Lotus in 1986, and soon after the purchase, engineers with Corvette approached Lotus with their plans of building the world's fastest production car. Together the UK-based automaker and The General went to work combining the classic V-8 with the modern DOHC design. The result was named the LT5.

Displacing a familiar 5.7-liters, (or 350 cubic inches, depending when you were born) the LT5 engine produced 375 horsepower, which helped push the ZR-1 Vette to 60 in 4.5 seconds and had a top speed of over 180 mph. The power rose to 405 horses when Lotus redesigned the heads and valvetrain for 1993. Those were stellar numbers 20 years ago.

General Motors had one problem, however. They couldn't handle the extra workload of building the specialized engine. So GM contracted the engines to be built by Mercury Marine,, a company normally associated with boat engines (and no relation to Ford's Mercury division). Only 6,939 C4 Corvette ZR-1s were ever built, but they created a legend only touched years later by the C6 Corvette ZR1.

As part of Mercury's 75-year anniversary, the company is remembering this mighty engine, an dhas placed an example on display at its headquartersI.

Chevrolet Spark

-->

You might be wondering why Chevrolet would be developing the next generation of its popular Spark so soon. After all, 2013 was the Spark's first year in the U.S. While the likeable little subcompact was new to us last year, the overall design has been in production since 2009 and sold in countries around the world as the Chevrolet Beat.

The aging Beat (Spark) is due for a refresh and the General looks to be making a clean sweep.

Not much is know about the prototype seen here as it scurries about during cold-weather testing near the Arctic Circle. The redesign will likely be more evolutionary in nature, and will feature a heavily updated grille as evidenced by the thick camouflaging.

The Spark has sold well in the U.S. over its first year, selling 26,869 units - 35 percent beyond what Chevy had originally forecasted. Worldwide sales total 720,000 units since the model's 2009 introduction.

An all-electricSpark EV came to market for 2014 and has sold over 400 examples in the EV's limited markets of California and Oregon. The EV has a range of 82 miles on a single charge (7 more than the Nissan Leaf), and is powered by an electric motor that produces 140 horsepower and an impressive 400 pound-feet of torque.

The standard gasoline model isn't quite as powerful, as its 1.2-liter I-4 puts out a scant 84 horsepower and 83 pound-feet of torque. But at only 2,269 pounds, the Spark doesn't need much more for its inner-city intended purpose. Both a manual and CVT are available in the gasoline-powered Spark.

Chevrolet Captiva Sport

Posted on 07.18.2013 17:00 by
Tom Burkart

In the 2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport's senior yearbook, the standard headshot would have been replaced by a blank "No Photo Available." This commercial vehicle sits in the fleet-only section of Chevy's U.S. lineup. These models major on sale price and fuel mileage - but typically include few tech or luxury features and zero trendy styling.

The opposite of trendy, the Captiva Sport is eerily familiar on all American roads. By george! It is the stillborn, second-gen Saturn Vue in a bowtie grille! Additional fender flares and chrome accents appear where there were once maroon Saturn badges.

Reviving this car is a special treatment within General Motors, and only replicated with the (also fleet-only) Chevy Caprice PPV that started life as the 2008 Pontiac G8 GT. What this distinction means for the Captiva Sport is that the vehicles have to be delivered directly to a commercial operator, thereby skipping the local retailer in favor of bulk orders.

The Captiva Sport's big news for 2014 is an updated infotainment unit that now offers Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen audio and mobile connectivity.

The Captiva Sport is therefore a work car for people who might otherwise be in a Malibu Classic (yes, it existed..) or a Cruze - neither of which have AWD winter traction.

The larger Chevrolet Equinox is also on the fleet books for virtually identical list prices. How do they compare?

The Corvette Z06 will keep enthusiasts happy until the the new ZR1 model hits the market late in this generation's product cycle.

Updated 01/13/2014: With less than one hour since its official launch, the first images of the new Corvette Z06 leaked on the internet. Additionally, the live reveal is currently underway and we are just minutes away from hearing all there is to know about the new Z06.

10:22 a.m.: During the press conference, GM announced that the Z06 will have more than 625 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque, thanks to its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine, dubbed the LT4. It will also feature an all-aluminum frame that is 60-percent stiffer than last year's frame, a standard carbon-fiber removable top and two transmissions - a standard seven-speed manual with rev matching or an optional eight-speed auto.

Video: Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible in Geneva

The other day at the Geneva Motor Show, Chevrolet unveiled the convertible version for the new Corvette Stingray. Unfortunately, the maker decided to only show us a series of images for the sports convertible, but no video.

Lucky for us though, YouTube user, Marchettino, was in Geneva and he shot some very nice frames of the new Stingray Convertible. Along with the convertible version, you will also see the new Stingray coupe version that made its European debut in Geneva.

Both models are powered by a 6.2-liter V-8 engine that delivers a estimated total of 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph will be made in less than four seconds and, since the convertible version received no structural reinforcements, both models share almost identical power-to-weight ratios.

Watch the video and see if the new Stingray looks better on the show’s floor that it does on the pictures released by GM.

Chevrolet SS Banned in Israel Because the "SS" Reminds Them Of The Nazis

2.

You would think that with Chevrolet’s release of its high-powered SS sports sedan, a lot of countries would be chomping at the bit to have the car come to their roads.

Apparently, that’s not the case in Israel.

According to the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth via the Times of Israel, the Chevrolet SS will not be imported to Israel because it’s "Super Sport" name, or at least the shortened "SS" version of it, is similar to the Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary unit headed by one Heinrich Himmler under Adolf Hitler's long reign of terror in Nazi Germany.

The same Yedioth report quoted Baruch Shuv, manager of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and chairman of the Organization of Partisans, Underground Fighters and Ghetto Rebels, saying that "the use of [the SS] name is very inappropriate."

"It is not a name that will bring them pride or success," Shuv added.

Granted, we understand the position Israel is taking, and we’re not going to belittle the significance of the Jewish people’s plight during one of the most oppressive times in history, but c'mon guys... It's an abbreviation for "Super Sport," not some anti-Jewish conspiracy.

It’s also worth noting that this is the first time Chevrolet is branding the initials SS exclusively and not using the full Super Sport name on the model.

And if Israel has a big and justified problem with the use of the SS name and is taking the measure of keeping the car out of their country, then that's their prerogative.

Most of you already know what the new SS will look like, especially if you have kept track of the news in the past few weeks. First there was the revealing of the Nascar version of the SS and just the other day, Holden uncovered the new VF Commodore. This doesn’t mean that you cannot be excited for tomorrow's reveal, as the new SS will likely adopt a more aggressive and sportier look.

As for what's under the hood, you should expect a V8 engine with an output of at least 430 horsepower.

Stay tuned for more details!
