BMW Will Put The OLED Taillights Into Production Starting With The M2

Light Emitting Diodes, or LEDs, have become utterly prevalent in the automotive industry these days, but BMW is reaching to the next step with OLED technology. Previewed in its M4 Light Concept earlier in 2015, BMW says it's ready to use OLEDs in its next M-division vehicle.

The new acronym stands for Organic Light Emitting Diodes and will likely replace the current crop of LED technology. It's already starting in the television sector, with LG producing the worlds' first OLED TV, which also happens to be one of the thinnest TVs on the market.

The system works by placing thin films of organic material - in this case carbon-based materials - between two conductors. The super small structure means BMW designers can incorporate intricately detailed designs into lighting elements. It's that super small structure that lends OLED its attractiveness. What's more, the OLED bulbs are eco-friendly, containing only trace amounts of Iridium, a non-toxic heavy metal.

As for the next M vehicle, BMW is set to launch its 2016 M2 within the coming months. It's a sure bet its rear end will be graced with OLED taillamps. As for the rest of the car, expect a smaller, meaner version of the M4 Coupe with plenty of power on hand and a fierce appetite for corners.

2015 BMW M5 30 Jahre Special Edition Can Be Yours For $325K

To celebrate 30 years of its mid-size sport sedan, BMW introduced the BMW M5 "30 Jahre M5" special edition last year with just 300 units planned for production globally. Of those, only 30 of those would be making it to the U.S., and only 29 planned for customers; the 30th would remain with BMW for now, with the possibility of being sold off in the future.

Speaking of being sold off, the duPont Registry is listing a 30 Jahre M5 in Heathrow, Florida for $325,000 with 200 miles on the odometer. If you're wondering, these cars sold brand new for $138,275, and that price included an exclusive M Driving School designed specifically for 30 Jahre M5 buyers, which took place last fall.

While that is something the secondhand buyer definitely won't be able to experience, the car itself should make up for that. The limited-edition M5 gets unique 20-inch alloy wheels, a Frozen Dark Silver Metallic matte paint job and plenty of "30 Jahre M5" badges, including those embossed onto the seats. This M5 also squeezes an extra 25 horsepower from the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. increasing output to 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

BMW 335i M Performance Edition

The BMW 3 Series first set rubber on North American soil in 1977, as the replacement for the 2002, leaving the new model with some pretty large shoes to fill. In 2012, the 3 underwent its sixth generational overhaul, which also began the phasing out of the coupe and convertible 3 Series, that would later become the 4 Series. As we continue through the 2015 model year, the 3 Series continues strong, with its most powerful non-M version being the 335i. With its 300 ponies on tap, it's no surprise that BMW Abu Dhabi saw it fit to customize a 2015 335i and post it on Facebook for all of us to drool over.

This one-off Bimmer features the M Sport Line appearance package and enough custom work to make seeing a duplicate unlikely. Fortunately, the Middle Eastern dealership didn't stop after customizing the body, as it did a little wrench work under the hood, too.

The BMW X1 is a fantastic addition to the Bimmer range, as well as to the TopSpeed Garage. During our week testing the M Sport X1 sDrive28i, the car won many friends with its driving environment, striking new-BMW styling crispness and a truly sports-car-like agility versus the larger X3.

The X1 is offered stateside in three trim levels across the turbo four-cylinder 28i and turbo six-cylinder 35i powerplants, with xDrive available across the range. The test car's X1 sDrive28i pairs the base engine with the top M Sport trim level at the top, bringing a beautiful body-color bumper treatment absent from the cheaper 'Sport' and 'X-line' trim packs. The M Sport option also includes a variety of other tasty upgrades, including sports leather seats and handsome special paint and wheel options.

The X1 fills such a successful gap in the entry-level BMW offering that it even caught Audi and Mercedes-Benz flatfooted, with their GLA250 and Audi Q3 competitors still at least a year from reaching American buyers.

The X1 certainly doesn't have the small premium crossover market to itself, but does carve a unique niche with few pretend off-road aspirations and a decidedly performance focus to its V-rated, 18-inch Pirelli's.

This road-going bias helps the X1 to be an agile and playful companion on any stretch of pavement, with a 60 mph sprint just above 6 seconds for both rear- and all-wheel-drive 28i four-cylinders and down to the low 5's for the potent X1 xDrive35i.

All this with a base price just above $30,000 means the X1 is the first affordable BMW entry for crossover shoppers, considering the Acura RDX or the Mini Cooper Countryman.

BMW 2 Series Convertible

BMW announced its new 2 Series convertible, including the M235i and this 228i, in September 2014. While the M235i will be the choice of most enthusiasts and weekend track rats, the standard 228i and the 228i xDrive will be the ones found at Whole Foods and Macy's, and will constitute the bulk of 2 Series sales. That's not a bad thing, however, as the BMW's latest drop top checks all the right boxes for topless automotive fun.

A high-strung, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes boosted by a twin-scroll turbocharger and is backed by an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters or a six-speed manual. The quick-shifting flappy paddle helps the 228i hit 60 mph in a surprising 5.7 seconds. What's more, the 228i's chassis share many of its designs and parts with the 228i coupe, giving it some street cred right out of the box.

The 228i xDrive brings an extra level of usability to the 2 Series Convertible's lineup. With a normal torque split favoring the rear axle, the xDrive 2 has plenty of sport still in its chassis. However, when the weather turns rough, all four wheels grip the road. The xDrive system even makes itself useful in the dry, helping the 228i xDrive knock a tenth of a second off the 228i's 0 to 60 mph time.

While the now-dead 1 Series may have been the first drop-top contender in the premium sub-compact segment, the new 228i and 228i xDrive take the legacy into the future. If 1 Series 130,000 units sold worldwide is any indication of the 2 Series Convertible's potential success, BMW's latest convertible will have no trouble finding homes.

SLR Club Tour Adriatica Photos

15 Mercedes McLaren SLR's (which included 2 Stirling Moss SLR) took part in a 6 day SLR Club Tour Adriatica along the Croatian coast of the Adriatic sea and covered 1000km (MAP). The tour tarted in the city of Zagreb and travelled through Istria, Rovinj, Zadar, Split, Hvar and finally ending up in Dubrovnik. The route was over 600km long and the pictures speak for themselves

BMW X5 with M Performance parts

Next to the 2 Series Coupe we brought you earlier today, BMW also equipped the X5 SUV with a series of updates offered by its M Performance subsidiary. Just like with the coupe, the updated SUV will be available starting March 2014 and includes a series of updates to both the exterior and the interior, plus a more powerful engine.

The X5 xDrive35i received a modified engine control system that increases the final output by 20 horsepower - up to a total of 326 horsepower and 36 pound-feet of torque. The extra power was combined with an optimized accelerator pedal set-up that will improve the spontaneous response of the engine and will optimize performance.

For the X5 xDrive35i BMW is also offering a M Performance silencer system plus a M Performance tailpipe trim elements available either in chrome or carbon.

BMW's illustrious history began during World War I when the now-successful luxury car-builder developed fighter aircraft-engine. At the end of the WWI it switched to developing motorcycles, then in 1929, BMW bought its way into the car industry when it purchased the Dixi Car factory and started developing automobiles - some of its best were elegant roadsters.

The first roadster to roll out of Bimmer's factory was the 315/1, which was based on the 315 saloon. From here, things evolved to the 328, which was one of the most successful roadster ever developed by BM and won the Mille Miglia in many times and the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans.

After the WWII, BMW was in great trouble and it needed a car to rescue it, and BMW thought that car was the 507. It was indeed a great car, with one of the most gorgeous design languages in the era and a powerful engine under the hood. However, because of its high price - $10,500 - the 507 was almost responsible for putting the BMW into bankruptcy. Only 252 units were ever developed, despite BMW's 5,000-units-per-year projection.

Next BMW started to develop the Z series, with the Z1 being the first model. What is very cool about the Z1 is that the doors drop down into the door sills so you can drive it with no doors. Next we had the Z3, Z8 and the current Z4. The black sheep of the family was the Z3, which never really looked or felt like a BMW.

BMW X5 Security Plus Concept

The production version i8 wasn't the only unveiling the Bimmer had coming at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, as BMW also threw together an X5 Security Plus - a concept specially designed to offer all-round protection against violent assault, kidnapping and organized crime.

The concept features high-performance steel moldings and panels that ensure the best protection, even against an AK-47. There is also a specially developed security glass resistant to attack by blunt weapons, while the polycarbonate coating on the inside of the glass provides effective protection against flying splinters. The concept is also equipped with security-specific components and technologies that help you protect yourself against all kinds of attacks.

Along with the safety features, the new X5 Security Plus Concept also offers excellent driveability, thanks to its V-8 TwinPower Turbo engine with 450 horsepower, and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.

BMW also optimized the chassis to compensate for the extra heft that installing these security system creates. This helps assure that the security-detail X5 looks, drives and behaves just like a normal X5.

BMW 1 Series M Coupe by Sportec

Even though it has been out of production for over a year now, the 1 Series M Coupe remains one of the coolest models ever offered by BMW. To sweeten the pot even more, BMW built just 2,700 units, making it one of the most appreciated BMW models.

German tuner, Sportec, obviously loves the 1 Series M, as it is serving up a pair of upgrades for the compact Bimmer. In its natural state, the 1M Coupe is plenty powerful, as it delivers a total of 335 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 332 pound-feet of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. This is enough to launch the compact coupe to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

In Level 1, Sportec reprogrammed the ECU to push the output to a total of 385 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. By our estimation, Level 1 should drop the naught to 60 mph time to about 4.3 seconds.

Level 2 is more complex, as and includes a larger oil cooler, a downpipe with 100-cell metal catalytic converter and a sports air filter. As a result, the TwinPower 3.0-liter in-line-6 engine delivers a total of 420 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which we estimate to drop the 0-to-60 time to just over 4 seconds.

BMW Alpina B3

We are still more than three weeks away from the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but it looks like each day we learn more about the models that will be displayed at the show. One of these models is the new Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo, based on the F30 335i sedan.

According to the first details we have on the new B3, it looks like it will deliver more power and torque than the model it replaces, plus it will be about 20 percent more fuel efficient.

The 3.0-liter turbocharged engine will be tuned to deliver a massive 410 horsepower at 5,500 rpm - quite an update over the standard 300 horsepower offered by the 335i. The engine will be paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and will sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds.

Full details on the new Alpina B3 will be unveiled during its official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The bad news is that, just like with predecessor, the new B3 will not be offered on the U.S. market.

The 5-Series GT is one of the most unsuccessful models BMW has ever offered. However, the company is bound and determined to get the GT formula right and will more than likely be doing so with the new generation 3-Series. Rumors for a 3-Series GT began a few years ago and many were enticed with the idea of a roomier 3-Series, and renderings began almost immediately. Now, the first spy images for the larger Avant-style vehicle have been captured, as the new 3-Series GT has been caught during its winter testing somewhere in Europe.

The difference between the unsuccessful 5-Series GT and the new 3-Series GT is that the latter will drop the twin-door hatch design in favor of a normal one piece hatch. It will also be 15 inches longer than the standard model and offer the added bonus of more headroom due to the shooting brake layout. The four-door coupe designed body will combine a set of raised, sliding rear seats with a high lifting tailgate that should make accessing the larger cargo area very trouble-free. This formula may very well make the car a bit more successful than the 5-Series GT.

Under the hood, the upcoming 3-Series GT will be offered with the same engine line-up as its sedan brother. Customers will have a choice between four engines - two petrol and two diesel - with power ranging from 163 HP to 306 HP. It is rumored that BMW will also offered a range of smaller engines.

The official debut will be made next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

UPDATE 02/06/2013: Following the first image that surfaced the internet yesterday, a new set of official images for the upcoming 3-Series GT has been dropped online. Its world debut will be made next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but first details will likely appear online earlier than expected.

BMW 3-Series GT Images may Have Leaked

The GT version of the new BMW 3-Series has been caught testing many times, but each time the car was heavily camouflaged. Today, however, an image has surfaced on the internet and it appears to reveal the real 3-Series GT.

The 3-Series GT version will be about 15 inches longer than the standard model, meaning it will offer increased interior and cargo room. Unlike the 5-Series GT, the new 3-Series GT will drop the twin-door-hatch design in favor of a normal one-piece hatch.

Under the hood, the 3-Series GT will be offered with the same engine lineup as the sedan version, meaning customers will have to choose between four engines - two gasoline engines and two diesel engines- with power ranging from 163 horsepower to 306 horsepower.

If the image posted on a French forum turns out to be real, we should expect the official details in the upcoming days. Of course, this might also be just a Photoshop'd image...

Valencia Orange BMW E82 1M by European Auto Source

European Auto Source recently welcomed a Valencia Orange BMW 1-Series M coupe at the workshop. Their aim was to put it on the dyno after several upgrades.

The modificatoin list included Akrapovic stainless steel downpipes, a full Eisenmann performance race exhaust and an ESS E-Flash ECU performance software cable. An IND Painted Cosmetic Package was utilized while a KW Variant 3 coilover system was used for the suspension. It rolls on HRE P43S wheels.

After flashing an ESS tune to the car’s ECU, this 1M picked up an additional 21hp and 30Nm.

Yesterday BMW unveiled the official images of the new 4-Series Coupe Concept and today, based on those images we have created a very cool rendering for the upcoming M4 Coupe. We hope you like it!

The BMW M4 will be distinguished by BMW's usual M-design elements like the more aggressive front bumper, LED headlights, a wide track and different side air intakes. At the rear you will notice the usual M sports exhaust system and the car will, of course, come with larger wheels.

Under the hood the M4 will drop the V-8 engine used in the M3 Coupe in favor of a new twin-turbocharged inline-six engine with an output of about 450 ponies. This new engine will make the upcoming M4 more powerful and more fuel efficient than the model it replaces.

The new BMW M4 Coupe will be launched a few months after the 4-Series Coupe arrives on the market in 2013. We'll keep you updated with all of the details once the leaking valve at Bimmer starts flowing M4 details.

BMW Claiming PSA Owes it €50 Million

So BMW and Peugeot Citro n (PSA) were once a happy couple, just humming along in a deal that would help bring more hybrid and EV technology to both brands. All was well and good, and the relationship was blossoming into a mutually beneficial deal with no signs of issues. That was until General Motors decided to start flirting with the French automaker.

PSA decided that the grass was indeed greener on the other side and formed a deal with GM to increase its stake in producing vehicles with the American automaker. This apparently is a fatal blow to the deal between BMW and PSA, but BMW isn't letting PSA get away Scott-free. Part of the BMW-PSA deal was that the two automakers would jointly build a factory to manufacture the hybrid and EV technology and BMW is holding PSA to its promises by demanding 50 million, according to media outlets in France.

With the automotive world in Europe seeing the same types of struggles that the U.S. auto industry went through just a few years ago, 50 million is a lot of money for PSA to pony up. PSA hasn't yet issued a response to Bimmer's claim, but chances are this is ultimately the fatal blow to the once-promising BMW-PSA deal.

We're curious if the upcoming i8 hybrid was secretly a part of the hybrid technology that the two were planning to share. If so, this could be a key reason that BMW has been eerily quiet about the much-anticipated i8. We'll keep an eye on this situation and let you know what comes of it.
