BMW Will Put The OLED Taillights Into Production Starting With The M2

Light Emitting Diodes, or LEDs, have become utterly prevalent in the automotive industry these days, but BMW is reaching to the next step with OLED technology. Previewed in its M4 Light Concept earlier in 2015, BMW says it's ready to use OLEDs in its next M-division vehicle.

The new acronym stands for Organic Light Emitting Diodes and will likely replace the current crop of LED technology. It's already starting in the television sector, with LG producing the worlds' first OLED TV, which also happens to be one of the thinnest TVs on the market.

The system works by placing thin films of organic material - in this case carbon-based materials - between two conductors. The super small structure means BMW designers can incorporate intricately detailed designs into lighting elements. It's that super small structure that lends OLED its attractiveness. What's more, the OLED bulbs are eco-friendly, containing only trace amounts of Iridium, a non-toxic heavy metal.

As for the next M vehicle, BMW is set to launch its 2016 M2 within the coming months. It's a sure bet its rear end will be graced with OLED taillamps. As for the rest of the car, expect a smaller, meaner version of the M4 Coupe with plenty of power on hand and a fierce appetite for corners.

Valet Parking Crashes Ferrari 599 GTO

A Ferrari 599 GTO owner was likely nonplussed when he learned that a valet parking attendant smashed his $500,000 supercar into a storefront in Rome. The valet claims he got confused and stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, unleashing all 670 of 6.0-liter V12's horsepower. He also told police he was befuddled by the car's paddle-shift-operated transmission, but you don't need to be Sebastian Vettel to know how this stuff works. Even Volkswagen Golfs have paddles behind the wheel these days.

The owner was waiting at the Hotel Exedra with his wife and had driven from the Netherlands to attend a Ferrari Owner's Club meeting in the town Anzio, just south of Rome. Only 599 examples of the 599 GT0 were ever built. Now there appears to be one fewer, because this looks like a write-off.

SCG003 Smashes Nurburgring Lap Record

It was just a few days ago when Glickenhaus' new SCG 003 supercar hit the Nurburgring track for its first ever race of the year. Unfortunately for the Hollywood entrepreneur, both his cars got black-flagged for being too loud. As ludicrous as that may sound, the SCG 003 wouldn't have finished the race anyway, as the VLN event was stopped a few laps later when a Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 crashed into a group of spectators, killing one. A case of bad luck? Of course, but the American team just returned to share some amazing news. As it turns out, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus didn't leave the 'Ring after the race, but scheduled a few runs in an attempt to set a new track record. And so it did, as the supercar needed only 6:42 to lap the Nordschleife.

The big announcement came via the company's Instagram account, and although there's no video to back the claim yet, the SCG 033's time is mind-boggling. The American supercar not only smashed the Zonda R's 6:47-minute benchmark, but also demolished the Radical SR8 LM's 6:48-minute lap, the official record for production, street-legal vehicles as of 2015.

Making things that much more amazing is that the SCG 003 is now the fourth-fastest vehicle, be it road-legal, track-only or race car, to ever lap the Nordschleife. The all-time (racing) lap record sits at 6:11.13, as established by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 during qualifying for the 1983 1,000km of Nurburgring.

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe - Driven

Jaguar has always epitomized the proper gentleman's car for me - especially its sports cars. The imagery of an Englishman with his driving cap donned, twisting down some wet country road after tea time flashes through my mind when I consider where a Jaguar should feel most at home. Sadly, Jaguar lost its way for a few years, producing less-than-stellar vehicles with even less-stellar reliability records.

However that tide is certainly turning, thanks to Jaguar's new parent company Tata Motors. Jaguar, along with is sister company Land Rover, has seen vast improvements. Leading that charge for Jag is this: the F-Type.

Introduced in 2013 as a convertible and 2014 as a coupe, the F-Type has swung perceptions of the brand and enlivened and grown (or should I say replenished) its fan base. Jaguar does make other fantastic cars, but none of them boast the outright appeal and allure as the F-Type.

And within the F-Type category, none appeal more than the 550-horsepower F-Type R. With the keys in hand for a week, I set out to discover exactly what the F-Type - and its revived brand - have to say for themselves.

Aston Martin Sues Fisker Over Thunderbolt Copyright Infringement

In a peculiar turn of events, Aston Martin has filed suit against Henrik Fisker, alleging that Fisker copied a number of a design elements on the Vanquish-based Thunderbolt sports car. The suit also states that Fisker is misleading potential Thunderbolt buyers when he says that the model is based on the latest Aston Martin Vanquish, when in fact the car has the underpinnings of an older DB9 or DBS. Truthfully, the single photo of the interior of Fisker's Thunderbolt does show a more old-school center console.

The news is even more surprising considering that Fisker used to be head of design at Aston Martin and was responsible for the V8 Vantage and the DB9's looks. On top of that, Aston Martin says that the designer contacted his former employer in the early stages of development for the Thunderbolt, and Aston Martin believed that the final design would look different. After the Thunderbolt was shown at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, Aston Martin promptly filed a suit in a California court. "Fisker's bad-faith intent to free-ride off the tremendous goodwill associated with the famous Aston Martin mark, wings logo, side vent mark, and Vanquish mark could not be more transparent," the carmaker said in the legal filing.

The complaint mentions harsh words like "trademark infringement, false designation of origin, dilution, false advertising, intentional interference with contractual relationship and interference with prospective economic advantage." In other words, the relationship between Henrik Fisker and Aston Martin couldn't have turned more sour.

Future Chevrolet Corvette, CUV Teased In TV Show Clip?

In a recent episode of Americarna on the Velocity channel, Ray Evernham has a quick chat with Ed Welburn, global vice president of design for General Motors, to see some of what it takes to bring vehicle design concepts to the real world. The clip is remarkable in that it shows the inner workings of how GM develops its future cars and concept vehicles, but if you look close, there might also be a few sneak peeks to enjoy.

First, Welburn shows a full-scale clay model of what looks to be a small crossover, and the interesting part of this is that you can just barely make out the existence of a Chevrolet bowtie on the wheels. It would appear that this model is inspired by a sketch - some of which can be seen on the wall at around the 1:17 mark. Could this be the next-gen Chevy Equinox?

The true highlight of the video comes when Welburn gets to designer Christine Park, who says she's working on the design of a "Chevy sports car." There are a few different vehicle designs visible on her computer monitor, but the one that sticks out the most is the yellow vehicle wearing the signature crossed flag emblem of the Corvette on its nose. The short nose and vented hood could very well be the oft-rumored, mid-engined Corvette named "Zora." Of course, the Corvette's chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, recently denied rumored of this car's existence.

McLaren 675LT

In a move that would fill the space left between the 650S supercar and the astronomically potent P1 hypercar, McLaren looks to be building a "track-focused development of the 650S" called the 675LT. With a nod to the F1 GTR "Long Tail," which competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races of the late-90s, the limited-production 675LT would pack an even bigger punch than its 650S sibling, wringing every last ounce of performance possible from the platform.

Featuring enhanced aerodynamics, less weight, and even more power, the 675LT will essentially be offered as a barely-road-legal race car. It may bear all the appropriate markings of something you'd find out on a public highway, like headlights, a windshield, turn signals, and tires with grooves, but given the appropriate environment, the 675LT would handily trounce just about any competitor in a contest of speed. However, this extra performance also come at a hugely inflated price over the $265,500 650S.

Turbocharged Mustang 8-Second Quarter-Mile: Video

The fifth-generation Ford Mustang might have been replaced by a redesigned, more modern iteration for the 2015 model year, but it's still a number one choice for drag racers nationwide due to its traditional - some might say ancient - live rear axle. Fifth-gen 'Stangs can be seen burning rubber at just about any drag racing event across the U.S., but very few of them are as mind-blowing as the one you're about to see in this video. And there's more than one reason for that.

First, the Boss 302 coupe hides a massive, 82mm turbo under its hood, which enables the modified Coyote engine to send a whopping 1,000 horsepower to the rear wheels through a race-spec Rossler transmission. Second, the vehicle is well-camouflaged as a street car, with only the rear drag radials giving away its potential. Then there's the amazing fact that it can run 8-second quarter-miles. If that doesn't impress you, the fact that it's nearly a second quicker than a 1,200-horsepower Nissan GT-R should. SCG 003

If the name SCG doesn't ring a bell for you its only because up until now you were more familiar with the "James Glickenhaus." Yes, the developer of the famous Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and the race version, the P4/5 Competizione. SCG - or Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus - is his personal brand that will hit the market with two new models: a road car called 003 and the race version, 003C. Why 003? Simply because it will be the third model developed by Glickenhaus.

In a recent post Glickenhaus, said that the company already started to work on the engineering, aero and design, but unfortunately you shouldn't expect to see the new model until later in 2015.

Updated 02/27/2015: James Glickenhaus revealed the official details of the SCG 003 supercar with just a few days before the official debut in Geneva.

Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Makes Some Noise: Video

While everyone is busy trying to guess what sort of track monster Aston Martin will unveil at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show under the Vulcan name, the Brits quietly introduced the Vantage GT3 Special Edition. Essentially a street-legal version of the carmaker's GT3-spec race car, this new V-12-powered rig is aimed at the bonkers 911 GT3, with Aston Martin hoping to defeat the benchmark of all track-ready sports cars by means of 600 PS (592 horsepower). Naturally, you don't stand a chance against the 911 GT3 unless you go to fat-camp first, but the folks over at Aston Martin took care of that by shaving no fewer than 220 pounds off the car's weight compared to the standard Vantage.

Of course, the GT3's interior features fewer bells and whistles than usual, but if you fancy race-ready bits, this Vantage has you covered. The big news obviously lies under the long hood, where the naturally aspirated, 5.9-liter V-12 engine roars to the tune of 600 PS, which represents a 27 PS gain over the standard Vantage. More importantly, the updated, race-spec mill sounds downright stunning, obliterating the 911 GT3's as far as decibels go. Cadillac ATS-V Sedan

Welcome to Cadillac's new direction; sport luxury wrapped in an attractive package and motivated by a powerful engine. The 2016 ATS-V sedan is the latest and greatest General Motors has to offer with the ATS platform. The four-door luxury compact sedan first bowed in the 2012 model year and took the segment by storm. A minor refresh for 2015 brings the car in line with its new-for-2015 Coupe version while Cadillac's new wreathless and widened crest replaces the old brand emblem. With its sights set squarely on dethroning the Germans and their performance luxury sedans, Cadillac is upping the ante with twin turbochargers, sport suspension, and enough go-fast bits to build a racecar - all while keeping that swanky style the brand has become identifiable with.

At the heart of the ATS-V lies a twin-turbocharged version of the familiar 3.6-liter V-6. The engine finds itself with numerous upgrades, helping it produce an estimated 455 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual comes standard while the new eight-speed automatic borrowed from the Corvette Z06 is optional. All the power is routed through a limited-slip differential to the rear tires. Cadillac expects 0 to 60 mph to come in a blazing 3.9 seconds.

Cadillac's outspoken new front man and president, Johan de Nysschen, says this V-Series is the "best example of Cadillac's emerging product substance and the purest expression of the passion at the core of the brand." Translation: the new 2016 ATS-V sedan ain't your grandma's Cadillac.

Who Has It Bigger? Nissan Says The GT-R Nismo!

Well this is a bit strange and embarrassing. Not too long ago at the Academy Awards, Ellen DeGeneres managed to crash Twitter when she posted a celebrity selfie. Some people even went as far as to say that the internet itself was broken. Recently Paper Magazine decided it wanted to cause an incredible viral sensation by posting pictures of Kim Kardashian and her enormous booty in various states of undress accompanied with the hashtag #BreakTheInternet.

Nissan has been on point with making fun of people and situations on Twitter lately - just look at the Nyan-cat GT-R joke - and they decided that Kim Kardashian would make the perfect target. The main photo in question shows Kardashian balancing a champagne glass on her large posterior. Nissan's simple response is a rear three-quarter view of the new GT-R Nismo with a champagne glass perched upon its rear wing. The photo is complimented by little more than the text "Ours is bigger."

It is a equal parts silly, abnormal, and desperate. I love that Nissan has a social team that is not afraid to take chances on obscure social campaigns, but sadly this one feels more like a sad grab for attention by piggy-backing on what was promising to be a lucrative social movement. That said, I won't complain about more high-resolution photos of the GT-R Nismo floating around the internet.

Porsche Claims There is No 911 or Macan Hybrid in the Works

There's been a lot of talk about Porsche's rumored plans to develop a hybrid version of the 911. The rumor surfaced in early 2014 and brought the prospect of a sports car that could deliver around 700 ponies while being able to run on electric power for a limited amount of time. Better fuel efficiency was also on the table for a scenario that sounded exciting to say the least. However, it seems Porsche is in no hurry to build a 911 hybrid, at least not during the current generation's lifetime.

According to Top Gear, which spoke to an unnamed Porsche spokesman, the Germans aren't planning to bring plug-in technology to the 991-gen 911. With the current model having been introduced less than three years ago, a hybrid iteration is out of the question for at least three to four more years. What's more, the company official added it's unlikely for the generation that replaces the 991 to get it as well, which means another six to seven years without a plug-in 911. That's not to say Porsche is ruling out a 911 hybrid, but it could be a possibility "within the next 15 years." If you're still excited about that 911 hybrid, then you're a very patient gearhead.

The 911 isn't the only Porsche that's not getting a hybrid drivetrain anytime soon. It seems a hybrid version of the Macan is out of the question as well, mainly because the hybrid powertrain motivating the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is too big for the crossover. The company is considering a more compact hybrid system, Porsche hybrid powertrain manager Manfred Shurmann told Top Gear, but "no development is taking place at the moment."

All told, Porsche's hybrid lineup is set to continue with its three-car range, which includes the 918, Cayenne and Panamera, for the foreseeable future.

Subaru BRZ STI

Ever since Subaru dropped the new BRZ onto the market, we knew that an even hotter STI version was sure to follow. Now, British magazine AutoExpress is offering a few details on this new model, set to arrive sometime next year.

The future BRZ STI will feature a more powerful version of the current 2.0-liter flat-four cylinder 'boxer' engine. The output will be raised up to somewhere in the 250-horsepower area (an addition of about 50 horsepower), thanks to the modifications made to the engine's variable valve control system. That will also allow for an even higher rev limit of around 7,500rpm with the help of a new freer-flowing exhaust.

Next to the extra power, the new STI will also be even lighter than the standard BRZ. It will also be distinguished by a dramatic bodykit, a stiffened and lowered suspension, lighter but larger 18-inch alloy wheels, and upgraded brakes.

One downside to the BRZ STI is that there will be no turbocharged version offered. Subaru says there is no space for it in the engine bay and they are reserving these version for models like the WRX STI.

When the BRZ STI does debut, Subaru would have taken the next step in their playful game of one-ups-man-ship. What say you, Toyota?

UPDATE 10/23/2012: Just a few days ago, Subaru unveiled a Subaru BRZ equipped with STI upgrades at the 2012 Australian Motor Show in Sydney. We knew this wasn't this wasn't the real Subaru BRZ STI deal, but it confirmed the fact that great things were going to be coming from Subaru in the near future.

Now we hear that Subaru is preparing a turbocharged direct-injection version of the horizontally opposed, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine used in the standard BRZ. This engine will feature a single twin-scroll turbocharger and straight direct-injection developed in-house and not the DI/port-injection system developed in cooperation with Toyota.

This engine could deliver up to 280 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, transforming the upcoming BRZ STI into a real competitor in the sports car market. (AutoNews)

Video: Ferrari LaFerrari XX Makes Some Noise On The Track

Ferrari's new LaFerrari. is already the most powerful road Ferrari ever built, thanks to a hybrid engine that combines to produce an incredible 963 horsepower. With so much power, many people have wondered how Ferrari could ever top it.

But over the past few months, spy photos and spy videos of a "LaFerrari XX" have been captured, showing a track-focused supercar undergoing some serious test runs. One video even captured the LaFerrari XX in a test run that went a little too hard, breaking its suspensiosn and nearly losing a wheel.

Recently, a new video of the LaFerrari XX was spotted, and while it lacked the drama of suspension damage, this one perfectly captures the piercing sound of that engine.

The acoustics are downright incredible and borderline insane. Even when the LaFerrari XX was at a distance far removed from the camera, you could still hear it's engine unleash the fury of Ferrari engineering at its finest.

Here's a tip: watch this video with the volume turned up. You'll appreciate it a whole lot more.

Video: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Testing At Nurburgring

If you haven't been living under a rock lately, you already know Chevrolet is working on the sixth-generation Camaro, due to arrive in 2015. Testing is already underway, with a camouflaged prototype being spotted near and on the Nurburgring track in September 2014. We received a bevy of spy shots as soon as the pony car hit the German pavement and although that was enough to make out some of details and speculate upon its new styling, we have yet to see the new Camaro in action. Thankfully, the wait ends right now, as the first video footage featuring the muscle car on the Nurburgring has hit the Interwebz.

Of course, the video doesn't add to what we already know so far about the new Camaro, but it does reveal the exhaust note of the V-8 fitted under the hood. There's no trace of supercharger whine in the soundtrack, so it's safe to assume we're looking at the naturally aspirated Camaro SS. Chevy has yet to spill the details on the greasy bits, but we expect it to drop a detuned version of the Corvette Stingray's 6.2-liter, LT1 V-8 under the Camaro's hood. It is also likely the manufacturer will offer a dual-mode exhaust system on the SS. Output figures should sit in the 430-horsepower range, right above the 2015 Mustang GT.

Naturally, the 2016 Camaro range will be completed by a V-6 unit, likely to return with the same 3.6-liter displacement, but word has it Chevy is also pondering a turbocharged four-cylinder as an answer to the Mustang's 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit. We should find out more about that soon enough. Meanwhile, click play to watch the 2016 Camaro SS lap the "Green Hell."

Ford Mustang by Vortech Superchargers

Now that the 2015 Ford Mustang is ready to hit the streets, America's aftermarket specialists are introducing one upgrade after another. We've already seen what Saleen and Hennessey can do to the muscle car and now it's time to take a look at what Vortech is offering for the brand-new, sixth-generation pony. Naturally, everything coming from Vortech's shop is supercharged, so we are looking at a handful of updates that will take the 2015 Mustang to ludicrous heights. Spy Shots: Lamborghini Cabrera Out Testing

Lamborghini Gallardo's successor is rumored to arrive in a concept version at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but it looks like the company is already testing the production version of the supercar. The car was recently caught testing in hot conditions and it's getting pretty clear that it will get an Aventador-inspired look. From the spy shots, we gather that the prototype will have dimensions similar to the Gallardo.

The successor to the Gallardo is rumored to carry the Cabrera name, which is, of course, the name of a famed Spanish bull. The new Cabrera will bring a series of new features and will be built on the same lightweight, carbon-fiber monocoque as the Aventador, which will make it about 60 pounds lighter than the current Gallardo.

Expect the production version of the Lamborghini Cabrera to be unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The coupe version will be followed by a a number of variants in the years thereafter, including Spyder and the Superleggera models.

Video: Tribute To Audi UrQuattro

We've all come to appreciate Audi's iconic quattro technology, one of the world's most potent all-wheel-drive systems. Its what makes modern Audis such great vehicles, from the full-size A8 sedan to the Q7 SUV and the R8 supercar.

Now in its seventh generation, the quattro system has been enabling Audi engines to send their power to all four corners for 34 years. That's not to say it took the Germans more than three decades to achieve perfection. No, the quattro was equally revolutionary when it was introduced in 1980, but sometimes it's a good idea to look back on those brilliant ideas that changed the automotive world forever. And that's what Petrolicious did with its latest video, which pays tribute to the UrQuattro, the first four-ringed vehicle to receive all-wheel-drive.

The UrQuattro, also known as simply Quattro, debuted in 1980 as a midsize, two-door coupe. While not exactly spectacular by design, the Quattro was the first vehicle to benefit from Audi's then brand-new all-wheel-drive system. The feat proved to be decisive into turning the boxy UrQuattro into a legend on both the road and rally courses.

Although the production car remained largely unchanged until it was discontinued in 1991, the Quattro spawned a series of fierce rally cars. It all began with the A1 in 1980, which then developed into the Group B-spec S1 evolution. The latter was one of the most extreme rally cars ever built and went on to win several WRC events and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb three years in a row. In all, the quattro system helped Audi score 23 rally wins and two WRC titles, among other trophies.

Sure, Audi is no longer building rally cars, but that's not to say the quattro has abandoned its motorsport roots. The connection is still obvious in the company's results at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race the Germans have won 13 times the last 15 years.
