Aston Martin asks fans to design a livery for the Vantage GT3

Aston Martin Vantage GT3 livery contest 15.2.2013

Winning design will be announced on February 28th

TRG-Aston Martin Racing North America has announced a new contest that is asking fans to create a livery for one of the Vantage GT3s that will compete in the Rolex Grand-Am Series.

Fans are being asked to design a livery using one of four pictures of the Vantage GT3. The designs can then be submitted through the company's Facebook page.

The winning livery will be selected by a panel of three judges that include Kevin Buckler (CEO of TRG-AMR North America), John Gaw (Managing Director of Aston Martin Racing) and Aston Martin Factory Driver Darren Turner. They will start reviewing the entries on February 20th, before announcing the winner on the 28th.

According to Buckler, "This contest is going to be a once in a lifetime chance for fans, artists, and car lovers. People have been designing and customizing their own cars for years, and we want to give them a chance to take one of the most iconic brands, with one of the most successful sports car race teams, and give it a personalized touch."

Toyota GT 86 Convertible spied in South Africa

Toyota GT 86 Convertible spied in South Africa

Toyota GT 86 Convertible spy photo 15.2.2013 / carmag.co.za

Looks virtually production ready

Toyota recently announced plans to introduce a GT 86 Convertible concept at the Geneva Motor Show, but an eagle-eyed reader of South Africa's Car Magazine has managed to snap a photo of what appears to be a production model.

Caught in Cape Town, the car looks downright attractive as the conversion from coupe to convertible hasn't marred its charm. The photos were taken from a distance, so we can't see a lot of details, but the model appears to have large trunk and revised bodywork.

Like the coupe, the convertible will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that develops 200 HP (147 kW) and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque.

There's no word on when the convertible will be launched, but we should learn more about it at the Geneva Motor Show.

BMW Alpina B3

Posted on 02.15.2013 09:00 by
Simona

We are still more than three weeks away from the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but it looks like each day we learn more about the models that will be displayed at the show. One of these models is the new Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo, based on the F30 335i sedan.

According to the first details we have on the new B3, it looks like it will deliver more power and torque than the model it replaces, plus it will be about 20 percent more fuel efficient.

The 3.0-liter turbocharged engine will be tuned to deliver a massive 410 horsepower at 5,500 rpm - quite an update over the standard 300 horsepower offered by the 335i. The engine will be paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and will sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds.

Full details on the new Alpina B3 will be unveiled during its official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The bad news is that, just like with predecessor, the new B3 will not be offered on the U.S. market.

The 2014 Chevy SS will make its world debut tomorrow at the at Daytona International Speedway's fan zone. Until then, Chevrolet has decided to drop one final teaser of the new performance sedan. As you probably expected, the new teaser image reveals pretty much nothing, so its purpose was just to remind us to follow Chevrolet tomorrow at 13:05 p.m. EST.

Most of you already know what the new SS will look like, especially if you have kept track of the news in the past few weeks. First there was the revealing of the Nascar version of the SS and just the other day, Holden uncovered the new VF Commodore. This doesn’t mean that you cannot be excited for tomorrow's reveal, as the new SS will likely adopt a more aggressive and sportier look.

As for what's under the hood, you should expect a V8 engine with an output of at least 430 horsepower.

Stay tuned for more details!

Nissan has taken the wraps off its new global compact car, the 2013 Nissan Note. According to Nissan, “With a goal of becoming the most user-friendly car in its segment, the new Note will explore the full potential of compact cars when it goes on sale in Japan this fall.”

Official specs have not been released, but Nissan claims that the Note achieves class-leading fuel efficiency and emission levels, combining advanced engine technology, a lightweight platform and improved aerodynamics.

The Note also gets Nissan’s advanced Around View Monitor (AVM) which is included for the first time in a compact car, and will be available with two different engines in Japan. One of the engines is the newly-developed three-cylinder supercharged, direct injection DIG-S engine

2013 Ford Expedition

2013 Ford Expedition SUV

As other utility vehicles-including Ford’s own once-ubiquitous Explorer-have evolved to be less truck-like and more family-friendly, Ford has stuck to its guns with the hefty Expedition In some respects, it represents a fad that’s faded; but in other respects it delivers the same solid truck ability that it always has-making it a good choice for those who need to tow or haul heavy loads.

However even relative to other trucks, the 2013 Expedition doesn’t at all look fresh. Some years ago the Expedition was kept fresh with significant updates almost yearly-most of them in synch with the F-150 pickups on which they’re based. Instead, Ford has left the Expedition to carry over unchanged for many years now as the F-150 has seen more incremental tweaks and improvements. The result is that while the latest F-Series trucks have a crisper, edgier look, the Expedition has stayed more rounded in its details on the outside, while inside it now feels like the relic of another era at Ford.

If you’re okay with the Expedition’s not-intentionally-retro look, you’ll want to measure your parking spot and carefully choose between the standard-length Expedition and the extended-length Expedition EL. The EL is 14.8 inches longer, with the major difference being longer rear fenders and glass from the outside. Cargo space is more abundant and third-row access is considerably easier in the EL, but you’ll pay a price in maneuverability. It’s one of the biggest SUVs on the planet, with a wheelbase of 131 inches-in other words, longer than a Smart fortwo or Mitsubishi i.

A version of Ford’s new 5.0-liter V-8, from the F-150 pickup, had been expected to trickle down (or up?) to the Expedition for 2013; but it hasn’t arrived after all. That leaves instead the same 310-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 that the Expedition has had for years. It makes 365 pound-feet of torque and allows the Expedition to move quickly most of the time; but hitch up a trailer or load the Expedition near its limit (up to 9,200 pounds for towing) and this engine doesn’t have the stout, unrelenting character of GM’s current batch of V-8s-especially the larger V-8 in the Suburban. Four-wheel drive remains available pretty much throughout the entire lineup, and the six-speed automatic transmission is responsive and smooth-shifting.

Considering the Expedition’s mammoth size, driving it is quite easy thanks to light but precise steering, as well as a suspension that does a good job in controlling all that weight. Yes, it’s one of the biggest land yachts on the market, but it’s manageable. The only issue we’ve noted in prior years is that the pedal feel of the brakes can be somewhat spongy. Ride quality isn’t up to the standards of modern crossovers, for the most part, but the Expedition does keep its composure on rougher surfaces, and it rides better than other body-on-frame trucks. If you can afford it, the King Ranch edition offers a unique spin on a luxury-SUV interior, with unpolished leather like that of a baseball glove.

While some older, more trucklike SUV designs had spacial disconnects, with interiors that were smaller than you might have guessed, the interior of the Expedition is cavernous, almost like that of a full-size van. The Expedition’s front seats are captain’s chairs, mounted high and affording a good view out, and a telescopic steering wheel and power-adjustable pedals allow for a vast range of body types. The expansive head and knee room continues in the second row of seats, and even adult passengers will find the third row spacious enough for short trips. In EL models, there’s 130.8 cubic feet of cargo space, including an additional 24 cubic feet behind the third-row seat. A PowerFold third-row seat and power liftgate arrangement are handy when hands are full, and the EL’s longer rear doors make getting into (and out of) the third row quite easy.

The feature set in the 2013 Ford Expedition is a little behind the times as well; it lacks Ford’s innovative (and sometimes frustrating) MyFord Touch connectivity interface, instead offering the more dated Sync system, combined with a voice-activated navigation system and HD Radio in top trims. The lineup includes XL, XLT, Limited, and King Ranch trims, with a total of ten equipment groups. Standard equipment across the entire range includes keyless entry keypad, heated power mirrors, air conditioning, an electrochromic rearview mirror, illuminated visors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while Ford’s MyKey system and SecuriCode keypad-entry system are standout features. This year Ford has added a new dual-head-restraint DVD system, and a new 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheel design.

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged

I’ll never turn down the chance to drive a Range Rover, any Range Rover-new, old, beat-up, pristine, it doesn’t matter. I like them all.

This 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE was no exception. It is built like a brick and has a terrific ride-handling mix for a 5,500-pounder, and by that I mean few vehicles soak up the Detroit potholes as well. I’m always astonished at how well-planted these big Rovers feel when I drive them. It is also exceptionally well built inside with beautiful materials.

You sit high in the cockpit with a commanding view of the road. The normally aspirated V8 provides plenty of power, and the shifts from the six-speed auto are imperceptible.

I’ve been known to rail "the rent is too damn high"-style against the ridiculous sticker prices cropping up on so many new cars. And make no mistake, at $68,000 and change, the Range Rover Sport isn’t for the faint of heart or wallet.

The thing is, the Range Rover actually feels like a $70,000 vehicle. After spending the evening on a combination of traffic-clogged highways, slow side streets and wide-open interstates, I returned to the office, saw the MSRP and thought to myself, "Yeah, that sounds about right."

To be clear, I’m not in the Range Rover tax bracket. The point is with its lusty V8, opulent cabin and general overall feel of quality and luxury, the big Land Rover actually begins to deliver on a value proposition. You could spend a heck of a lot more and get less from certain to-remain-nameless German automakers.

Granted, you’re going to funnel a fat chunk of change directly into the Range Rover’s fuel tank thanks to a laughable 15 mpg combined. And the "utility" part of the acronym is equally questionable considering the compromised rear-seat legroom and cargo area. Consider the Range Rover Sport a tall personal-luxury vehicle, though, and skip the Sierra Club meetings and enjoy an actual luxury value for once.

I’m going to start by saying something that I’ve never said about any vehicle ever: It doesn’t need any more power. The 375 hp from the naturally aspirated V8 moves this big truck around just fine. If this only gets 15 mpg, the supercharged version must get 11 mpg.

With all that said, I love the upholstery in this vehicle-nicely stitched leather-and the obligatory Land Rover arm rests, which are a nice touch even if a tad antiquated by today’s vehicle interior standards. But they work, and I’m glad Land Rover continues that tradition.

Good vehicle, but it’s time for an update.

Gray Design intros Xhibitionist yacht and Xhibit G car design combo [video]

Car gets V12 630 HP engine

Gray Design has announced the new Xhibitionist yacht and Xhibit G car designs.

After showing the SC166 super-yacht and Zeus Twelve Gold Rush, Gray Design is back with two additional interesting projects. The Xhibitionist yacht is described as a "masterful blend of style, purpose and efficiency" featuring a hull that has an inverted trimaran configuration to add stability. It boasts solar panels which provide power to the vessel but at the same time act as a helipad or even a concert stage.

The Xhibit G car is the "matching counterpart" of the yacht and features similar styling with carbon fiber body panels for low curb weight. The car is envisioned with a V12 engine producing 630 hp (470 kW) and an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Inside it gets a 900-watt, 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio system, white leather, carbon fiber accents for the seats and dashboard.

Read more about both projects at the source links below.

TagAZ Aquila enters production

 TagAZ Aquila enters production

TagAZ Aquila

Priced from 10,625 EUR

The TagAZ Aquila has entered production phase and will arrive in showrooms very soon.

The Russian four-door coupe is already available for order and has received so far more than a thousand reserves. At first it will be offered exclusively with a 1.6-liter 16v engine producing 107 HP (79 kW) connected to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Later on it will also be available with 150 HP (110 kW) and maybe an automatic transmission.

It has a starting price of 415,000 rubles (about 10,625 EUR / 14,000 USD / 8,900 GBP) and comes as standard with ABS, power steering, air conditioning, front airbags, sound system and electric parking brake. The car won't be sold beyond Russia and nearby countries because if they would want to sell it in Western Europe they would have to make in-depth modifications and add more safety equipment which would make it pricier and less desirable than the competition.

Audi S3 Sportback

In an attempt to keep us busy until the convertible version will finally join the S3 lineup, Audi has unveiled the initial details on the Sportback version - a model set to make its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. What’s the difference between this and the standard S3? Well, the number of doors of course: the new Sportback has four doors and offers increased space for families while maintaining its sporty nature.

Except for the extra doors, the new Sportback version will pretty much remain identical to its three-door brother, meaning that customers will continue to enjoy the same performance numbers. You’ll have to consider that as the new Sportback is a little bit heavier, the 0 to 60 mph sprint will take 0.1 seconds longer.

Talking about weight, Audi managed to shave an impressive 154 pounds from the car total weight - when compared to previous generation. This result has been achieved by using weight-saving materials like an ultra-high-strength steel passenger cell and light aluminum wings and bonnet.

Ducati GTV 500

Posted on 02.11.2013 15:40 by Sulthoni
, Serafim

The Ducati GTV 500 is a pretty important part of Ducati's history. The parallel twin 350/500GTL models were introduced in 1975, taking their styling cues from the 860GT. Fabio Taglioni had nothing to do with them, as he was developing the belt-drive V-twin Pantah, so Tumidei updated the 1965 design. They were fitted with Borrani rims, Marzocchi forks and Brembo brakes and were succeeded by the 500 Sport Desmo in 1977. There was even a racing version, the 500 Super Sport. The final iteration was the GTV of 1977, a spring-valve version of the Sport Desmo which was made until 1981.

A similar model was put on sale featuring a handsome black and gold 900 SD paint job. Today there are very few of the original 500-cc parallel twins worldwide, so this bike is an excellent opportunity for any collector.

This classic motorcycle has an estimated price of 4.000- 6.000.

Hyundai ix35

The second-generation Hyundai ix35 (also known as Tucson for the American market) was unveiled in 2009 and this is the first time the company is working on a facelift for it. Our spy photographers have caught the SUV testing for the first time, before the car’s official unveiling at the 2013 Frankfurt Car Show in September.

Even though the SUV is heavily camouflaged, we expect it to feature design elements we have seen on both the Santa Fe and i40. This means we will see a three-bar hexagonal front grille, new headlamps, wraparound taillights and a new rear spoiler. Our spy photographers managed to also catch a shot of the interior, reveling that it will also receive small changes, most likely inspired by previously unveiled Hyundai models.

Under the hood, you should expect some all-new or modified engines to meet the demand for more fuel-efficient engines and less CO2.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel gets 30 mpg

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel

The biggest story of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is under the hood where you'll soon be able to order up a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine. Paired with Chrysler's new 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission the new Grand is capable of 21mpg city and 30mpg highway. Oh diesel, is there any vehicle you won't soon appear in?

The EcoDiesel will reportedly deliver 240hp and 420lb-ft of torque which should allow the Grand Cherokee to tow up to 7,400 pounds. The diesel option is likely to be more expensive than gasoline models but should still appeal to outdoorsy types who like to tow boats and other truckloads of recreational joy. Coupled with the significant savings at the pump it makes a strong case for itself.

We should also take a moment to acknowledge the nerdy historical signifigance at play here. As the Associated Press asserted the diesel Grand Cherokee marks "The first major expansion into diesel power in the U.S. by a mainstream SUV maker..."

2014 BMW 5-Series GT facelift spied again

BMW 5-Series GT facelift spy photo 08.02.2013 / Automedia

Major changes at the back

The BMW 5-Series GT is preparing to receive its first facelift which will be revealed later this year.

It seems BMW is sticking to the Gran Turismo models as the 3-Series GT was unveiled a few days ago in addition to this facelift for the bigger 5-Series GT. This second batch of spy photos hides a fairly more elegant rear end as the car will drop the big rear spoiler, even though pictures might suggest otherwise.

The front of the car will adopt a redesigned bumper with different air intakes, while the headlights and grilles look the same. Minor revisions to the interior cabin are also expected, while the engine lineup will most likely be carried over from the current version.

The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo facelift should make its debut later this year at a major auto show before going on sale in 2014.

Fisker Hoping to Begin Karma Production Soon

Posted on 02.8.2013 15:00 by
Justin Cupler

2.

Oh boy, Fisker has been run through the ringer in the past year, or so, but Henrik Fisker remains optimistic that everything's going to be all right. During the Chicago Auto Show, Mr. Fisker was heard saying that he anticipates the Karma's production to restart "fairly soon" after its recent halt.

To recap the recent struggles: Fisker first had tons of cars destroyed by Hurricane Sandy; their insurance company denied the claim for said damaged vehicles; A123 - their battery supplier - went belly up; and the aforementioned temporary cessation of the Karma's production. We're not even going to get into the fire issues that marred the company's image for a period of time.

With the approval of the sale of A123 to Wanxiang Group - a Chinese firm - one step in the restart process for the Karma is nearly complete. Fisker is still relying on an outside consultant to straighten out its business practices to save it a little cash and for an investor or strategic partner to bring in a little extra operating capital.

We are thoroughly convinced that the Karma is a quality luxury sedan, despite its earlier issues, so we are hoping that its production will restart without a hitch and that it will ultimately succeed. We'll continue following the Karma saga and update you as more details emerge.

The all-new WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Features available for the first time in a Jeep included Quadra-Drive II four wheel drive and a rear-seat DVD player.
The design still emphasizes power and luxury, with significant work done on improving noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). However, for the first time, Jeep also emphasized on-road performance to a similar extent as the cornerstone of its brand, off-road capability.
This newfound emphasis on on-road refinement led Jeep to replace the live-axle with leading-arms front suspension found in the ZJ and WJ, prized by off-roading Jeep fans for its ability to maintain consistent ground clearance and provide optimal wheel articulation, with a double-wishbone independent setup like that which debuted in the 2002 Liberty. Jeep changed its philosophy due to what it perceived as increasing demand in the SUV marketplace for on-road performance and decreasing demand for off-road capability.

2005 JEEP Hurricane Concept

Hurricane Concept

The Jeep Hurricane is a concept vehicle that was unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit by the manufacturer Daimler-Chrysler

Climbing Ability
The Hurricane has a ground clearance of 14.3 inches (360 mm). Combined with 20-inch wide wheels holding 37-inch tall tires that are specially designed for off-roading, the Hurricane can approach and climb a 64.0 degree angle. It can also descend and depart an 86.7 degree angle. Its 20-inch, four-wheel independent short/long-arm suspension system is dampened by coilover shocks with remote reservoirs, which allows for longer travels in the shock. This helps the Hurricane to ascend and regress down almost any natural surface.

Powertrains
The Hurricane is powered by two 5.7-liter Hemi engines, one above the front axle and one above the rear axle. Each engine produces 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 370 lbf ft (500 N m) of torque for a total power output of 670 horsepower (500 kW) and 740 lbf ft (1000 N m) of torque. These figures help to accelerate the Hurricane from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

One feature of the Hurricane's engine system is the ability to use different sets of cylinders for different driving conditions. Each engine contains eight cylinders, but the multi-displacement system can use all, half, or none of the cylinders of each engine. For example, all sixteen cylinders can be utilized for rough terrain, twelve can be used for charging along off-road trails, eight can be used for city driving, and four can be used for highway conditions. This feature can be manipulated manually or done automatically.

The Hurricane contains a mechanically controlled four-wheel torque-distribution system, where each wheel has its own driveshaft rather than having one central driveshaft. This system delivers power to the car's solid split axles through a central transfer case. In other powerful vehicles, the rotation of their central drive shafts applies downforce to one side of the car and upforce to the other. However, the Hurricane's split-axle design applies a downward force on each wheel individually, giving it great traction under acceleration. This prevents the frame from twisting and the wheels from lifting off the ground.

Steering
Another interesting feature of the Hurricane is the four-wheel independent steering system. Each of the Hurricane's four wheels can turn independently from one another, allowing for three steering modes. The first mode is standard steering, where the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels. This tightens the turning radius and allows for more accurate steering. In the second mode, called "crab-steering", all of the tires can be oriented in the same direction, which moves the vehicle laterally while it is still facing the same direction. The third mode makes use of the "T-Box Zero Steer" mechanism, turning all of the tires "toe-in" so that the wheels on each axle face a different direction. This means the Hurricane can actually turn in place, or spin with a turning radius of zero.

Performance
The Hurricane's one-piece body is composed largely of light-weight structural carbon fiber, which is both rigid and strong. Unlike traditional frames, the Hurricane's body also serves as the chassis, and all of the car's components such as the engine, transfer case, and suspension system are mounted directly to the body. Its skid plate is an aluminum spine that connects the chassis to the underside of the vehicle. The Hurricane doesn't have side doors or a roof, and there is only seating for two people. The driver and passenger have to enter the vehicle "Dukes-of-Hazzard" style. Despite the Hurricane's meager luxury options, it features a futuristic dashboard with polished aluminum accents named Black Thunder and Tiluminum. It also shows off Jeep's signature seven-slot grille.

2001 JEEP Grand Cherokee UK Version

Grand Cherokee UK Version

With plaudits and awards rolling in, and sales soaring, the new generation value-for-money Jeep Grand Cherokee has taken up the Jeep banner with flair, setting new standards of luxury 4x4 motoring.

Now that prices are even lower, Jeep Grand Cherokee represents phenomenal value. The top-of-the-range V8 has been reduced to 30,995 from 34,995, the rugged 3.1TD now costs 27,995, a reduction of 3,000, and the versatile 4.0 petrol is reduced by 2,000 to 27,995.

Certainly the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee has some big boots to fill. Its predecessor set new sales records every year following its launch into Europe in 1993.

To ensure Jeep Grand Cherokee stays ahead of the pack, the latest incarnation has been totally reworked, with a new 4.7-litre petrol V8 engine, new 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel, re-engineered 4.0-litre straight six petrol engine, and innovative world-class 4x4 technology.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, built specifically for the UK market at Graz in Austria, successfully marries the most cosseting luxury car comfort, ride and performance, to rugged go-anywhere ability in even the most hostile terrain, entirely in keeping with the robust Jeep legend.

The flagship of the Chrysler brand, Grand Cherokee is a classic American design, entirely in keeping with the Chrysler marque strengths of innovation, and individuality, a car that exudes passion and styling flair, laying down a new benchmark to which 4x4 pretenders can only aspire.

ALL NEW INSIDE AND OUT

New Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first Jeep vehicle developed and engineered using cutting-edge CATIA (Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application) computer design technology. For all the technological

innovation that lies under the skin though, there is no mistaking the new-shape Jeep Grand Cherokee's motif Jeep grille, less angular and more raked, unmistakably Jeep yet in keeping with the car's more fluid, refined and dynamic looks.

The instantly recognised grille is flanked by jewel-like headlamps that match stunning looks to increased efficiency. A brighter, wider beam pattern is matched to headlamp levelling, so that even when the car is heavily loaded or towing, the headlamps can be 'tuned' for optimum safety. The windscreen is steeply angled, for greater aerodynamic efficiency. To the rear, bold tri-colour tail lamps lend Jeep Grand Cherokee its distinctive on-road personality, to stand out from the crowd.

The interior has more room for occupants and luggage. By making Jeep Grand Cherokee 11 cm longer (4.4 inches), 6.4 cm higher (2.5 inches), and 4 cm wider (1.6 inches), occupants can now enjoy an extra 2.5 cm (one inch) more front headroom, 1.2 cm (half an inch) more rear head room, 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) more rear hip room and 36 litres (1.3 cubic feet) more luggage space.

There are new materials and a bold new look. The theme is elegant luxury. Soft-touch surfaces give a solid, reassuring feel. For the driver, control is total. All primary controls are to hand on stalks around the steering wheel, and key controls for the advanced audio system are integrated into the leather covered steering wheel.

There is more headroom front and rear, more hip room in the back, some 36 litres (1.2 cubic feet) more cargo volume, and with the full size spare tyre tucked away neatly under the rear cargo floor, easy-fold split rear seats and fold-down armrests open up a cavernous luggage compartment in a matter of moments.

The level of equipment is lavish right across the range. Standard specification includes the dual zone climate control system that independently controls air temperature for both sides of the cabin. There are heated front seats with 10-way power adjustment and memory settings, a 180 watt six speaker sound system and 'his' and 'hers' key fobs with full memory settings. There is also a rear screen radio aerial, flip-up hinged rear window and power, and electrically controlled, folding wing mirrors with 'his' and 'hers' memory settings. Also standard is cruise control, the programmable overhead console information centre, leather trim, tinted glass and illuminated vanity mirrors, and 17 inch alloy wheels.

For safety dual front airbags are standard, as are side impact protection guards, and anti-lock brakes. Should you want to tour your Jeep Grand Cherokee at speed abroad, unique tyres designed specifically with high speed motoring in mind allow a top cruising speed of 125 mph, which guarantees superior handling and ultra-short braking distances.

Such attention to detail, a Chrysler design trade mark, can be further seen with air foil windscreen wipers that ensure clear vision during high speed motorway driving, and the tuning of the steering gear and suspension specifically for confidence-inspiring handling at motorway speeds.

POWER PLAY

Jeep Grand Cherokee is now powered by two all-new engines and a thoroughly reworked, more powerful, version of the much-loved 4.0-litre straight six petrol powerplant. The muscular all-new 4.7-litre V8 PowerTech engine, new 3.1-litre five cylinder Turbo diesel and the 4.0-litre straight six petrol engines have been designed specifically to offer better performance, improved fuel consumption, better quality and reliability, and to be quieter and smoother for a more sophisticated and relaxing ride.

David Van Raaphorst, of Jeep Product Planning, says: "We designed these new engines so as to maximise fuel efficiency and to minimise emissions, while setting new standards for performance and refinement.

"For the V8 it meant more usable power, less noise, reduced vibration and less harshness, and greater durability. We have made this V8 one of the most quiet, refined and best sounding petrol powerplants Chrysler has ever developed. This has been done by increasing engine and overall powertrain stiffness, improving the balance of rotating components and upgrading the powertrain mounting systems.

"Engine efficiencies were key goals in the development process. With the extensive use of alternative materials, plus our ability to optimise the air flow by using computer simulations, we have engines that produce more power, use less fuel, and burn cleaner.

"For the Turbo Diesel it meant that we added a cylinder and increased the displacement to meet the demand for added performance."

4.7-LITRE V8

The 4.7-litre V8, offers more usable power, greater torque for improved pulling power and greater durability. It takes Jeep Grand Cherokee to a top speed of 124 mph and from 0-60 mph in eight seconds. The V8 PowerTech engine delivers 220 bhp at 4600 rpm and 291 lb ft of torque at 3300 rpm. Vibration is at a minimum thanks to the use of stiffer structures and moving parts, and by reducing noise from inside the engine. But there is still that distinctive V8 exhaust burble.

Power levels are up thanks to the fast-burn combustion technology. This has the added bonus of improving fuel economy by getting more work from any given amount of fuel, aided by a computer-designed water pump that reduces wasted power. As a result, despite its 4.7 litres, the V8 is capable of 20.8 mpg.

3.1-LITRE TURBO DIESEL

With a third of Jeep Grand Cherokee sales in Europe featuring diesel powerplants, the all-new 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel engine, is a significant option for drivers keen to use the massive pulling power of a diesel unit for the toughest off-road jobs such as towing trailers, caravans and horseboxes. The 3.1 TD, built at VM Motors in Cento, Italy, is the first ever diesel-engined Jeep to be fitted with an automatic transmission as standard, and can tow loads of up to 3500 kg.

The beefy five cylinder 3125 cc Turbo Diesel is smoothly responsive, marrying power, economy and civilised on-road use, to storming off-road capability thanks to its massive 283 lb ft of torque, and a power rating of 138 bhp at 3600 rpm.

None of which does anything to diminish the diesel's forecourt-shy economy. Driving more than 700 miles on a tank of fuel is a feat for any car. But the Turbo Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee will do just that. This is no idle marketing boast, as a 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel travelled all the way from Dover to the North East of Scotland on just one tank of fuel, averaging a miserly 43 mpg, and covering 735 miles (1,176 kilometres) on 78 litres. That works out at an average 42.86 mpg or 6.63 l/100 km. Official economy figures show the Turbo Diesel returns 29.1 mpg extra urban, 24.1 mpg combined, and 19.5 mpg urban cycle.

To minimise noise and vibration, the diesel engine, transmission and transfer case include a set of interconnecting steel struts similar to those used in the 4.0-litre petrol engine. These struts increase the natural vibration frequency of the assembly, which removes a source of annoying vibration. The vibration is further reduced thanks to a new direct-mount air conditioning compressor, as well as improvements to the compact alternator and power steering brackets. A single serpentine belt with automatic tensioner drives all the engine-mounted accessories, which reduces peak bearing loads for quieter operation.

Steve Gray, General Manager Marketing for Chrysler and Jeep says: "Now it is possible to have all of the benefits of the diesel engine with the sophistication and ease of operation of automatic transmission."

4.0-LITRE STRAIGHT SIX PETROL

The 4.0-litre straight six petrol engine has been extensively revised, and as a result is 10 per cent more powerful, delivering 188 bhp at 5000 rpm, 218 lb ft of torque at 3050 rpm, with a top speed of 117 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 10 seconds, returning 23.5 mpg on the extra urban cycle.

Upgrades to the 4.0-litre powerplant make it quieter, but at the same time more powerful and environmentally cleaner. A new splitter-vane water pump is 50 per cent more efficient, and a new cylinder head with reduced-area exhaust ports and new exhaust manifolds expel spent combustion products more efficiently, which also increases power. A lower idle speed helps improve fuel economy.

So that the 4.0-litre Jeep Grand Cherokee is quieter and more relaxing to drive, Chrysler Jeep engineers have worked hard to reduce noise and vibration from the engine, transmission and transfer with a set of steel struts used to interconnect all three. The result is markedly less noise, vibration and harshness perceived by the car's occupants.

ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The fully automatic, electronically controlled multi-speed 45RFE is all-new for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7-litre V8. Another breakthrough comes in the shape of the automatic transmission with the 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel, making it the Jeep with a diesel engine matched to automatic transmission.

The 45RFE automatic transmission and V8 engine have been designed and engineered in harmony and precisely calibrated to bring the best out of one another. The result is a highly sophisticated engine/transmission powertrain that delivers huge amounts of power in a refined, easy-to-use flow, a partnership that also results in improved fuel efficiency and greatly reduced exhaust emissions.

David Van Raaphorst of Chrysler Jeep Product Planning says: "Incorporating optimised gear ratio steps and state-of-the-art features, the 45RFE represents a new level for shift refinement, noise, vibration and harshness characteristics and durability."

The 45RFE Automatic transmission also clearly establishes Jeep Grand Cherokee as a class leader as it is the only 4x4 in its class with the advantage of a reverse gear ratio that is equal to the first gear ratio. For 4x4 drivers, especially the motorist who tows or is used to carrying heavy loads, this is a particularly useful feature.

The 45RFE also has the widest range of gear ratios in any transmission in its class. The innovative design means that, together with the precise step selections, gear shifts with the enormously powerful V8 are silken smooth, while also ensuring that maximum power and keenest fuel economy are maintained no matter what the conditions.

The whole Jeep Grand Cherokee range comes with automatic transmission. The 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel is partnered with a thoroughly re-engineered version of the 44RE electronically controlled four-speed transmission, while the 4.0-litre straight six petrol unit is mated to the proven, totally updated, electronically controlled four-speed 42RE automatic transmission.

4x4 THE QUADRA-DRIVE WAY

Chrysler's all-new Quadra-Drive four-wheel drive system is an industry exclusive for Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Quadra-Drive combines, for the first time, the proven Quadra-Trac ll transfer case with the Vari-Lok progressive front and rear axle differentials. The combined Quadra-Drive system is a new concept in 4x4, delivering class-leading levels of responsiveness and traction on and off road, whatever the conditions, the weather or the terrain, all of it done instantly and automatically, without the driver having to endlessly push buttons or fiddle with levers.

Under normal motoring conditions, all Jeep Grand Cherokees have most of their engine power delivered just to the rear wheels. If the system detects any loss of grip, power is also instantly sent to the front axle, giving back to the driver total control and enhanced traction.

The instant a wheel loses traction, the speed variation between the front and rear axle causes a gerotor pump to apply hydraulic pressure to a multi-disc clutch-plate. This in turn sends power to the front axle. Within fractions of a second, traction and control is seamlessly transferred allowing Grand Cherokee to continue on its way without fuss or worry. The Jeep Grand Cherokee driver may not even notice the gerotor pump doing its job, except for the car's serene and untroubled progress. In another industry breakthrough, the response of the gerotor pump can be tuned to match driving conditions precisely so that the advanced system can be used in the front axle as well as the rear.

The Vari-Lok technology guarantees power is delivered to the wheel with the most grip. This keeps Jeep Grand Cherokee on the move at all times. The beauty of Vari-Lok is that it can deliver far more torque to the wheel that is getting the most grip, than can conventional limited-slip systems. This is because power transfer in a Vari-Lok differential is proportional to wheel speed difference rather than torque difference as is the case with most mechanical limited-slip systems.

The result is a system that is especially effective on surfaces where opposite wheels find themselves on surfaces with very different friction and traction characteristics. Where one wheel is on tarmac and the other on wet grass, or one wheel on ice and the other on track, Vari-Lok comes into its own.

The result is improved handling and stability in wet weather, on slippery roads, in ice, or in rain. As well as getting the maximum possible traction when accelerating, Quadra-Trac ll includes a low range for highly effective off-road operation.

Cherokee Renegade

The Jeep Liberty (also sold as the Jeep Cherokee) is a compact SUV from DaimlerChrysler. The Liberty was introduced in 2002 with styling inspired by the Dakar and Jeepster show cars. It competes with the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Xterra. The Liberty was the first Jeep to use two new PowerTech engines: A 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6. Despite popular belief, the Liberty was not the first Jeep vehicle to use an independent suspension, the Jeep Wagoneer first used it in the 1960s.

4-wheel disc brakes were added for 2003. For 2005, a 2.8 L VM Motori turbodiesel engine became available in the CRD model. Although diesel engines are not familiar in the American market, Jeep reported that they sold 10,000 Liberty CRD models in the first calendar year of sales. Only available is 2005 and 2006, the CRD has since been cancelled because its diesel engine couldn't meet upcoming emissions regulations.

The Liberty has been very successful for Jeep, outselling the Ford Escape in 2005 to become the best-selling compact SUV in the United States. 70 percent of Liberty buyers are new to the Jeep marque, and the Toledo North Assembly factory in Toledo, Ohio is running overtime to produce the model.

The Liberty was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2002.

With the arrival of the new Jeep compact SUVs Compass and Patriot for 2007, a 2008 Liberty is expected to grow considerably and become a mid-size crossover SUV, with competitors such as the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano and Honda Pilot.

In August of 2006, the Chrysler Group announced they were recalling 832,000 Liberty SUVs due to problems with the front suspension lower ball joint. The problem, which affected 2002-2006 models, could potentially cause a loss of steering. Chrysler previously recalled 300,000 Liberty models in 2003 because of a similar problem.

2012 TOYOTA Prius V

The new Toyota Prius V, with "v" expressing the vehicle's versatility, will meet the needs of growing families with active lifestyles while providing the same attributes traditionally found in the Prius DNA. It will share the current generation Prius' platform and Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. Featuring a compact exterior yet spacious interior, the Toyota Prius V will feature over 50-percent more interior cargo space than the current Prius.

With a balance between outstanding spaciousness, refined style, and smooth aerodynamics, Toyota Prius V has a low 0.29 coefficient of drag, which does not inhibit the vehicle's convenient packaging. It is a new vehicle designed from the ground up, with a shape that evolved from Prius rather than being an elongated version.

The exterior styling is sleek, rounded and bold, with an extended roofline that allows the vehicle to retain the triangular silhouette symbolic of Prius. The trapezoidal-shaped front features sharp-edged headlamps, wind-slipping aero corners for improved aerodynamics and an enlarged under grille, which all help create a unique design evolving from the current Prius. Toyota Prius V's rear styling is highlighted by a refined backdoor panel, intricate combination taillights and a specially designed roof spoiler that improves air flow.

Inside, the Toyota Prius V emphasizes overall proportion with spaciousness and flexibility for active families. Comfortable interior space and good visibility has been assisted by a high seating position, ample head room, and an impressive 38-inch couple distance, providing generous rear legroom. A low, wide-opening rear hatch reveals 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, making it the most spacious dedicated hybrid vehicle on the market and better than some compact SUVs.

Comfortable seating for five is specifically designed for young families. Sliding second row seats allow for easier ingress and egress and rear-storage flexibility, with a 45-degree recline for greater comfort. The 60/40 split, folding rear seats present four different seat arrangements that provide excellent usability for passengers and luggage, while a fold-flat front-passenger seat allows for extremely long cargo.

Also available, and a Toyota-first, is a resin Panoramic View moonroof with power retractable sun shades that provides an open atmosphere in the cabin with a 40-percent reduction in weight as compared to conventional glass roofs of the same size, and excellent heat insulation performance.

Up front, instrument-panel controls, including a single-dial air-conditioning control and a center-mounted digital combination meter, provide an advanced look and user-friendly command. The driving controls - including the Push Button Start, parking switch, electronic shift lever, and driving mode selection - are distinguished by silver trim.

Despite the spaciousness of a family friendly midsize vehicle, the Toyota Prius V will deliver estimated EPA fuel economy ratings of 42 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 40 mpg combined, the best fuel economy ratings of any SUV, crossover, or wagon on the market. It will also emit 66-percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle.

Like the current generation Prius, the Toyota Prius V is a showcase of technology that will include many of the same standard features. Four driving modes (Normal, Power, Eco and EV) satisfy a variety of road conditions and driver preferences. A Smart Key System with Push Button Start, an electronic shift lever, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and a back-up camera are standard. Available options include energy-efficient LED headlamps, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with a Pre-Collision System (PCS), and Advanced Parking Guidance System.

For a high level of safety, there are seven airbags, a high-strength cabin and an energy-absorbing body structure with impact beams, cross members and leg absorption pads. New driver and front-passenger seat design helps lessen possible whiplash injury during a collision.

Like all Toyota models, the Prius V will feature Toyota's Star Safety System standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system.

Toyota Prius V will be one of the first Toyotas with the Entune multimedia system. For the first time ever in an automobile, this innovative new system leverages the mobile phone to provide a richer in-vehicle experience with fully integrated and wireless upgradeable navigation, entertainment and information services.

Toyota Entune debuts the first-ever support for engaging mobile apps, such as Bing, OpenTable, and movietickets.com, along with accessing useful travel-related services, such as live weather, traffic, fuel information (location and price), stocks, news and sports.

Toyota Entune brings the largest selection of music options available to a vehicle, including iheartradio's 750+ stations, Pandora's personalized music, the driver's personal songs from portable media players and iPods (via USB or Bluetooth audio streaming), and more than 170 stations from XM satellite radio.

Featuring a best-in-class, advanced conversational voice recognition system that helps the driver to stay focused on the road, Toyota Entune eliminates the need to memorize thousands of voice commands and helps reduce driver distraction.

Entune will also allow for audio read-back and replay capabilities for text messages, with the ability to respond by pre-set "Quick Reply Messages."

Toyota Prius V will combine Entune with a standard Display Audio system rich with dynamic entertainment and communication features. The system will include HD Radio with iTunes tagging for future purchase; XM radio, weather, sports, stocks and local fuel pricing; Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless audio; and full iPod integration including music and video.

A new evolution in hybrid vehicles with excellent cargo space and Prius' heritage of environmental performance and fuel economy, the 2012 Prius V will go on sale in late summer 2011.
