Mazda MX-5 shows its racing ambitions in Los Angeles

Motorsport debut set for 2016

Mazda has introduced the race-spec MX-5 at the Los Angeles Auto Show ahead of its motorsport debut set for 2016.

The road-going 2016MY Miata looks manlier than ever before and now Mazda has made the roadster appear even more butch thanks to a track-only version. It will participate in a new Global Cup series set to take place in Europe, North America and Asia starting in 2016, with the season finale taking place at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California.

At the moment of writing Mazda hasn't released any technical specifications about the car, but they did say it will be powered by a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In the months to come Mazda will put the finishing touches on all of the specs, such as suspension, powertrain, tires and the other components, as well as technical partners.

It should be mention the track-ready MX-5 Miata will be sold by a sole supplier as a "ready to race" vehicle, something which Mazda hasn't done before.
