More land yacht than Passat GTI

Volkswagen has unveiled the 2014 Passat Sport.

Previewed by the Passat Performance concept, the production model has a familiar design but is distinguished by fog lights, a rear spoiler and 19-inch Luxor-style alloy wheels. Three different colors are available including Candy White, Tungsten Silver and an exclusive Urano Gray.

The cabin comes nicely equipped with sport seats, faux carbon fiber trim and alloy pedals. Other highlights include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, stainless steel door plates and special floor mats.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 bhp (126 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. Volkswagen wisely declined to release performance specifications but confirmed the car can be equipped with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Passat Sport will go on sale early next year and pricing starts at $27,295 (including an $820 destination and handling charge).
