GLK to become GLC

New details are emerging about Mercedes-Benz's plan to overhaul the naming structure of its SUV lineup.

Lately we have been hearing rumors about Mercedes-Benz's decision to rename their crossover & SUV offerings in order to better reflect their size. All high-riding models will use the "GL" designation followed by a third letter which will represent the position of the model. This has already happened with the "GLA" which is related to the A-Class and will be followed by the "GLK" that will be renamed "GLC" in relation to the C-Class.

Using the same method, the M-Class is set to become "GLE" as a connection to the E-Class. There's also going to be a "GLE Coupe" (previously known as ML Coupe) which will target the BMW X6. Lastly, the bigger "GL" will be renamed "GLS" as a reference to the S-Class.

It is believed Mercedes-Benz will also apply this new nomenclature strategy on their sports car range and as a consequence the next-gen "SLK" will be sold with the "SLC" designation.
