Alpina XD3 Biturbo revealed for Geneva

Alpina XD3 Biturbo revealed for Geneva

2013 Alpina XD3 Biturbo

350 HP and 700 Nm

Alpina has presented its own take on the BMW X3 today at the kickoff of the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

At its heart is a straight-six, full-aluminum 3.0-liter engine with two turbochargers, common-rail direct injection and variable turbine geometry. It has a maximum output of 350 HP (257 kW) at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) reached between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm.

Despite the powerful engine, the Alpina XD3 Biturbo manages to have a fuel consumption of only 6.8 liters / 100 km (41.5 mpg US or 34.5 mpg UK) while CO2 emissions stand at 180 g/km. This was possible thanks to the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission designed specifically for this model.

Other highlights of this heavily modified X3 include electronically-adjustable dampers, 20-inch Alpina Classic wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport low-profile tires, custom exhaust manifold, stainless steel exhaust system with dual double-ended tailpipes, along with several interior enhancements such as a sport steering wheel with blue/green stitching, door sills, floor mats, gear indicator and a digital speed read-out.

2013 BMW 135is First Look

2013 BMW 135is

In the long standing tradition of high performance BMW "is" models, BMW today announced an enhanced performance version of the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible called the BMW 135is. The 2013 135is Coupe and Convertible focus the qualities that made the 135i such a success amongst driving enthusiasts - with more performance, enhanced sound and dynamic design details. Both the new 135is Coupe and Convertible are scheduled to arrive in BMW Center showrooms this fall with retail pricing set at $44,145 and $48,845 respectively (including $895 destination and handling).

Both models are equipped with BMW's award winning TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine (N55) featuring Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, direct injection and a single twin-scroll turbocharger. For the 135is, the engine has been tuned to increase peak horsepower to 320 hp (+20 hp increase) and 317 lb-ft of torque (+17 lb.ft) while maintaining the same emissions level and MPG ratings of the 135i. A Performance exhaust system complements the increased engine performance and provides a sporty exhaust tone. The engine cooling system has been upgraded to match the additional performance output by adding a larger, and more powerful radiator fan and an auxiliary radiator.

Both BMW 135is models will be offered with either a standard 6-Speed manual transmission or an optional 7-Speed Double Clutch Transmission.

The 135is is equipped with sport suspension incorporating an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel.

The exterior of the new 135is Coupe / Convertible will be clearly identified by exclusive 18" wheels, unique high-gloss black kidney grill, black mirror caps and special exterior badges in additional to the standard M Sport Package components. Interior highlights include stainless steel pedals, special interior badges and optional black leather seats with blue stitching for the standard sport seats.

The BMW135is Coupe and Convertible are available to order now and are scheduled to arrive in BMW Center showrooms this fall.

Prepare For The Ferrari Enzo Hybrid

Ferrari Enzo hybrid

There have been rumors circulating for some time that Ferrari was looking to introduce a hybrid. Now, Chairman Luca Di Montezemolo has indeed confirmed that such a car is on its way, scheduled for introduction by the end of this year.

Using a version of Ferrari's HY-KERS Kinetic Energy Recovery System, the most recent iteration of which was seen at the Beijing Motor Show this year, the new car will be Ferrari's next generation flagship and carry the name Enzo.

"We have a complete new model range brimming with technological innovations," Di Montezemolo recently said. "At the end of the year we'll also be unveiling the new Enzo, a limited series model and our first ever hybrid car."

Sporting a mid-mounted V12 gasoline engine - not front mounted like the 599 Fiorano HY-KERS test mule shown above - seven-speed transmission and dual electric motors the new Ferrari flagship promises to deliver a whopping 920 horsepower.

As other hi-performance vehicle manufacturers are finding out, hybridization is becoming like the new turbo or super charging. Instead of force-feeding more fuel for more power, electric motors elegantly create more power without the need for any fuel. Ferrari's two motors in this car will consist of a main unit mounted behind the gearbox and auxiliary power unit on the side of the engine.

In order to achieve the best possible power-to-weight-ratio, the new Enzo will feature extensive use of carbon fiber in its construction and as a result, likely dizzying levels of acceleration, braking and handling.here have been rumors circulating for some time that Ferrari was looking to introduce a hybrid. 2013 Aston Martin DBS V12 Supercar

2013 Aston Martin DBS V12 Supercar

Ladies and gentleman, time to take out your magnifying glasses and open a couple of windows to compare these fresh scoop pictures of the 2014 Aston Martin DBS to its current namesake.

Note that according to some sources, Aston Martin may replace the DBS nameplate with a new one, though we have yet to hear this from channels.

To save you some research time, we can tell you that the 2013 model year DBS or whatever Aston Martin decides to call it, adopts some styling cues from the One-77 such as the more heavily arched front and rear panels, the door mirrors along with new front and rear lights, and grille and bumper designs.

If your mind goes to a heavy facelift, you are right as it’s not only the styling that remains more or less the same, but its underpinnings, including the chassis and the V12 engine, as well.

Of course, Aston Martin engineers will fettle around with the VH alloy frame and its suspension components as well as with the 6.0-liter V12 engine, which should produce around 550-horses (558PS), up from the current model’s 510hp (517PS).

Other rumored changes include a brand new interior with modern gadgetry and features.

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera LP620-4

2012 lamborghini gallardo

As evocative and downright exotic Wheelsandmore has been with their tuning projects, we can't help but wonder if they end up running out of ideas at some point.

Apparently, their recent run of new programs for some of the most powerful cars on the planet is proving that notion to be completely untrue.

For their latest offering, the German tuner has set its sights on a car that needs no introduction: the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera LP570-4.

Every Wheelsandmore tuning program always carries a standard performance upgrade and the “Green Beret,” as the company has called this baby, is no different. The German tuner went and combined a digitally program-able, remote-operated valve control with special carbon-frame airfilters and a remapped ECU unit with a handmade, stainless steel exhaust system, effectively giving the Gallardo Superleggera a sinister performance upgrade.

How sinister? Well, from the standard 570 horsepower coming out of the super car's 5.2-liter V10 engine, Wheelsandmore managed to increase that to a powerful 620 horsepower, hence the LP620-4 designation.

But more than just the mechanical improvements, Wheelsandmore also gave the Italian supercar a new set of fancy 20″ 6Sporz handcrafted, multi-piece forged wheels that are rotating at the steering axle and wrapped in 5p Continental Sport Contact tires. Other improvements for the Green Beret include a new race established special coilover with adjustable rebound and compression, hydraulically liftable around 1.77 inch, and called LCS (level-control-system).

For a tuner that has made a living out of programs like this, the Green Beret is yet another feather in the hat of these guys.

2012 Mazda 3 i Grand Touring with SKYACTIV engine

2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv i Grand Touring design

Five weeks ago, we gave you our first impressions based on a very short (fewer than 100 miles) time behind the wheel of the Mazda 3 Skyactiv. Bottom line for the link-averse, it was all good things we expect from Mazda in general and the Mazda 3 in particular, with some promising gas mileage figures (we averaged 29.5 miles per gallon, the EPA estimates are 28 city, 40 highway).

The first car was a bare-bones stock model…zero options, with a price tag of $19,300 plus delivery charges.

This time around, things were different. Mazda USA’s press folks sent an i Grand Touring model with Skyactiv. Base price $4,000 higher at $22,300…and there were options.

The tester added the Technology Package…blind spot monitoring system, Sirius satellite radio, perimeter alarm, rain-sensing front wipers, bi-xenon headlights with auto-leveling, pivoting adaptive front lighting system and auto on/off headlights. Price tag for that package? $1,400. So, with the $795 for delivery, the bottom line on this Mazda 3 Skyactiv wound up at $24,495. And although that’s very nearly 5 grand or 20 percent more than the one we reviewed in early January, it’s exactly how we’d order one if we were buying.

Stepping up to the i Grand Touring from the i Touring model gets you the same basic underpinnings (2.0 liter, 155 horsepower 4, 16-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes) but brings a moonroof, center armrest, heated front seats, compact nav system with color display and color multi-information display to the party, along with an upgrade to a 265-watt Bose Centerpoint audio system. And, if you check “Dune” instead of “Black” on the interior color option box, the result is a pleasing two-tone that lightens and brightens the mood inside the car.

Skyactiv, as we described before, is Mazda’s solution to better gas mileage without the complexity of a hybrid system and with the payoff of improved performance thanks to lower weight, and a more efficient engine/transmission combo.

This time, we put a near-TireKicker record 840 miles on the Mazda 3 in our week at the wheel…and unlike our usual 60/40 mix of city streets and urban freeways, it was more like 80/20…and the 20 was in the worst stop-and-go freeway driving you’re likely to encounter this side of Manhattan.

Our average? 33 miles per gallon. That’s impressive when you figure that the EPA estimate is 28 city, 40 highway. Even our freeway miles weren’t at highway speeds…or not many of them and not for long. So our entire 840 miles was the equivalent of what the EPA considers city….and we beat the estimate by 5 MPG…and equalled the EPA’s combined fuel economy estimate.

Smart ForTwo BoConcept Edition

Posted on 03.4.2013 15:00 by
Kirby Garlitos

Collaborations are always happening in the auto industry. Whether it's with a fashion label, a timepiece maker or even a furniture company, there aren’t any shortages of partnerships that give birth to special-edition models.

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, smart is bringing one special edition model, called the fortwo BoConcept.

Built and designed in collaboration with the Danish interior design company BoDesign, the fortwo Concept is based on the cabriolet version of the [fortwo->http://www.topspeed.com/cars/smart/2012-smart-fortwo-ar124008.html and was designed to really catch peoples' attention.

For starters, the fortwo BoConcept was given a matte-white paint, and complemented by a roof and door mirrors that were treated to a matte oriental brown metallic finish. The exterior is then fitted with a set of Brabus Monoblock VII alloy wheels to give off a pretty impressive look for a smart fortwo.

Inside, smart and BoDesign wanted to recreate a mobile living space and, for the most part, they accomplished that by using such materials like tobacco brown leather covers the steering wheel, seats and door trim panels, a grey finish on the doors and backrests, light-lemon stitching on the seats and the steering wheel, and a few more yellow accents on the mirrors.

All told, there really is something about the fortwo BoConcept that catches your attention. Take away the fact that it’s a fortwo for a second and concentrate on the uniqueness of the product; that’s what makes this collaboration pretty special.

Though the official debut of the special edition Hundra will not happen until tomorrow, YouTube user, Shmee150, managed to shoot a video of the supercar on the Geneva floor. As its name suggests - "Hundra" is the Swedish word for one hundred - this special edition was developed to celebrate the 100 Koenigsegg units built in 10 years.

As the video reveals, the one-off Hundra will feature a carbon-fiber body combined with celebratory, artisan hand-laid and swirled 24-carat gold leaf inlays. The same treatment will also be applied to the interior. No details have been revealed just yet, but we're sure the 5.0-liter turbocharged V-8 engine will be tricked to deliver more than the standard 1,030 horsepower.

We have no idea how much this car will cost in the end, but we bet it will be something similar to the Lamborghini Veneno, which will also unveiled in Geneva.

6x6 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG production confirmed [video]

Twin-turbo V8 with 536 hp

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed plans to build 20-30 units of the 6x6 G63 AMG every year.

The exotic three-axle G-Class will be approximately three times more expensive than the regular G63 AMG (137,000 EUR), making it the second most pricy Mercedes-Benz model after the SLS Electric Drive (416,500 EUR). It is expected to go on sale this October.

According to Autoweek, the car is based on the G320 CDI developed for the Australian army and is 5867mm (231.3 inches) long, 2111mm (83.1 inches) wide and 2209mm (87 inches) tall, which makes it 1105mm (43.5 inches) longer, 226mm (8.9 inches) wider and 272mm (10.7 inches) taller than the standard 2013 G63 AMG.

The military version has a 3.0-liter diesel engine and a five-speed automatic version but this civilian model sports a V8 5.5-liter bi-turbo engine producing 536 hp (400 kW) and 560 lb-ft (758 Nm) of torque. The power unit is linked to a seven-speed 7G-tronic transmission.

Chief of G-Class development Axel Harries says the car will do 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than 6 seconds on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h). He also mentioned the 6x6 G63 AMG returns 13 mpg US (15.6 mpg UK or 18 liters / 100 km).

It boasts an impressive ground clearance of 460mm (18.1 inches) and weighs 3,775 kg (8,322 lbs). It rides on huge 37-inch wheels, with approach and departure angles of 52 degrees (up by 16) and 54 degrees (up by 27), respectively. It also has a stainless steel roll cage and a payload capacity of 650 kg (1,433 lbs).

Mini has unveiled a special-edition John Cooper Works Countryman to celebrate the company’s huge success their triumph in the Dakar Rally 2013 where Stephane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret have driven their MINI ALL4 Racing to overall victory. This new special edition, dubbed the ALL4 Dakar Winner, will be limited to only 11 units - a tribute to Peterhansel's 11 Dakar wins and it will be sold exclusively in Peterhansel's home country of France.

On the exterior, this special edition uses the same colors seen on the MINI ALL4 Racing: a matte-black body combined with special bright-green racing stripes. The exterior will be distinguished by Dakar Rally winner’s logo and the Peterhansel’s signature on the bonnet. As with any other special edition, the new John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 Dakar Winner received new 19-inch light-alloy wheels in Cross-Spoke Crusher design.

On the interior, the same black used on the exterior is combined with green contrast stitching on the gearshift lever gaiter and floor mats and, green stripes on the center console. Each unit will also be further identified by a special-edition logo and with the serial number placed above the glove compartment.

There is no mention of performance upgrades, so we can only assume that this special edition retains the same 211-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that is good for 221 pound-feet of peak torque. This sprints the JCW Countryman to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

Alfa Romeo 6C envisioned

 Alfa Romeo 6C envisioned

Alfa Romeo 6C render / Alex Imnadze

An Italian muscle car

IED Torino student Alex Imnadze has revived the Alfa Romeo 6C through these renders.

The 6C is digitally imagined with a rear-wheel drive, front-engine layout as a rival for the Corvette Stingray, Chevrolet Camaro or the Ford Mustang. Alexander says the design is inspired from classical shapes of Italian cars such as the original 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C, as well as from the 8C and Pininfarina's 2uettottanta concept from 2010.

The Italian muscle car as Alexander describes it follows another interesting concept (see attached photos) shown last December which represented a new Lamborghini model inspired by the firm's Miura, Estoque and Diablo models.

Range Rover Evoque to get 9-speed automatic transmission

Range Rover Evoque to get 9-speed automatic transmission

2013 Range Rover Evoque with 9-speed automatic transmission

Developed by ZF

Land Rover will showcase in Geneva the Range Rover Evoque fitted with the world's first nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Developed by ZF, the 9HP transmission will serve as a replacement for the 6-speed variant available across the AWD versions of the Evoque. Land Rover says it will bring "significant improvements in real world fuel economy" and "corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions." Shift quality should also be improved thanks to closer ratios which will also reduce noise at higher speeds and improve acceleration response.

ZF's 9HP gearbox features a skip-shift function which will skip gears under fast deceleration or acceleration. Land Rover says the lowest ratio in this transmission is a lot lower than the current 6-speed auto and has been developed specifically for off-road use, towing and more difficult on-road conditions.

Towards the end of last year, ZF's CEO Stefan Sommer described the nine-speed automatic gearbox as the "natural limit" since adding more gears would increase weight and complexity that can't be offset by fuel economy gains.

Volkswagen unveils production version of XL1 plug-in hybrid

Volkswagen unveils production version of XL1 plug-in hybrid

By Kevin Davis on Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Volkswagen (VW) announced the production version of its XL1 plug-in hybrid, which the company claims to be the most fuel-efficient production car in the world.

The 2014 Volkswagen XL1 will make debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year.

The two-seater XL1 includes a 47-hp two-cylinder turbocharged direct injection (TDI) engine, a 27-hp electric motor, a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a lithium-ion battery.

The XL1 can cover a distance of up to 50 kilometer (km) in all-electric mode and therefore with zero local emissions. In all-electric mode, the XL1 requires less than 0.1 kilowatt per hour (kWh) to cover a driving distance of over 1 km. The XL1, with a top speed of 160 km/h, can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 12.7 seconds, according to VW.

VW plans to produce XL1 by handcrafting-like production methods at its Osnabr ck plant in Germany.

Press Release:

The XL1 from Volkswagen is the most fuel-efficient production car in the world, with a European combined fuel consumption rating of 261 mpg. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid system, this two-seat vehicle can also cover up to 32 miles as a zero-emissions vehicle in all-electric mode.

The XL1 is an automotive standout that follows pure sports-car design principles: light weight (1753 pounds), exceptional aerodynamics (Cd 0.19), and a low center of gravity. This super-efficient Volkswagen thus has the ability to cruise down the road at a constant 62 mph while using just 8.3 horsepower. In all-electric mode, the XL1 requires less than 0.1 kWh to cover more than a kilometer.

The XL1 emits just 21 g/km of CO2, thanks to its high-tech lightweight design, aerodynamic efficiency, and a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 47-hp two-cylinder TDI engine, a 27-hp electric motor, a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a lithium-ion battery. The 261 mpg fuel consumption figure is a record that has not been achieved by any other vehicle to date, showing that Volkswagen is redefining what is technically feasible in the automotive industry. The XL1 also has a top speed of 99 mph and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 12.7 seconds.

Conceptually, the XL1 represents the third evolutionary stage of Volkswagen's 1-liter car strategy. When the new millennium was ushered in, Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Pi ch, currently Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG, formulated the visionary goal of putting into production a practical car that had combined fuel consumption of one liter per 100 km (235 mpg). In the two-seat XL1, this vision has become reality.

Despite the tremendous efficiency of the XL1, the engineers and designers successfully came up with a body design which delivers more everyday utility than the two previous prototypes. In the L1, the 1-liter car that was shown in 2002 and 2009, the driver and passenger sat in a tandem arrangement for optimal aerodynamics; in the XL1, the two occupants sit slightly offset, side by side, almost like a conventional vehicle.

The XL1 is 153.1 inches long, 65.6 in wide, and just 45.4 in tall. By comparison, a Volkswagen Polo is slightly longer (156.3 in) and wider (66.2 in), but is significantly taller (57.6 in). Even a purebred sports car like today's Porsche Boxster is 5.1 inches taller. The XL1 will look spectacular going down the highway-a car of the future, built for today.

This is the McLaren P1 production version

This is the McLaren P1 production version

2013 McLaren P1 production version

With 916 HP

The first official images with the 2013 McLaren P1 production version have surfaced the web ahead of the supercar's debut set for next week in Geneva.

Sporting a bright yellow paint, the P1 shows its production face with carbon air vents on the corners of the front bumper. It sits on street tires and adopts a tighter mesh for the rear end vent. These new characteristics were announced at the end of last year by McLaren during a private presentation held in New York.

Last week we found out its hybrid powertrain will generate 916 HP (674 kW). It consists of a V8 3.8-liter mid-mounted, twin-turbo gasoline engine producing 737 HP (542 kW) and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) of torque coupled to an electric motor that provides an extra 179 HP (132 kW) and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm).

Full details will be revealed in early March at the Geneva Motor Show.

Priced from 866,000 GBP

McLaren has officially revealed the P1 production version, ahead of the car's debut scheduled for next week in Geneva.

A couple of hours ago we published the first official images with the production version of the P1 and now McLaren has decided to reveal all details about their new supercar. Limited to 375 units, the McLaren P1 will have a starting price of 866,000 GBP and 1,150,000 USD (approx 1,004,800 EUR). McLaren originally planned 500 units but Ron Dennis decided to make only 375 cars after meeting with potential owners who were concerned more about the car's exclusivity rather than top speed or price tag.

With Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) turned on, the P1 will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than three seconds, while 0-200 km/h (124 mph) takes under seven seconds. It needs 17 seconds from 0 to 300 km/h (186 mph), before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

IPAS is basically the electric motor which can be activated via a steering wheel-mounted button which will give the P1 the throttle response of a normally-aspirated engine, according to McLaren. Another button on the steering wheel is labeled DRS – Drag Reduction System. If pressed, the rear wing reduces in angle to lower drag by 23 percent. This can be turned off by pressing the brake pedal or releasing the button.

P1's heart and soul is a hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin-turbo, V8 3.8-liter mid-mounted engine generating 737 HP (542 kW) at 7,500 rpm and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) of torque from 4,000 rpm and an electric motor adding 179 HP (132 kW) and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm). The McLaren P1 has a combined output of 916 HP (674 kW) and 663 lb-ft (900 Nm). Power is transferred to the ground via a 7-speed twin clutch Graziano gearbox. It can be driven on electric power for 20 km (12.4 miles) at an average speed of 30 mph (48 km/h).

The McLaren P1 has a drag coefficient of 0.34 and can generate 600 kg (1,322 lbs) of downforce (5x more than MP4-12C). It has a carbon fiber chassis which weighs 100 kg (220 lbs), making it the lightest ever installed on a road car and capable of providing F1-like safety and rigidity, according to the British firm. Compared to the legendary F1, its successor is 300mm longer and slightly wider and longer than the MP4-12C. It tips the scales at only 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) thanks to its lightweight construction.

It has CO2 emissions of less than 200 g/km and rides on bespoke Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. Stopping power comes from discs featuring a new type of carbon ceramic which hasn't been used so far on a road car, only in space. This material is stronger than regular carbon ceramic and dissipates heat more effectively. In addition, these discs are lighter than usual and boast a custom ceramic layer coat on the friction surfaces for a mirrored look.

Moving inside the cabin, the McLaren P1 features a driver-oriented cockpit where carbon fiber is the primary material. All carbon surfaces lack the top layer of resin which would have added 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs). Steering column and seats are adjustable, while the seat backrests are fixed at a 28-degree angle, but a 32-degree change is available for increasing helmet clearance. The extremely thin carbon seat shell weighs only 10.5 kg (23.1 lbs).

Although focus was on making it as light as possible, McLaren has added amenities such as satellite navigation, climate control and premium audio system. However, the list of comfort features ends here since this was built primarily as a driver's car, with the position of the driver being individually configurable and with a digital dash showing all relevant information in typical racing style.

- BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (2010)

BMW X6 ActiveHybrid
BMW announced the production version of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid makes its world premiere at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) and will reach US BMW Centers in fourth-quarter 2009. ActiveHybrid technology provides a glimpse into the future, achieving outstanding driving dynamics with equally impressive efficiency. It melds both of these qualities to offer a truly unique driving experience. The world's first Sports Activity Coupe with full hybrid drive capitalizes on the options offered by combining the combustion engine with electric motors to create a powertrain with new levels dynamic performance and efficiency.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers a significant increase in driving dynamics and at the same time reduces fuel consumption by approximately 20 percent versus a comparable vehicle powered by a combustion engine alone. The result is even greater driving pleasure combined with enhanced fuel economy and CO2 management providing the kind of progress to make the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid a genuine BMW in the hybrid market.

The overall drive system featured in the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid consists of a 400 hp twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine and two electric synchronous motors delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively. Maximum system output is 480 hp, and peak torque reaches 575 lb-ft.

Precisely controlled interaction of the three power units optimizes the overall efficiency of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid at all speeds, with acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Top speed of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is limited electronically to 130 mph, with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle improved by roughly 20%, and a CO2 emission rating of 231 grams per kilometer. EPA ratings will be available closer to the market introduction.

BMW's first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on electric power - and that is entirely free of CO2 - up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), with the combustion engine being activated automatically whenever required.

These performance figures are made possible by utilizing a two-mode active transmission. The ideal combination of the two power modes can be controlled for enhanced efficiency and dynamic performance in any driving condition. With the two electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four multi-plate clutches, drive power is transmitted through a 7-speed automatic transmission. As would be expected in a BMW, the driver can operate the transmission manually. BMW's lauded xDrive all-wheel-drive system distributes the power between the front and rear axles.

The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH high-performance battery pack positioned beneath the floor of the luggage compartment. This battery pack also feeds electric power to the vehicle's on-board network. Luggage compartment capacity is therefore the same as on the original BMW X6. On brake application and/or on deceleration, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and is stored in the battery pack. To provide this function either one or both of the electric motors act as a generator, feeding electric power generated back into the high-voltage battery.

Unique efficiency ensured by two-mode active transmission.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been developed specifically for use in a particularly dynamic vehicle and for a broad range of practical use. The big advantage, therefore, is optimization of drivetrain efficiency in all speed ranges and conditions.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT (electric continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate modes. One mode is for stop-and-go driving and low speeds, and the second is for driving at higher speeds.

From a stop and at low speeds, only one of the two electric motors is activated. As soon as the driver requires more power or increased speed, the second electric motor automatically starts the combustion engine. The second electric motor then serves as a generator to provide a supply of electric power to the vehicle systems. When driving steadily at a higher speed most of the power required is delivered by the combustion engine in a largely mechanical process. Here again, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator.

The mechanical components, including three planetary gearsets and the two electric motors, combine to provide for seven total effective gears. This configuration manages the power generated by the combustion engine and two electric motors in a way that maximizes driving versatility.

Twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine with High Precision Direct Injection.

The combustion engine is the innovative reverse-flow V8 first featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world's first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders develops power throughout the entire engine speed range. The spontaneous and direct response of this engine results from its compact configuration, which allows the shortest exhaust manifolds.

Displacing 4.4 liters, this outstanding engine delivers its maximum output of 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. Peak torque of 450 lb-ft is maintained from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm, with High Precision Direct Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times. Piezo-injectors positioned in the combustion chambers between the valves ensure a smooth, efficient and clean combustion process. The engine fulfils the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II standards in the US.

Compared with the engine featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i, this version has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. There is no starter, alternator, or belt drive for the air-conditioning compressor and hydraulic pump. The dual-circuit cooling system has been modified for all-electric operation.

Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra fuel.

When accelerating, the V8 engine of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid joins forces with the electric motors to ensure optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. When the driver requires more power, the two electric motors supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This boost effect significantly increases the overall output of the vehicle, without increasing fuel consumption.

While the two electric motors have almost the same output, they have been modified in their performance characteristics to meet specific requirements. The power delivered is 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively, with peak torque values of 192 lb-ft and 206 lb-ft.

The electric motors support the combustion engine effectively throughout the entire speed range. The additional electrically-generated drive power reduces the power output required of the combustion engine when driving at steady highway speeds. Load shifts are managed to give the overall system enhanced efficiency under the full spectrum of driving conditions. During kick-down and maximum acceleration shifts, the electric motors help provide an additional boost of power.

Maximum system output is 480 hp, with peak torque of 575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world, with acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds and top speed is limited electronically to 130 mph.

All-electrical driving mode reducing emissions to zero.

With its combination of two-mode active transmission and high-performance battery pack, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is able to run on its electric motors alone at low speeds. This makes it a zero-emission vehicle under such conditions.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid may run on electric power alone regardless of the ambient temperature, as long as minimum operating temperatures are reached for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and high-voltage battery. Top speed in the electric mode is 37 mph, maximum range is 1.6 miles.

While driving electrically, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid retains all its safety and comfort functions. The brakes remain fully operative thanks to electric vacuum supply, and don't require the combustion engine to develop their full effect. The same applies to the Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance being generated on demand by an electric motor.

Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any restrictions, running efficiently on an electrically operated air-conditioning compressor. Since the battery pack supplies the electric power to the 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter, all other systems such as the lights, infotainment, and safety systems remain fully functional.

Energy Regeneration: Electric power generated without additional fuel consumption.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the electric motors act as generators when coasting or applying the brakes in order to feed electric power into the battery pack.

This process recaptures energy which would otherwise be lost in conventional vehicles in the form of heat escaping through the brakes. Depending on road speed, one or both of the electric motors may perform the regeneration function.

The power delivered by the generator is approximately 50 kW, about 25 times as much as the power provided by BMW's original Brake Energy Regeneration.

Generator delivering electrical braking force.

In the generator mode, the two electric motors recapture much of the energy that must be dissipated to slow the vehicle. The stopping force generated in this way is up to 0.3 G, significantly reducing the demands on the mechanical brake system.

Sensotronic Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6 may be used at any time without a direct mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded by sensors and split by a control unit into brake power generated by regeneration and conventional hydraulic braking. At the same time an integrated pedal force simulator generates the usual brake feeling for the driver as an additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution.

The active brake servo builds up brake pressure with electrical control according to the signals emitted by the control unit. To ensure brake power assistance also in the all-electric mode, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid employs an electrical vacuum pump. A mechanical failsafe function guarantees full operation of the brake system in the event of a failure or a fault in the electrical system. In this case, the stopping power required is generated by the hydraulic system alone, like on a conventional vehicle.

The primary task of the SBA system is to maximize the use of brake force available through the regeneration process. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is able to transmit regenerative brake forces to all four wheels. And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3 meters/sec, the control unit builds up additional brake force through the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo.

In braking situations critical to driving stability, the control unit receives additional signals from Dynamic Stability Control, affecting brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle safely on course. This ensures safe braking under all conditions, regardless of whether the stopping power needed is generated electrically or hydraulically.

All driving stability systems are tailored to the dynamic character of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. Dynamic Traction Control, for example, provides maximum traction and drive power on loose surfaces such as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip thresholds. And with the DTC mode activated, the driver may opt for a particularly sporting style of driving all the way to a controlled slip in corners.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for extra performance, optimum driving stability and traction.

The sporty driving behavior of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is due largely to BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Electronically controlled, variable distribution of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid superior traction and enhanced driving dynamics.

xDrive features smooth division of drive power through a transfer case with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch that feeds power to the axle with optimum wheel contact and grip on the road. Under normal conditions BMW xDrive distributes drive power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 split. Sensors constantly measure wheel slip at both the front and rear, and varies the balance of drive power within a fraction of a second. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, xDrive "looks ahead" and does not only respond when a wheel has already begun to spin.

Electronic Power Steering for even greater efficiency.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is the first Sports Activity Vehicle to feature Electronic Power Steering. This allows variable steering assistance both when driving with the combustion engine and in the all-electric mode.

Electronic Power Steering on the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid comes complete with fully integrated speed-related Servotronic steering assistance. Servotronic reduces assistance at high speeds ensuring not only directional stability but also extremely precise steering behavior in corner. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example when parking, extra power assistance significantly reduces the steering forces required.

Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the high-performance battery pack.

The high-voltage, nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH) battery pack featured in the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid has a total capacity of 2.4 kWh, with 1.4 kWh available nominally. Maximum output is 57 kW, with the battery's control unit constantly determining the output level currently available as well as the charge status of the battery.

The high-performance battery pack comes with its own liquid cooling system incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery pack through the flow of air from the outside and, additionally, through a cooling circuit from the air conditioning system. These two circuits are activated either individually or in combination with one another, depending on need, with the control unit selecting the most effective and efficient cooling option as a function of ambient temperature and the temperature of the battery pack.

Cooling by the air conditioning system is activated by an appropriate switch valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on automatically whenever required. The battery cooling function is separate from the vehicle interior cooling function. Using the air conditioning system for battery pack cooling is far more efficient and effective than using air cooling alone to maintain the battery pack at the optimum operating temperature thereby preserving the hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and sport driving conditions. As befits The Ultimate Driving Machine, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid provides a driving experience like no other hybrid in the marketplace.

Intelligent energy management and integral safety concept.

The electronics for BMW ActiveHybrid have been developed especially for energy efficiency and driving flexibility. The control system constantly controls the distribution of energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle, and the demands made by the driver. The two overriding control factors are the charge status of the battery pack and the capture of energy generated through regeneration.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid fulfills BMW's integral safety concepts that have been updated for hybrid vehicles. Examples of the features of this safety concept are the different colors of cables to avoid confusion, the presentation of clear safety warnings, and protection of the entire electrical system via extra-large insulation panels and newly developed connectors.

The high-voltage battery pack is housed in a reinforced steel casing and is located just above the rear axle at an extremely safe location in the event of a collision. The status of the battery pack is constantly supervised by integrated safety electronics, and the driver will be informed immediately of any malfunction and, if necessary, the entire system can be automatically discharged and deactivated. In the event of a crash, the system is switched off automatically within a fraction of a second. The central safety electronics then assess the severity of the accident and ensure a safe operating mode if possible.

Hybrid-specific Auto Start Stop function.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is equipped with a new generation of Auto Start Stop technology, specifically tailored to the requirements of a hybrid vehicle. Auto Start Stop functions at all ambient temperatures. While the engine is switched off, the electric air-conditioning compressor automatically maintains the climate and temperature desired within the passenger compartment. All other electrically operated functions continue uninterrupted, with the on-board network supplied with power from the battery pack. The hybrid Auto Start Stop can be deactivated by choosing the Manual gearshift mode on the automatic transmission.

Displays inform the driver of the operating status and efficiency of the hybrid system.

Status of the hybrid system and current operating conditions are presented in two locations. The most important information is shown in the instrument cluster, separated according to operating mode. Further information and technical explanations are shown in the Central Display.

The drive displays are split into a conventional tachometer for the combustion engine and electric drive display in the lower part of the instrument cluster. The electric drive display shows the charge status of the battery pack, the regeneration status, and the electric motor operating status. In the Central Display, this information is supplemented by additional data on current operating conditions and the current flow of energy.

Specific set-up of the suspension and the lightweight brakes.

The chassis and suspension of the BMW Active Hybrid X6 is largely the same as the technology already featured on the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The front suspension is a double A-arm configuration ensuring excellent driving dynamics, comfort, and directional stability. Self-leveling with air suspension provides a constant ride height, even when carrying a heavy load.

Lightweight brakes decelerate the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid by means of aluminum floating calipers and brake rotors incorporating aluminum hubs (or hats). Lightweight materials engineering reduces unsprung mass and improves the vehicle's driving comfort and agility. Brake disc diameter is 15.2 inches up front and 13.6 inches at the rear.

20-inch light-alloy Aero wheels featuring an aerodynamically optimized design have been developed exclusively for the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. 19-inch light-alloy wheels with all-season tires are available as an option. In each case the tires feature runflat technology which enables the driver to continue driving after a complete loss of pressure.

Bodyshell and safety: intelligent lightweight construction, optimized occupant safety.

Intelligent lightweight construction and a special body structure for maximum rigidity also characterize the unibody of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid comes with three-point inertia-reel seat belts for all seats featuring belt force limiters and belt pretensioners on the front seats. To protect the occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a collision at the rear, the front seats feature crash-activated headrests, the rear seats come as standard with ISOFIX child seat fastenings. The vehicle is equipped with frontal and hip thorax airbags, and side-curtain head airbags.

All restraint systems are controlled by central safety electronics including rollover sensors. The system can activate the side-curtain airbags and belt pretensioners in the event of an impending rollover.

Standard adaptive bi-xenon headlights ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead by steering with the vehicle. A daytime running light function operates through the corona rings. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid also features a windshield-mounted sensor that automatically controls the lights and windshield wipers on demand. Additional comfort at night is provided by available Automatic High Beams which will automatically dim the high beam headlights when an oncoming vehicle is detected. The standard Head-Up Display projects information relevant to the driver onto the windscreen.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid: Sports Activity Coupe of the highest standard, BMW ActiveHybrid with maximum efficiency.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid combines an innovative vehicle concept with cutting-edge drivetrain technology to provide a truly unique driving experience. The enhancement of both dynamic performance and efficiency gives BMW's Sports Activity Coupe additional appeal. BMW ActiveHybrid technology helps to achieve a high level of efficiency in this versatile model.

From outside the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid differs from the conventional-drivetrain models in only a few details. With its elegant and dynamically flowing roofline and features typical of a BMW, the Sports Activity Coupe offers a uniquely sporting rendition of this very special vehicle with its unprecedented character, now as a full hybrid variant.

The "powerdome" hood distinguishes the vehicle from outside, "ActiveHybrid" model designations on the tailgate trim bar and the front doors as well as Bluewater Metallic paint offered for the first time on a BMW X6. - BMW 7 ActiveHybrid (2010)

BMW 7 ActiveHybrid
On the heels of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, BMW announced the production version of the all-new BMW 7 ActiveHybrid, which will also premiere at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show (IAA). The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid will reach America shores in Spring, 2010. Based on the newest BMW 7-Series, this unique car sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

This symbiosis of an upgraded twin-turbo, High Precision Direct Injection, V8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous elec tric motor gives the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid a combined output of 455 hp and maximum torque of 516 lb-ft (preliminary figures). Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for use in this automobile.

Precisely controlled interaction of both power sources serves to maximize the efficiency and dynamic performance of the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid. The result is a unique driving experience that demonstrates the performance capabilities of modern hybrid technology. The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid accelerates to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (preliminary), while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i. Official EPA ratings will be available closer to the US market launch.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology also provides new features that promote efficiency while preserving comfort. As an example, the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is the first BMW with automatic transmission to feature Auto Start Stop to maximize efficiency by avoiding engine idling when stopped. Another advantage is that the air conditioning and ventilation system remains fully operational when using Auto Start Stop. In this case, power is supplied directly through the 120-volt on-board network powered by the lithium-ion battery.

Special displays in the instrument cluster and the Central Display inform the passengers of the degree of efficiency and the current operating status of the hybrid components. The ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished from the 750i by aerodynamically-tuned ten-spoke 19-inch light-alloy Aero wheels, and model designations on the trunk lid, C-pillars, and on the door cutouts. The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is also available in Bluewater Metallic exterior paintwork.

Like existing BMW 7-Series models, BMW's first luxury sedan with ActiveHybrid technology will enter the market in two body variants. The extended version of BMW 7 ActiveHybrid has a wheelbase increased by 5.5", all of which is devoted to the enhanced comfort of rear-seat passengers. Both models are available with a wide range of options from the portfolio of equipment and accessories offered on the BMW 7-Series, enabling the tailoring of the ActiveHybrid 7 to individual tastes and requirements.

BMW ActiveHybrid: A key element of the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy.
The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid takes an innovative approach to ensure outstanding efficiency in this segment. At the same time this unique sport sedan offers dynamic driving characteristics at a level that one would expect from The Ultimate Driving Machine. BMW ActiveHybrid is an important element within the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy meant to offer technologies able to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions on every new model while enhancing driving performance.

BMW uses hybrid technology because it can make an effective contribution to the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions. As a rule, the savings potential of hybrid technology increases with the power of the combustion engine interacting with the system. In the case of the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid precise coordination of the electric motor and the V8 serves to optimize the efficiency of the combustion engine under all operating conditions.

Intelligent energy management for generation, storage and use of electric power.
The ActiveHybrid concept stores energy in a compact, high-performance lithium-ion battery. The processes of charging the battery, supplying power to the electric motor, and electric ancillaries are managed by a control unit developed specifi cally for the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid.

Energy Regeneration: Electric power captured using no extra fuel.
BMW ActiveHybrid technology uses energy that would be normally converted into heat through the brakes, and therefore wasted in conventional cars. The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the integrated electric motor acts as a generator when coasting or applying the brakes, in order to feed electric power into the battery. Brake Energy Regeneration converts some of the vehicle's kinetic energy into electric power for the on-board network whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator or applies the brakes. On acceleration, electricity is fed back into the on-board network from the lithium-ion battery. This sequence relieves the combustion engine from the task of converting some of its fuel energy into electric current, and thus enables the engine to provide more power directly to the rear wheels. The result is better acceleration even than the 750i, despite the fact that the additional power is obtained in a way that does not require additional consumption of fuel.

When the driver requires only a small amount of brake force, the system uses only the drag of the electric generator (motor). The mechanical brakes are activated only when the driver presses down the brake pedal harder for more stopping power. Dynamic Stability Control controls the balance of electrical and mechanical braking so adeptly that the driver does not even perceive the transition from braking with electric power to braking with the mechanical brake system.

Two interconnected on-board networks for flexible management of energy.
The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid features both a conventional 12-volt on-board network fed by an absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery and an additional battery featuring lithium-ion technology operating at 120-volts. The lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric motor as required and serves to start the engine. Electric power generated by Brake Energy Regeneration is fed into both on-board networks. The air conditioner compressor on BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is integrated in the 120-volt network. All other electrically operated functions of the car are supplied by the 12-volt network. The two on-board networks are connected by a voltage converter featuring flexible energy management. Both batteries are charged and maintained through Brake Energy Regeneration. The 12-volt battery is fed with energy from the high-voltage network.

Cutting-edge battery technology: lithium-ion with superior capacity and multi-cycle operating strength.
BMW found that lithium-ion battery technology offers sufficient energy storage capability while taking up minimal space. The result is that the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid gives up almost no luggage capacity to its conventional siblings (750i and 750Li), because the 120-volt battery is small enough to be mounted underneath the trunk floor. Furthermore, the weight penalty incurred by this battery is minimal, meaning less energy is consumed to carry it. Using this technology enables the ActiveHybrid 7 to maximize storage capacity and acceleration in the hybrid luxury sedan segment. It is the fastest-accelerating hybrid sedan in the world.

The useful energy provided by this high-performance battery is 400 watt-hours. The battery itself is comprised of 35 cells and an integrated control unit which continuously analyzes the charge level and ensures appropriate dependability under all conditions. Despite its high level of performance, the lithium-ion battery measures just 14.6 x 8.7 x 9.1 inches (37 x 22 x 23 centimeters) and weighs a mere 59.5 lb or 27 kg.

Hence, it is only slightly larger than a conventional car battery and is housed conveniently in the trunk floor between the wheel arches of BMW 7 ActiveHybrid, safely surrounded by a high-strength special casing. This location provides protection for the battery and helps to preserve the 7-Series' ideal 50-50 weight distribution. The luggage compartment with its capacity of approximately 13 cu. ft. offers adequate space for four 46-inch golf bags.

Twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine with High Precision Direct Injection.
The combustion engine is the innovative reverse-flow V8 introduced in the BMW X6. The world's first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders develops power throughout the entire engine speed range. The spontaneous and direct response of this engine results from its compact configuration, which allows the shortest exhaust manifolds.

Displacing 4.4 liters, this outstanding engine delivers its maximum output of 440 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. Peak torque of 475 lb-ft is maintained from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm, with High Precision Direct Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times. Piezo-injectors positioned in the combustion chambers between the valves ensure a smooth, efficient and clean combustion process. The engine fulfils the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II standards in the US.

Compared with the engine featured in the BMW 750i/Li, this version has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid. There is no starter, alternator, or belt drive for the air-conditioning compressor and hydraulic pump. The cooling system has been modified for hybrid operation. The result is remarkable power from idle. The response of the engine is enhanced by the electric motor with its additional torque. The direct response to the accelerator pedal is impressive when compared either with conventional 7-Series models or existing hybrid vehicles already in the market. Acceleration to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (preliminary) ranks it among the fastest and most thoroughbred sports cars in the world. Top speed of BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is electronically limited to 150 mph.

Electric motor starting and supporting one of the most advanced V8s.
The three-phase synchronous electric motor featured in BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is positioned between the engine and the torque converter, and is connected to the crankshaft. Shaped like a disc, the electric motor weighs 50.7 lb (23 kg). Its compact design ensures full integration in the transmission housing.

The electric motor generates boost of approximately 20 hp and peak torque of 155 lb-ft. When operating as a generator in Brake Energy Regeneration, the electric motor produces approximately 27 hp of brake force.

In total, the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid features a maximum system output of 455 hp and peak torque of 516 lb-ft (preliminary). Normally, this level of power output would require a correspondingly high increase in fuel consumption. The BMW 7 ActiveHybrid, in contrast, combines its power with an equally impressive increase in fuel efficiency of about 15%.

8-speed automatic transmission in combination with Auto Start Stop.
To transmit the drive power developed jointly by the V8 and the electric motor, the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid features a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission specifically tailored to the demands of hybrid technology. This high-tech transmission combines shift comfort, sportiness and efficiency at unprecedented levels.

The new 8-speed close-ratio automatic transmission uses an inno vative gear-set configuration providing two additional gears and a larger overall gear range than the 6-speed automatic transmission used by BMW without negative effects on size, weight, or internal efficiency. With the new transmission, the V8 engine is better able to stay in the power peak while ensuring greater overall efficiency.

Overall efficiency is further enhanced with the Auto Start Stop function. Auto Start Stop automatically switches off the combustion engine at idle, eliminating fuel consumption when stopped. Once the driver's foot comes off the brake pedal, the engine restarts instantaneously.

Starting of the V8 engine is accomplished by the electric motor, which is supplied with power from the high-voltage battery. This enables the engine to start extremely quickly and without any vibration. The automatic transmission is maintained in a "ready-to-drive" mode by a new hydraulic pressure accumulator for the valve body of the transmission. Additionally, the engine control unit "remembers" engine crank position and uses delay-free ignition to restart the engine in less than one crank rotation. The engine is also switched off when the driver uses the Auto Hold function. The driver just has to slightly press down on the gas pedal in order to reactivate the engine.

Continuous climate control in all circumstances.
The climate control system in the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is supplied with power directly from the high-voltage battery, thus ensuring all the usual functionality regardless of whether the engine is running.

Hence, operation of Auto Start Stop does not compromise the infotainment or climate system operation. The desired interior temperatures are maintained consistently, regardless of how frequently or for how long the engine shuts off.

The standard 4-zone automatic climate control has a parked-vehicle function activated whenever desired by remote control. This feature serves to cool down the interior in hot weather before getting into in the car. The highly efficient air conditioning system can reduce in interior tem perature quickly and efficiently by more than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, providing pleasant starting conditions in an appropriately cool and pleasant passenger compartment. By running on pure electric power, the air conditioner compressor begins cooling the car more quickly than in a conventional system.

Efficiency made visible: special display concept.
Featuring Black Panel technology, the instrument cluster in the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is supplemented by an energy flow display in the lower section of the tachometer, a blue arrow shows the current status of Brake Energy Regeneration. When accelerating, an additional graphic display illustrates the boost effect generated by the electric motor.

Using the iDrive control system in the Central Display, the driver is able to see a detailed view of the interaction between the V8 engine and electric motor. Beyond the current charge level of the lithium-ion battery, this display also shows the real-time flow of energy. As an alternative to this graphic display, the system can analyze the current efficiency. In this case a bar graph, which is updated every minute, shows the efficiency levels achieved by the hybrid components during the last fifteen minutes.

Cutting-edge suspension technology for maximum control and comfort.
When the new BMW 7-Series was introduced in 2009, it set new standards for comfort and driving dynamics. The double-wishbone front suspension and an enhanced Integral-V rear suspension provide the ActiveHybrid 7 with the ride comfort one would expect of a BMW sport-luxury sedan with the handling and control of a sports car.

The long-wheelbase version of BMW 7 ActiveHybrid includes self-leveling rear suspension. Both models are fitted with BMW's vehicle speed-variable Servotronic power steering as well as Driving Dynamics Control. The driver is able to choose the preferred shock absorber setting, the appropriate operation of Dynamic Stability Control, the shift character of the automatic transmission, as well as the throttle response and Servotronic steering assist.

The brake system on the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid provides excellent stopping power in every situation. Inner-vented discs and floating calipers front and rear guarantee resistance to fade. The ActiveHybrid 7 comes standard with 19-inch light-alloy rims in an aerodynamically optimized ten-spoke Aero turbine wheel design, unique to this model. Likewise, runflat tires measuring 245/45 R19 front and 275/40 R19 rear enable the driver to continue even after a complete loss of pressure at a speed of up to 50 mph for up to 150 miles. As an added measure of security, the Tire Pressure Monitor will warn the driver if ever the pressure in any of the tires drops more than 20 percent.

ActiveHybrid safety systems.
The safety concept for the car's hybrid components is comprehensive. All components in the high-voltage system feature full insulation and special plug connectors. The lithium-ion battery is protected by a high-strength steel housing and is positioned between the wheel wells in the luggage compartment, and has already been subjected to a wide range of crash tests. Last but not least, the entire high-voltage system is automatically switched off within a fraction of a second in case of a malfunction or collision.

Best of Hybrid: flexible development for optimized concepts on each model.
The hybrid components featured in BMW 7 ActiveHybrid were developed jointly by BMW and Daimler in a cooperation project seeking to develop and test components for hybrid drive in luxury performance cars. Apart from the electric motor and the lithium-ion battery, this joint venture also served to develop the power electronics for the high-voltage network featured in the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid.

Each manufacturer subsequently integrated the hybrid components into the respective model in accordance with individual, brand-specific requirements. One of the unique characteristics of the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is exemplified by the combination of an electric motor with a V8 engine.

BMW ActiveHybrid is based on a modular principle which, following the Best of Hybrid strategy, ensures perfect integration of the optimum component in vari ous vehicle concepts. Hence, the mild hybrid concept of the BMW 7 ActiveHybrid is tailored ideally to the specific requirements of this model as is the full hybrid concept for BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, which will arrive at BMW Centers in late 2009.
