Electric Delivery Van Goes 600 Miles on a Single Charge

Most electric vehicles don't go quite as far on a single charge as a standard car goes on a tank of gas, yet - but that's changing fast! New EV range records seem to be set every week, and a small start-up company from Bochum just upped the range ante again.

BEA-tricks, spearheaded by engineer Daniel Sperling, modified a Citroen Berlingo with 10 of the same lithium ion batteries used in the SmartForTwo (total output: 180 kWh), and drove it 621 miles (1000 km) from Flensburg to Munich.

The little delivery van left a public eco-charge station in Flensburg and drove directly to the eCarTec in Munich, accompanied by an escort vehicle, with two drivers switching back and forth throughout the exhausting trip, which saw the van driving on country roads, highways, and the high-speed Autobahn. The modified delivery van reached Munich at the start of the eCarTec trade fair after a 17 hour trip, safely and without incident.

"We still had charge remaining," said Sperling proudly. "We could have gone another hundred miles, no problem." The remaining charge was perhaps due to a higher average speed than expected - between 30 and 50 miles per hour for both drivers. The team had calculated a 20 hour drive, and so arrived early. Sperling feels that his record is more relevant to the average consumer than some of the other standing range records, as his vehicle drove on public roads with commercially available batteries rather than with prototype equipment or on closed tracks. He points out that the record-breaking Audi A2 equipped with Kolibri batteries burst into flames two months after its record trip, and that the 1000-mile Schluckspecht-E made its trip on a closed track under ideal conditions.

"We made the drive under real conditions in normal every-day traffic," Sperling said. "We have shown what we can do with our batteries." Data collected from the ground-breaking trip will be used to develop improved battery technology for the SmartForTwo.

2012 BMW M3 Coupe Competition Edition Limited to 40 Units for the U.S.

In 1972, BMW founded its M division, which quickly became one of the most successful sub-brands in the automotive world.Today, in celebration of BMW M's upcoming 40th anniversary, the Bavarian company announced the launch of a limited run version of the M3 Coupe called the Competition Edition.

Production for the United States will be limited to 40 identically-equipped cars, each carrying an MSRP of US$81,060 including destination and handling, which is more than US$21,000 over the price of the standard M3 Coupe.

So what does 20 grand get you? Well, not as much as you'd think if you're unaware of how BMW defines "special edition".

All cars are finished in a BMW Individual Frozen Silver Metallic exterior paint with a deep metallic luster, while the exterior treatment also includes black hood intakes and dark chrome exterior trim for the kidney grills, the M side gills and the exhaust tips, plus black GTS alloy wheels.

Inside, the Competition Edition adds black Extended Novillo Leather with palladium silver accents and stitching on front seats, headrests, door trim panels and handles, center console, and center armrest, along with an Alcantara-covered steering wheel with an M3 Checkered Flag logo inlay that is also featured on the door sills.

The genuine Carbon Fiber trims the dash and center console round out the upgrades in the cabin.

Under the sheet metal, the standard Competition Package reduces vehicle ride height by 10mm and includes M3 GTS 19-inch wheels with wider offset for enhanced stability, a modified Electronic Damping Control, and higher-threshold programming for the M Dynamic Mode.

Power continues to come from the standard car's 4.0-liter, 414-horsepower V8 engine linked to a double clutch transmission (M DCT) which allows the M3 Coupe to complete the 0-60mph [96km/h] acceleration in 4.5 seconds.

Dodge Unveils 2012 Challenger and Charger SRT8 Special Editions

Dodge is bringing two special edition models to the LA Auto Show next week, the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee and the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket.

The Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee is powered by the new 470-hp 6.4L Hemi V8 and is available in either Stinger Yellow or Pitch Black with Super Bee graphics. "The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee is a salute to the fun-loving past of Dodge muscle cars powered by the legendary 392 HEMI V-8 in a back-to-basics performance machine," Ralph Gilles, President and CEO - SRT and Motorsports said.

The interior features an SRT steering wheel, Z-stripe cloth performance seats with yellow and silver striping and embroidered Super Bee logos on the front seat headrests. The exterior gets satin black hood graphics and a standard rear decklid spoiler. The Charger SRT8 Super Bee also rides on 20-inch wheels with black painted pockets.

The 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket comes exclusively in Stinger Yellow with a black grille to match the black body-side stripes. It rides on 20-inch wheels. Inside it gets standard leather seats with a Stinger Yellow accent band.

"The Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket adds another piece of performance car nostalgia to our rear-drive muscle coupe lineup in 2012," said Gilles. "The Stinger Yellow paint and interior accents speak directly to the performance enthusiast who appreciates a memorable and collectible color that helps deliver even more excitement and exclusivity."

Both the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee and the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

Nissan Debuts the NV3500 HD Passenger Van

The full-size van is pretty much non-existant thanks to the more popular minivan, but Nissan has just announced the introduction of the NV3500 HD full-size van.

The NV3500 HD is based on the NV commercial van, but features four rows of seats and seats up to 12 passengers. The NV3500 HD can be powered by either a 261 horsepower 4.0L V6 or a 317 horsepower V8. The NV3500 HD features a fully boxed ladder frame and a 28-gallon fuel tank.

"The Nissan NV3500 HD's styling is professional and rugged outside, and completely passenger-focused inside," said Joe Castelli, vice president, Commercial Vehicles and Fleet, Nissan North America, Inc. 2012 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible confirmed for Los Angeles Auto Show

The Jaguar XKR-S Convertible will make its international debut at next week's 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The XKR-S Convertible will join the XKR-S Coupe at the pinnacle of the British luxury brand's sports car range. The XKR-S is the fastest and most powerful production Jaguar ever created.

The 405kW/680Nm supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine from the Coupe will find its way under the long bonnet of the Convertible. Although it will be heavier than the Coupe, the XKR-S Convertible should still sprint from 0-100km/h in well below five seconds (the hardtop does it in 4.4 seconds).

Whether the XKR-S ragtop will be able to match the Coupe's 300km/h top speed is unknown at this stage. The full details are expected to be revealed next week.

Jaguar Australia is not commenting on its plans for the XKR-S Convertible until the LA Auto Show, although we're hopeful the soft-top supercar will follow in the Coupe's footsteps and make its way Down Under sometime in 2012.

If the XKR-S Convertible does go on sale in Australia, it will be priced above the $340,000 Coupe. It's likely to be somewhere in the region of $370,000, putting it in the same league as the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Audi R8 Spyder, Maserati GranCabrio and the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

Golden Steering Wheel Awards Won By Mercedes M Class and SLK

Mercedes have won many awards for its different vehicles, but the company has had so much success in the Golden Steering Wheel awards, that in fact, the company has been in the all-time winners' list. The three star brand has won a total of 21 times.

This year, Europe votes the SLK and the M-Class as the best in their categories after more than 260,000 readers of Auto Bild, Bild Am Sonntag and other European publications chose the vehicles.

The awards were received by the Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler, Dr. Dieter Zetsche and Board of Managament Member of Daimler, Professor Dr. Thomas Weber. The awards night happened in Berlin.

Steel Drake, a designer from Kyrgyzstan made this design called the Mercedes-Benz SF1. Although there's not a word about it being officially a concept car from the company, this design is quite interesting, with very sharp lines and rear engine, it is said to be of Italian origin.

Jaguar preparing for a future without V8 engines - report

Company is keeping their options open

Increasing fuel economy and emission standards has forced Jaguar to consider a future without V8 engines.

Speaking with Drive, Jaguar global product marketing director Steven de Ploey said the company is not "wedded to V8s" and can survive without them. Jaguar doesn't have any plans to phase out V8 engines but de Ploey said "When we have the technology that delivers intelligent performance at the same level" they will consider it. He went on to say "Some of the stuff we have already exploited to the extreme in the C-X75 is the kind of thinking for us and is an essential test bed to see how we could evolve from today to something that is sustainable in the future."

Drastic changes are likely several years off but de Ploey said the company will embrace "intelligent performance" regardless if it is delivered through superchargers, turbochargers or some form of electrification.

Nissan Patrol sets a new Guinness World Record for towing an aircraft [video]

Nissan has set a new Guinness World Record for towing the heaviest airplane with a production car.

Using a Patrol, a driver was able to pull a 170.9 ton (155,038 kg) cargo plane 50 meters (164 feet) at the Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. While the Patrol was completely stock, it needed a specially-made hitch to tow the massive aircraft.

As a refresher, the Patrol is powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine that develops 400 bhp (298 kW) and 560 Nm (412 lb-ft) of torque. It connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission and an ALL MODE 4x4 system that allows the driver to easily change between four drive modes: sand, on-road, snow and rock.

Ford has announced plans to introduce an all-new concept at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin on September 6th.

The company declined to release pictures but said the concept will have "breakthrough technology features." That's pretty vague but Ford CEO Alan Mulally will be making a keynote address where he will discuss how technology can make driving safer, easier and more connected. This implies the concept will incorporate a number of high-tech infotainment and safety systems.

Besides unveiling the concept, Ford will make several "technology announcements" and provide an update on the European launch of Ford SYNC with AppLink.

2014 Lexus GX unveiled [video]

Goes on sale next month

Lexus has officially unveiled the 2014 GX, following a leak earlier this week.

Looking instantly recognizable, the facelifted model is distinguished by a new front fascia with a prominent spindle grille. The model also gains LED-infused headlights, restyled taillights and a new rear bumper.

Interior changes are limited but include updated trim and a new infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen display. There's also a new Premium Package which adds perforated leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a tri-zone climate control system, Intuitive Parking Assist and GPS navigation.

If that's not impressive enough, the range-topping GX Luxury has an adaptable air suspension, Intuitive Parking Assist and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The model also has GPS navigation and 18-inch alloy wheels with a liquid graphite finish.

Motivation is provided by a 4.6-liter V8 engine that develops 301 bhp (224 kW) and 329 lb-ft (445 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to a full-time four-wheel drive system with a limited-slip torque-sensing center differential. This setup enables the model to return an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city / 20 mpg highway (US).

The 2014 Lexus GX will be priced from $49,085 when it arrives at dealerships in September.

The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid are the first-ever hybrid models launched by Land Rover, which will deliver outstanding fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Deliveries will start in early 2014 of this premium diesel SUV hybrids.

To prove its capability, three Range Rover Hybrids will embark an epic trip from Solihull to Mumbai, India. This 'Silk Trail 2013' 16,000km expedition visits 12 countries and takes in some of the world's most challenging roads including part of the ancient, 4,000 mile Silk Road connecting Asia with the Mediterranean. These are the first hybrids to ever attempt this challenging route.

The output of the 3-litre SDV6 diesel engine and 35kW electric motor is 340PS at 4,000rpm and a class-leading 700Nm torque between 1,500-3,000rpm, resulting in stunning SDV8-style performance. Both models accelerate to 62mph (100km/h) in under seven seconds with a top speed of 135mph (218km/h), combined with a 26 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions to 169g/km, equivalent to 44.1mpg on the combined cycle.

I think it looks fine. A bit more upscale than the outgoing model, especially inside.
It will do a great job at keeping existing customers. And that's pretty much all they need, the CR-V being so popular already.

Powertain is not really improved,using the familiar 2.4 Liter with 185hp. Which is actually enough for most buyers.

No novelties like a 6 speed auto or glass roof. Five speed and an old fashion sunroof instead.

BMWNA Announces F30 3 Series Pricing

BMW just announced pricing at the LA Auto Show for the highly anticipated F30 3 Series. We're still getting details but for now, here are the important numbers:

• F30 328i / $35,775
• F30 335i / $43,275

That's $1,175 more for the 2012 328i versus the six cylinder E90 version while the F30 335i is $1,225 more than the out going E90 version. BMW says the price difference can be attributed to a number of options that are now standard (biggest of which is the 8-speed auto) and a number of expensive new features such as break regeneration and auto stop-start.

Nissan Juke Nismo Concept to debut at Tokyo Motor Show

Joining the Nissan Juke-R at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show will be the brand's new Juke Nismo Concept, "an idea of how a premium sports version of the hugely successful compact crossover could look."

The Nissan Juke Nismo Concept has a lower, wider and tougher stance than the standard car and is aimed at gathering an opinion from enthusiasts interested in an edgy personality.

"The global sales success of Nissan Juke has proved beyond doubt that customers are looking for something different," said Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. "The Juke Nismo Concept takes that idea to the next level. It's energetic, distinctive and highly desirable."

The Juke Nismo Concept makes its debut in a pearl white exterior with red highlights and features a lower bumper at the front and rear, wider fenders and sill side skirts. The grille pattern has been redesigned along with the tailgate spoiler. The concept rides on 19-inch alloy wheels.

Saleen teases new model, could be the already confirmed supercar

Could be an S7 successor

Reborn Saleen Automotive has announced plans to unveil a new model at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The public reveal will occur on Saturday at 12 PM PST and chances are the model in question will be the already confirmed supercar. It will probably be a successor to the S7 Twin Turbo and could be an evolution of the S5S Raptor Concept which was envisioned as a replacement for the S7. The concept had a V8 5.0-liter supercharged engine outputting 650 bhp (485 kW) and 630 lb-ft (853 Nm) of torque.

The S5S never made it as a production model because Saleen had some problems after Steve Saleen decided to leave in order to establish a new company. The good news is he has returned and is ready to put Saleen back on the supercar map.

Takes cues from M1 Homage

A BimmerPost forum member managed to take a few photos of a production BMW i8 scale model, ahead of the car's public debut scheduled for September at IAA.

After seeing these photos we realized BMW took a lot of the styling cues from the 2008 M1 Homage. The production-ready i8 will feature the company's traditional Hofmeister kink and dare we say will look better in this monochromatic finish compared to the black/silver paint with blue accents seen on the concept.

The production version will make use of a 3-cylinder, 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine generating 231 HP (170 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. It will be backed by an electric motor providing an additional 131 HP (96 kW) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm). The conventional engine is going to power the rear axle while the electric motor will drive the front wheels.

These two powertrains can run independently or at the same time for a combined output of 362 HP (266 kW) and 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of torque. In this configuration, the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid supercar will need less than 4.5 seconds from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) and will be able to hit an electronically-capped top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

Inexperienced rally driver terrorizes co-pilot with his 'skills' [video]

"Concentrate Samir please!"

This has got to be the funniest on-board video from a rally event we ever had the pleasure of watching.

The footage was recorded during the 2013 Rally of Coimbatore which is part of the Indian National Rally Championship. Driving the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 10 is Samir Thapar with assistance from co-pilot Vivek Ponnusamy.

As you can see from this video, the co-pilot is terrorized by Samir's lack of driving skills and/or his poor abilities of listening to the indications. At the 1:09 point you can hear the co-pilot screaming "medium left" for a couple of times but this doesn't stop Samir from going off-road and almost hitting one of the bystanders.

While the co-pilot is nearly having a heart attack, Samir Thapar appears to be very calm judging by his voice. One of the funniest moments is at the 3:47 mark when Samir says "shut up, don't tell me how to drive."

2016 BMW 7-series spied in Germany [video]

Reportedly codenamed the G11

The 2016 BMW 7-Series has been spied undergoing testing in Germany.

Set to tackle the redesigned Mercedes S-Class, the next-generation model is heavily camouflaged but it appears to have similar dimensions to the outgoing model. Nothing is official but the previous reports have indicated the car could measure approximately 5010mm long, 1815mm wide and 1425mm tall.

Under the hood, we can expect an assortment of familiar engines.  There could also be a plug-in hybrid variant as well as an M770i xDrive that could use a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 enigne that produces approximately 475 hp (354 kW) and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque.

Regardless of what powers the model, the next-generation 7-Series is expected to be significantly lighter than its predecessor as the model is expected to ride on a lightweight structure that uses steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. If previous reports pan out, the model could drop as much as 450 lbs (204 kg).

Fiat 500 Cattiva

In Italian "cattiva" refers to a naughty yet cool person. In English "Cattiva" refers to the newest addition to the Fiat 500 lineup that the automaker will launch at the Concorso Italiano, which takes place August 16th at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey, California. Buyers can choose to base this new model on either Sport or Turbo variant of the Fiat 500, and it will make its way to dealers in the fourth quarter of 2013.

The new 500 Cattiva draws its inspiration from the Fiat 500 "Cattiva" Concept that the automaker unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. Fiat bills it as adding "more excitement and tuned style to the 2013 Fiat 500 Sport."

The model features a more aggressive exterior look, with plenty of black-out treatments to go around, and a nice amount of pop under the hood, should you choose to go with the Turbo model.

Lamborghini Aventador Liberty Walk by SR Auto Group

Up to this point, there aren't a lot of Lamborghini Avenatador programs that can match wits with what DMC did with its Molto Veloce kit. You can make a case for Mansory, but the Swiss tuner is mostly an outlier in the tuning business.

Now, it looks like SR Auto Group has one that can give DMC Tuning a run for its money. Using the iconic LIberty Walk body kit from Japan, SR Auto Group was able to give the Aventador the kind of sinister aftermarket work that only makes what's already a beastly looking exotic even more intimidating.

The two-tone finish given to the Aventador, courtesy of the LIberty Walk body kit, can't be understated because the complementary shades add even more aggressiveness to the Lambo supercar.

With the kit firmly placed, SR Auto Group added the final touches to an impressive body kit, dressing up the Italian supercar with its own brand of wheels, emphatically giving the Aventador a mesmerizing look that's almost impossible to ignore.

Under the hood, SR Auto Group figured what Lambo did was good enough and left the 690-horsepower V-12 alone. This means it retains the base 2.9-second sprint to 60 mph and 217 mph top speed.
