Volkswagen eyeing five-year life cycles - report

Volkswagen eyeing five-year life cycles - report

2015 Volkswagen Jetta facelift [14th Apr, 2014]

Facelifts would come every three years

Volkswagen Group of America CEO Michael Horn has revealed his desire to speed up the introduction of new and facelifted models.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Horn said redesigned models would be launched everything five years and they would be given a facelift after three years. This is significantly faster than the current system which sees new models introduced after seven years and facelifts after four years.

According to Horn, "We’re working to shorten the life cycle of the products to bring more new features and design elements, in terms of facelifts, to the market quicker." He went on to say the plan makes sense and could help to improve sales.

While Horn is upbeat, the shorter lifecycles haven't been approved by the company's board as of yet. Even if executives sign off on the plan, nothing would go into effect until 2017 at the earliest.
