SAAB officially back on the map, 9-3 production in Sweden to resume on Monday

SAAB has announced on Monday production of the 9-3 sedan will be resumed at the Trollhättan assembly plant in Sweden.

It was April 6, 2011 when SAAB closed up shop and then on December 19 they filed for bankruptcy while being under the control of Spyker. Fast forward to September, 2013, SAAB started to roll off pre-production 9-3s and now they have announced regular production series will commence on Monday.

This information has been confirmed by NEVS spokesman Mikael Oestlund who said "yes, we will start the actual production on Monday." As a reminder, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) - owned by a Chinese renewable energy investor - purchased SAAB out of bankruptcy back in June, 2012.

Details about the car are scarce at the moment, but Oestlund said it will be very similar to the 2011MY 9-3 and will be offered with a turbocharged gasoline engine. For 2014 they plan a facelift and a China-only electric version. The 9-3 will be sold initially in Europe and China, but United States could get the car later on.
