ABOUT
JAGUAR

Jaguar Cars is a British automobile manufacturer. Founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company by William Lyons, it was renamed Jaguar in 1935. The company is owned by the Ford Motor Company. Jaguar is known for its luxury saloons and sports cars, market segments it has been in since the 1930s.

The company was independent until it became part of the nationally-owned British Motor Corporation in 1966.

In 1984 it was floated as a separate company on the stock market -- one of the Thatcher government's many privatizations -- only to be taken over by Ford in 1989-1990. In 1999 it was made part of Ford's new Premier Automotive Group along with Aston Martin, Land Rover, Volvo and Lincoln.

The company was originally located in Blackpool but re-located to Coventry to be at the heart of the British motor industry. Today factories are at Browns Lane in Coventry, Castle Bromwich in Birmingham and Halewood in Liverpool.

Jaguar owns the Daimler car company (not to be confused with Daimler-Benz), which it bought in 1960. Daimler is now little more than a brand name for Jaguar's most luxurious saloons.

Of the saloons, the most significant is the XJ6 (1968-1992), still the definitive Jaguar car for many. Since then the XJ6 has had major new models in 1986 (overlapping with the old model for several years), 1994 and 2002. The drive to bring in smaller, more popular models has been met by the smaller S-Type (1999- ) and the smaller still X-Type (2001- ).

There have been several significant sports cars: the XK120 (1948-1954), E-Type (1961-1975), the XJS (1975-1996), and XK8 (1996- ) are the main post-war models. JaguarSport: XJ220 (1988) and the racing XJR15.

- JAGUAR S-Type (2008)

JAGUAR S-Type
The 2008 Jaguar S-Type is the British brand's mid-size sedan, with a design that still stands out in its class but dates nearly 10 years. Less than a year before the 2008 Jaguar S-Type is replaced by the 2009 Jaguar XF (which arrives at dealerships in early spring of 2008), it gets a very subtle makeover and some upgraded features.

Jaguar says all S-Types for the 2008 model year wear an updated front end. The look keeps the elegant grille and quad-oval headlamps, but incorporates the 2008 Jaguar S-Type R's bumper on all models, along with its mesh grille. A range of new wheels give the S-Type more flair, starting with 17-inchers and working up to 19-inchers on the R version.

The S-Type's interior hasn't aged quite as gracefully as the exterior; its dashboard design uses materials that look conservative and somewhat dull by today's standards. The seating of the 2008 Jaguar S-Type also feels rather low and tight for all occupants, with the wide center console occupying much of the space in front. Also, the backseat lacks both legroom and headroom; it's not large enough for most adults. In addition, trunk space is disappointingly small, likely due to the tapered trunk line, although there's a ski pass-through.

Base S-Types come standard, as before, with a 235-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine, and either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. A 300-horsepower, 4.2-liter V-8 is the step-up option, available only with the automatic, and the high-performance R model continues with a supercharged version of the 4.2-liter V-8 delivering 400 horsepower. The R also gets the six-speed automatic transmission, upgraded Brembo four-wheel disc brakes, 18-inch rims (with 19-inch rims available), and Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension system. All 2008 Jaguar S-Type models have rear-wheel drive.

Each of the S-Type models offer satisfying performance, but the S-Type R has an attractive mix of elegant, under-the-radar looks and jaw-dropping performance. One of the S-Type's strengths is its well-tuned suspension, which manages to soak up most bumps and rough surfaces expertly, yet stay reasonably tight to enable responsive handling, with a surprisingly good, communicative steering feel. The interior is generally quiet. However, with the sporty 2008 Jaguar S-Type R's stiffer suspension, there's a fair amount of road noise.

For 2008, the S-Type gets new seats, a leather steering wheel is standard, and satin-mahogany wood trim is optional across the lineup. Rear Park Assist is also among the standard features. Options on the 2008 Jaguar S-Type include electrically adjustable pedals, Front Park Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert.

All 2008 Jaguar S-Type models have standard front side and side-curtain airbags, as well as electronic stability control. The S-Type has been tested by the federal government in side-impact protection only, where it received a mix of four- and five-star scores.

JAGUAR XF (2009)

JAGUAR XF
Considering the XF was only launched in the first half of 2008, it seems a bit premature for Jaguar to embark on costly revisions to its BMW 5-Series-rival. Nonetheless, less than 12 months on, the XF has been upgraded.

Not that you'd notice from the outside: only a pair of new door mirrors gives the game away.

Under the skin it's a different story. Both the old, normally aspirated and supercharged 4.2 V8 and 2.7-litre V6 diesels have been replaced by supercharged and naturally aspirated 5.0-litre petrol engines petrols and a new 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

Available with either 237bhp or a more muscular 271bhp, the new 3.0 engines are a development on the outgoing 2.7. Crucially, not only are the new engines more powerful (up from 204bhp), they're significantly more fuel-efficient, averaging a fine 42mpg and emitting a low 179g/km of CO2.

In the past, opting for a diesel XF meant sacrificing pace, but since the more powerful 3.0D S sprints to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds and onto 155mph it's no longer the case. This engine is our pick of the range.

It's easy to be impressed by the XF. The inside feels a very special place to be thanks to the double-stitched leather, aluminium, wood and high-quality plastics that adorn the cabin.

As a result Jaguar owners are a satisfied bunch, ranking the brand fifth ahead of Mercedes (6th), Audi (7th) and BMW (10th) in the most recent JD Power survey. This is a huge testament to the brand's hard work in improving after-sales service.

Reliability is another much-improved area, although some owners have reported glitches with the power steering and electric windows, which could affect the brand's performance in next year's survey.

JAGUAR XKR (2010)

JAGUAR XKR
A good number of the updated Jaguar XKR's supplied action shots show the coupe sideways with a cloud of smoke in pursuit. While this alludes to variety of improvements for the 2010 model year, the most noteworthy must be the new engine -- a 5.0L V-8 with a Roots-type supercharger.

Also on the new XFR, the V-8, with 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque, eclipses the previous-gen 4.2L by 90 hp. Jaguar increases its performance claims as a result, dropping the 0-to-60-mph acceleration to 4.6 sec from 4.9 sec. A loss of one mpg in highway fuel economy is the only downside to the newfound power; the 2010 XKR returns 15/22 city/highway mpg.

Above the new engine are two louvers, opposed to the center bulge in the hood. Jaguar revises the rest of the bodywork to reflect the "R" designation a bit more thoroughly as well. The 2010 model receives a new front bumper, featuring adjusted air inlets and chrome trimmings, while the truck gains a subtle spoiler and LED taillights. Jaguar sprinkles more LED lighting around the rest of the exterior, from the side markings to the twin reverse lamps to the foglamps. Where the vehicle connects to the ground, 19-in., 10-spoke wheels are standard while 20-in. wheels remain an option.

Jaguar updates the interior as well, matching it to the quality and style found in the XF. Standard on the XK are heated, 10-way-adjustable front seats, and a touch-screen control center. The center contains audio, navigation, Bluetooth, and climate systems. An optional R Performance interior package offers 16-way-adjustable seats with side bolsters and cooling capability.

The "JaguarDrive Selector" -- the much-ballyhooed silver shift dial that rises out of the center console in the XF -- makes an appearance for the first time in the 2010 XK lineup. Along with the new shifter come an electronically controlled suspension and differential systems. The former analyzes pitch and roll rates and compensates for them with dampening adjustments, as much as 100 times a second. The latter promises to offer the bonuses of a locking mechanical differential (burnouts, power-on oversteer) without the abruptness, allowing smoother progression across the traction threshold. Unlike a majority of electronic differentials, the one employed by Jaguar does not hamper acts of hooliganism with brake application.

These systems, in conjunction with the DSC, create JaguarDrive Optimization which replaces the Computer Active Technology Suspension found in current-gen cars. The new meta-system offers more vehicle dynamics control options, with settings ranging from normal to sports to winter to the fun everything-off mode.

Other technological features on the new XKR include bi-Xenon headlights with headlamp leveling, sensors to optimize cabin air quality, keyless start, park assist, and optional active cruise control. The XK lineup also offers front, side, and thorax airbags with an active restraint system that monitors seat application to determine the proper amount of airbag deployment in the event of a crash.

The XKR retains its lightweight yet rigid all-aluminum monocoque chassis and comes in coupe or convertible form. And lest we forget, that optional convertible top will open or shut in 18 seconds. So this summer, when the 2010 XKR hits the market, look forward to a nice bit of fresh air in the cabin during all your sideways shenanigans.

DAIHATSU Terios (2007)

DAIHATSU Terios (2007)

Arguably the most stylish small 4x4 on the market, the totally new Daihatsu Terios has a dynamic, fun-to-drive appearance with strong off-road styling cues yet short front and rear overhangs, a long wheelbase and especially wide tracks and body width.

Its roomy, four-door, five-seat body succeeds in being compact yet practical, avoiding the bulk, high fuel consumption and negative image of some 4x4s.

Designed to appeal to young families and older people seeking the traditional 4x4 qualities of visibility, bad-weather traction and versatility, the Daihatsu Terios also offers small car running costs and manoeuvrability.

Its turning circle is a tight 9.8 metres (kerb-to-kerb) for the S and SE and a still hatchback-like 10 metres for the bigger-tyred SX, while the SX body length is between that of the new Renault Clio and larger Megane.

Compared to the previous model, the Daihatsu Terios 1.5 SX is 230 mm longer at 4,075 mm and a significant 190 mm wider at 1,745 mm. It is 45 mm higher but purely because of its standard roof rails. The entry-level 'S' model - which lacks roof rails - is actually 5 mm lower than before.

Greatly boosting the new Terios's tough, stable stance are front and rear tracks measuring 1,450 and 1,480 mm respectively - a massive 145 and 170 mm greater than before. Meanwhile, the wheelbase - at 2,580 mm - grows by 180 mm.

Complementing this are especially large 16 ins wheels for all models with either 215/65R tyres for the entry-level Terios 1.5 S manual and higher-spec SE automatic or beefy 235/60R tyres for the manual SX.

Versatile Interior

The versatile interior offers mid-sized hatchback passenger space with a clever split fold-and-tumble rear seat which liberates a 1,290 mm maximum floor length - long enough to take a mountain bike.

Even with the rear seat in use the 380 litre capacity boot is capable of taking four 45" golf bags, four vertically-stacked mid-sized suitcases or a typical baby buggy. Most models also have load-floor securing hooks.

Sprightly, Efficient Powertrain

Based on the Sirion's 1.3 litre DOHC 16-valve petrol engine, the Daihatsu Terios has a larger 1.5 litre capacity, producing 105 PS at 6,000 rpm and a flexible 103 lb. ft of torque at 4,400 rpm.

Its standard Dynamic Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) enhances low-speed pulling power and high rev throttle response by maximising combustion efficiency. It also boosts fuel economy and lowers exhaust emissions.

The new Terios's engine - with the same 72 mm bore as the 1.3 litre but a longer 91.8 mm stroke - is both lively and flexible, requiring fewer gear-changes to make sprightly progress.

For example, its torque curve is virtually flat between 3,200 and 4,000 rpm - the most frequently used rev-range in normal driving.

Top speed for manual models is almost 100 mph and over 93 mph for the automatic, while the Daihatsu Terios 1.5 S manual records 40.4 mpg on the Extra Urban Cycle and the Terios 1.5 SE automatic not far behind at 39.8 mpg.

The new Terios 1.5 S manual has a low CO2 reading of 186 g/km with the Terios 1.5 SE automatic recording 196 g/km.

In fact, the Daihatsu Terios 1.5 S has the best CO2 reading of any four-door 4x4 - diesel included - and comfortably beats rivals such as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin and Honda HR-V.

The short-throw five-speed manual gearchange is light and slick, while the four-speed automatic is both quick-reacting yet capable of selecting a higher gear during more gentle driving, aiding fuel economy and refinement.

Meanwhile, all new Terios models have a full-time 4WD system with a fixed 50/50 front to rear torque-split and centre differential which eliminates axle wind-up - the phenomenon of the steering becoming increasingly heavy on full-lock.

Because of this 50/50 torque split, high-speed stability and slippery surface traction is greatly enhanced compared to most rivals. These models are usually rear-wheel drive with selectable 4WD or effectively front wheel-drive, only calling on 4WD when sensors detect wheelspin.

A fascia-mounted switch activates the electronically-controlled differential-lock. This further aids traction in mud or deep snow, while short front and rear overhangs and a 190 mm ground clearance also signal serious off-road ability. The new Daihatsu Terios has a front approach angle of 38 degrees with a rear of 37 degrees.

The compact engine is mounted in-line, followed by the gearbox. A centre differential transfers torque to both the front and rear axles via two separate propeller shafts.

Sporty Handling From New Chassis

The new Daihatsu Terios benefits from a totally new monocoque platform with a revised chassis tuned for car-like, confidence-inspiring handling with vastly improved ride and stability compared to the previous model.

Aided by its considerably wider front and rear tracks, the new Terios features front MacPherson struts, lower wishbones and an anti-roll bar.

The five-link rear suspension has variable-rate coil springs and near vertical rear shock-absorbers which improve damping and therefore comfort, pitch and roll.

Compared to the old Terios, the front anti-roll bar is of a new design, the revised hydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering gear achieves excellent accuracy and feel, while the bump stops better control axle articulation.

In addition, an increased shock-absorber rebound stroke improves rough terrain driveability.

At the rear, a new lateral rod reduces axle squirm and benefits refinement, a newly-designed upper control arm enhances stability, a new shock-absorber reduces brake judder and a longer suspension stroke improves ride comfort.

Other rear suspension improvements include a more compact design resulting in a lower boot floor and a new design of spring and lower control arm which reduce rear differential noise.

Outstanding Safety Measures

The Daihatsu Terios has outstanding safety measures with in-house tests giving results equal to a Euro NCAP 4-Star occupant protection and 3-Star pedestrian protection.

Crushable structures are used at the front and rear of the body with the cabin itself made stronger to minimise occupant injury. To protect from side-impacts, the front floor cross-member, tunnel, sills, B-posts and roof-side rails are all strengthened to secure occupant survival space.

As for pedestrians, the front bumper and bonnet are designed to minimise injury to the head and thigh with a shock-absorbing structure built into the bonnet.

High-power seatbelt pretensioners are standard while special pads are installed to reduce injury to occupant knees, torso and lower legs. The pedals are also designed not to intrude during an impact.

Both driver, passenger and side airbags are fitted and the standard four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) also feature electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) which maximises stopping power and minimises skidding.

Outstanding Equipment

Every new Terios model has an outstanding equipment tally with the entry-level Terios 1.5 S featuring air-conditioning, power-steering, ABS with EBD, full-time four-wheel drive with centre diff-lock, driver, passenger and side airbags, three rear-seat three-point seatbelts, radio/CD player, four electric windows and reverse parking sensors.

Expected to be the best-seller, the Daihatsu Terios 1.5 SX adds, for example, alloy wheels with 235/60R tyres, two-tone wheelarch extensions and side-skirts, roof rails, multi-information display, front fog-lamps, smoked 'privacy glass' for the rear side doors and rear window, leather steering wheel, electric windscreen de-icer and door mirrors and various AC sockets and load-restraint ties.

The automatic transmission-only Terios 1.5 SE has a similar equipment level to the SX but features a different design of alloy wheel with 215/65 tyres and has colour-keyed side skirts.

Like all Daihatsus, the new Terios will enjoy the protection of a three-year unlimited mileage warranty with roadside assistance plus an eight-year anti-perforation warranty.
