Datsun Go at Bharat NCAP crash test
Both lack standard airbags
The Datsun Go and Maruti Suzuki Swift have received a zero star rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests.
For those of you who haven't heard of Bharat NCAP, it represents the tenth New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and it was established for the Indian market, the fifth biggest passenger car market in the world. The first two cars crash tested were the Datsun Go and Maruti Suzuki Swift which didn't receive any stars.
The Datsun Go's structure collapsed during the frontal crash test done at 64 km/h (40 mph) and because it lacked a front airbag, the driver's head hit the steering wheel. Talking about the Go, Global NCAP Secretary-General, David Ward said the body structure is so weak that it's futile to add an airbag.
As for the Maruti Suzuki Swift, its structure showed signs of collapsing in the frontal crash test and just like the Go it lacks standard airbags, but at least these are optionally available and will certainly improve occupant protection.
On a related note, Euro NCAP also crash tested a few cars, with the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer, Tesla Model S, Nissan Pulsar and Skoda Fabia all receiving a five-star rating. In addition, the facelifted Renault Megane was retested and its rating was upgraded from three to four stars while the Suzuki Celerio obtained three stars.
