2014 BMW Z4
Could ride on a flexible and lightweight platform
The BMW-Toyota sports car remains shrouded in mystery but a new report is indicating it could spawn the replacements for the BMW Z4 and 6-Series as well as the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S.
According to CAR Magazine, the two companies are developing a flexible platform that can underpin everything from a small two-seat roadster to a larger sports car. BMW could use the architecture to underpin the next-generation Z4 and 6-Series, while Toyota could use it for a new MR2 and Supra.
Executives from both brands have been coy on details but CAR says the model will have a front rear-mounted engine and incorporate carbon composite technology.
Everything sounds rather promising but sources are indicating there is growing friction between the companies. According to insiders, BMW elders weren't thrilled about the i sub-brand and now they worry that the Toyota partnership could further dilute the Ultimate Driving Machine mantra.
