2015 Mazda MX-5 could spawn another rear-wheel drive model - report

According to a recent report, the 2015 Mazda MX-5 could spawn another sports car besides the Fiat / Abarth variant.

Details are limited but Car Advice is reporting the model's SKYACTIV-CHASSIS will likely be used to underpin another rear-wheel drive model in the future. This approach would help the company to spread development costs which is critical for smaller automakers like Mazda.

While northing is official, Car Advice asked Mazda's Representative Director Seita Kanai about the possibility he laughingly said “Too much good question. I can’t answer.”

As we have previously reported, the MX5's SKYACTIV-CHASSIS with feature a variety of lightweight components which will enable the model to weigh 220+ lbs (100+ kg) less than its predecessor. The company has also said the platform will help the MX-5 become a truly "remarkable production car."
