Land Rover Electric Defender research vehicle
Seven units developed
Land Rover will showcase in Geneva an electric version of the Defender set to "go into service in special real world trials".
Seven electrified Defenders have been equipped with an electric motor producing 94 hp (70 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque. The cars also have a 27 kWh lithium-ion battery providing the vehicle with a 50-mile (80 km) range. During low-speed off-road use, the battery can last up to eight hours. A 7 kW fast charger will fill the battery pack in four hours while with a 3 kW charger takes 10 hours.
The Land Rover Electric Defender research vehicles feature a single-speed, 2.7:1 reduction gearbox working together with the car's current four-wheel drive system. Land Rover has also installed an updated version of the Terrain Response System.
The battery weighs 410 kg (903 lbs) and is mounted instead of the diesel engine. Compared to the traditional Defender, this EV version weighs an additional 100 kg (220 lbs) and all components of the electric powertrain are air-cooled.
More details are available in the attached press release.
