McLaren went from being an auto manufacturer that offered one car, the F1, in the 1990a, to having a full-fledged model line up in 2015. As it stands, McLaren has 2 cars for sale: the "entry-level" 650S and the ludicrously fast P1 hypercar. As previously reported, McLaren is going to debut their new mid-engined Sports Series, which will fit below the 650S in terms of price and performance, at the New York Auto Show later this year. Now Autocar is reporting that McLaren is also planning to reveal another carbon-fiber car to bridge the gap between the 650S and the P1: the McLaren 675 LT.
The name for the McLaren 675 LT comes from the fact that the camouflage has many little shapes that resemble the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR "Long Tail" that raced in that year's 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. The prototype that has been caught testing makes it immediately clear that there are some external changes to the design of the 650S. There is a new lower side intake beneath the existing ones on the 650S. Also the rear-end of the car seems to be quite elongated compared to the 650S, giving the "LT" more legitimacy. The "675" is referring to the power output in PS, or 666 hp, that the 3.8L twin turbo V8 will deliver. Reports also suggest that it will be around 100 kg, or 220 lb, less than the 650S, which has a dry weight of 1330 kg, or 2,926 lb.
January of last year, McLaren's chief executive Mike Flewitt confirmed that they were working on a car to bridge the gap between their two cars. At that time, Flewitt referred to the car as project "P15" and said that the target price for the car would be around 400,000, or around $745,000 CAD. This would be a premium of $360,000 over the current 650S.
