Mercedes-Benz introduces more premium and versatile V-Class in Geneva [video]

Taking full-size MPVs upmarket

Mercedes-Benz has gone back to the V-Class moniker and are now showcasing the all-new model in Geneva.

Offering "the best of both worlds", Mercedes-Benz's reinvented V-Class has taken a more passenger-oriented approach and will be replacing the Viano in the lineup. The styling combines cues from the all-new C- and S-Class models along with a hint of the facelifted E-Class. Overall, the German marque has created what could possibly the most stylish van that should broaden the model's customer base.

The interior cabin has been taken upmarket as well thanks to premium trims, high-end leather upholsteries, as well as rear center consoles and individual rear seats. There's also a freestanding COMAND display together with ambient lightning and metallic accents creating a very desirable cabin for a van.

The V-Class was not designed to take down Nürburgring records as Mercedes-Benz focused on making the model as fuel efficient as possible. As a consequence, the 200 CDI base model makes use of a 4-cylinder 2.1-liter turbodiesel engine with 136 HP (100 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft). Opt for the 220 CDI and you will get 163 HP (120 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft). There's also a 250 BlueTec variant rated at 190 HP (140 kW) and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft). The most frugal variant will return 41.2 mpg US (49.5 mpg UK or 5.7 liters / 100 km).

Mercedes-Benz will offer the 2014 V-Class with two equipment lines, three vehicle lengths and two wheelbases, as well as with a wide array of optional equipment. The model is targeting "families with two or more children, active individuals with large piece of sports equipment and operators of luxurious VIP or hotel shuttles."

Production will take place in Vitoria, Spain and sales are programmed to commence towards the end of May.
