Sergio Marchionne still eyeing an expansion?
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has made his love affair with Alfa Romeo a well known fact, but the sweater-vested executive could also be eyeing Opel.
According to Il Sole-24 Ore, Fiat is preparing to buy Opel if GM puts the troubled automaker up for sale. The publication goes on to say "Marchionne's plan is to get Opel practically free, not unlike what happened with Chrysler and not unlike Fiat's offer for Opel in 2009."
Fiat declined to confirmed the reports, but GM Vice Chairman Stephen Girsky issued a statement that said "Opel is a fully integrated part of GM's global footprint and vital for GM's future success in Europe. The GM-PSA alliance is fully on track."
As we have previously reported, Fiat was one of the companies that was interested in buying Opel following GM's bankruptcy. GM eventually announced plans to sell the company to a joint-venture lead by Magna International, before deciding to keep the brand a few months later.
