Tesla launches battery swapping pilot program, will allow owners to get a full battery in 3 minutes

Tesla has announced plans to launch a battery swap pilot program starting next week.

According to the automaker, invited Model S owners will be given the opportunity to swap their car's batteryat a custom-built facility across the street from their Supercharger station in Harris Ranch, California.

Tesla didn't go into specifics but the battery swapping system will apparently be similar to the one they demonstrated last summer.

The company also said the battery swaps will be by appointment only and will cost "slightly less than a full tank of gasoline for a premium sedan." The entire process will take approximately three minutes - due to the new titanium and aluminum battery pack shields - but Tesla believes they can eventually reduce that time to under than a minute.

The pilot program is intended to assess demand and, if it proves popular, it could eventually be rolled out to additional locations.

Volkswagen Golf R launch edition announced for US, goes up for order next month

Volkswagen of America has announced plans to begin accepting the first 500 pre-orders for the 2015 Golf R on January 8th.

The first 500 models will all be identical and feature a Lapiz Blue Metallic exterior with bi-xenon headlights and 19-inch Cadiz-style aluminum wheels with summer performance tires.

The cars will also come equipped with GPS navigation, a Fender audio system, Park Distance Control and a DCC adaptive damping system.

Power will be provided by a 2.0-liter TSI engine that develops 292 bhp (217 kW) and 280 lb-ft (379 Nm) of torque. It will be connected to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system which will enable the hatchback to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The first 500 owners will also receive a special VolkswagenDriver Gear R accessory kit that includes a serialized Volkswagen R watch, a serialized carbon fiber / stainless steel keychain and serialized VIN-specific certificate.

The cars will cost $39,090 - excluding an $820 destination and delivery charge - and reservations can be made with a $500 deposit placed through the VW.com/GolfR website.

Volvo to introduce a cyclist anti-collision warning system at CES [video]

Volvo's obsession with safety continues as the company has teamed up with POC and Ericsson to develop a new two-way communication system for cars and cyclists.

Set to debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the system uses a prototype helmet and a smartphone to communicate a cyclist's position to drivers. If an imminent collision is detected, both the driver and the cyclist will be warned. This will occur even if the cyclist is in a blind spot and the driver can't see them.

According to Volvo's Klas Bendrik, "The partnership between Volvo Cars, POC and Ericsson is an important milestone in investigating the next steps towards Volvo Cars’ vision to build cars that will not crash. But now, by exploring cloud-based safety systems, we are getting ever closer to eliminating the remaining blind spots between cars and cyclists and by that avoid collisions.”

Volvo goes on to say that cycling accidents are more common than most people realize as 726 cyclists were killed in the United States in 2012. Injuries are also a major issue as 4,533 cyclists were injured in Berlin alone in 2012.

Shelby American has introduced the Signature Edition Super Snake.

Set to be offered on 2007-2014 Ford Shelby GT500s, the Signature Edition Super Snake package includes body stripes, badges and forged Weld wheels with Signature Edition center caps.

Interior changes are limited but include a unique plaque and Signature Edition floor mats. There's also a commemorative Carroll Shelby signature on the steering wheel.

Bigger changes occur under the hood, as the 5.8-liter V8 engine has been equipped with a Kenne Bell supercharger that enables it to produce up to 850 hp (634 kW / 862 PS). The car also has a cooling package which adds a new radiator, heat exchanger and aluminum cooling tanks.

Production will be limited to 50 units and pricing starts at $44,995 (excluding the cost of the car).

In a statement, Shelby American CEO Joe Conway said "With production of the current generation GT500 ending, we wanted to commemorate the sunset of an important era. This Shelby truly changed the automotive landscape and inspired the performance competition that continues today. It’s a car worthy of being honored with a very special limited edition Shelby." He added, "The package can only be ordered available for a limited time, so ownership puts a person in a very elite club.”

Ricciardo confirms pay-rise for 2015

Daniel Ricciardo looks set to get a pay-rise after his meteoric first season with Red Bull.

Australia's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reports that while he out-shone the quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel in 2014, he was making "just over $1 million" for the year.

That is many multiples times less than German Vettel's salary.

The newspaper said Ricciardo's fee is now likely to be more than doubled for 2015, with significant bonuses in the offering for race wins and titles.

The 25-year-old confirmed: "Yeah, I should be (paid more). I should get a little bit of a pay rise, so we'll see how much that ends up being."

Despite finishing third behind only the dominant Mercedes in 2014, Ricciardo's salary is dwarfed by many of the top drivers he defeated this year.

But he said: "On average, most of us are earning a pretty good wage but the best thing is if you can make a living out of what you love."

Buemi stays as Red Bull reserve

Sebastien Buemi is staying put as Red Bull's reserve driver.

The 26-year-old has been the team's main test and simulation driver since he was dropped from the junior squad Toro Rosso at the end of 2011.

This year, he became the world endurance sports car champion with his Toyota teammate Anthony Davidson, and he also races in the new Formula E series.

But if Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo or Daniil Kvyat - or perhaps even a Toro Rosso driver - is unable to race during the course of next season, Buemi will remain first in line for the seat.

He told Blick newspaper: "One never wishes anything bad for a colleague. The truth is that I enjoy working in the simulator.

"That's why I have signed up again for another two years," the Swiss newspaper quoted Buemi as saying.

After last month's announcement, Infiniti has released a teaser image for the Q60 concept which will premiere in January at NAIAS.

Infiniti has already said the concept will be "very, very, very, very close to the next Q60" and from this single teaser image we are looking at a sleek and elegant coupe which will fit in terms of dimensions between the BMW 4-Series and 6-Series according to Nissan's premium marque.

It's being described as a "premium sports coupe" and rides on beefy five-spoke alloy wheels while the conventional side mirrors have probably been replaced by cameras. Other noticeable features include automatically retractable door handles and a sloping roofline ending with an elongated rear window.

The Infiniti Q60 concept is going to be introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit set to open its doors for the press on January 12.

Executive Modcar Trendz (EMT) has unveiled a Batmobile replica based on a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The tuners from Mumbai, India have removed the body of an S-Class (unspecified generation) and replaced it with a Batmobile lookalike from Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" (1992). The original Batmobile from that movie was actually based on a Chevrolet Impala chassis and was designed by Anton Furst who created an Art Deco-styled vehicle with terrifying looks.

The tuners from EMT haven't released any technical details but we remind you the real deal is 260.7 inches (6621mm) long, 94.4 inches (2397mm) wide and 51.2 inches (130mm) tall, with a 141-inch (3581mm) wheelbase and rides on 15-inch cast alloy wheels.

You probably know there's a new Batman movie on its way called "Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice" and we have already seen the new Batmobile in a set of very revealing spy shots from back in September. The movie is set to come out in May 2016.

Porsche Exclusive is showcasing their latest project, a Cayman S featuring a Racing Yellow look.

At the beginning of September we saw a tailor made Cayman S Agate Grey prepared through Porsche's customization program and now the team was in charge of applying a Racing Yellow theme on the same model. The car seen here comes with the optional SportDesign package and has received black rear side air intake grilles, side mirror lower trims and lettering, along with satin platinum wheels, smoked taillights and a dual sporty exhaust system.

As for the interior, Porsche Exclusive carried over the exterior's Racing Yellow hue and applied it onto the instrument dials, vents, Sport Chrono stopwatch as well as other bits and pieces to spice up the cabin.

Porsche Exclusive only fiddles with a car's aesthetics so this Cayman S comes with the same flat-six 3.4-liter developing 325 HP (239 kW), enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 4.7 seconds when configured with the optional Sport Chrono package. Top speed stands at 176 mph (283 km/h) with the six-speed manual and at 174 mph (281 km/h) for the PDK-equipped version.

Jeep has announced the 2015 Renegade will be priced from £16,995 OTR in the United Kingdom.

Set to arrive at dealerships in February, the entry-level Renegade Sport features air conditioning, remote central locking and a touchscreen infotainment system. The model also has Bluetooth connectivity, an electric parking brake and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Moving up to the Renegade Longitude adds cruise control, a six-speaker audio system and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The crossover also has fog lights, roof rails and body color mirrors and door handles.

The Renegade Limited goes one step further as it has heated front seats, leather upholstery and privacy glass. Other notable highlights include a Forward Collision Mitigation system, rear parking sensors, a chromed exhaust tip and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

There are a lot of cool cars we're not getting here in the United States for one reason or another, and the 2014 Renault Megane 275 Trophy is one of them. Just like the 2014 Seat Leon SC Cupra 280, the Megane 275 Trophy is an amazingly quick hot hatch and, as of 2014, the fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle around the Nurburgring track. At least the limited-edition Trophy-R is, because the regular production model is a bit heavier and lacks some of the racing goodies that come with the "R" badge. Either way, the 275 Trophy is the race-bred hatch the Volkswagen Golf R isn't, although the German isn't bad either.

While we won't get to drive it unless we travel to Europe, the folks over in mainland Europe or the Great Britain have no trouble in purchasing the 275 Trophy and taking it to the track. For those of you still not convinced of the Trophy's cool factor, there's a brand-new review coming from XCar that you might want to watch. I know French cars have a lousy reputation in the U.S., but this video has what it takes to prove that the Megane 275 Trophy is a Renault like no other; one that we desperately need here in the States.

There's only one downside to it, besides the fact that we can't buy it, of course. Its 38,000 French sticker, which converts to around $47,300 as of 11/28/2014, makes it awfully expensive. For that kind of dough, there are a lot of cool sports cars you can by on this side of the pond. Very few of them benefit from race-bred technology like the 275 Trophy though. Nissan Announces Its Return To Super Bowl

For the first time since 1997, Nissan is joining in on the fun of advertising at the Super Bowl after announcing that it had bought a 60-second spot during Super Bowl XLIX, which is set to air February 1, 2015 on NBC. The automaker announced that the return to major events like the Super Bowl is tied into its "Big Moments" marketing strategy. Considering that the company is right in the middle of its best sales year ever in the US, the timing behind its return to the Super Bowl does make a lot of sense.

The company hasn't announced what kind of commercial it plans to unveil during the game, but multiple reports have tied Nissan's 60-second spot with Los Angeles-based advertising agency TBWA/Chiat/Day.

Nissan's return to the Super Bowl also comes at a time when a handful of auto companies traditionally involved during the game are holding on to their advertising budgets. While Toyota and Mercedes have already bought time slots during the game, Jaguar and Lincoln has announced that it's not getting involved this year after being prominently featured during Super Bowl XLVIII. Even Volkswagen, which has dominated the Super Bowl narrative in the past four years with hit ads like "The Force" is sitting out this year.

The timing of these absences is a boon to Nissan as it seeks to continue the momentum generated by its "Big Moments" campaign. Don't be surprised if its ad focuses on some of its new models, including the 2015 Murano, which is set to be launched later in the year.

What's clear is that Nissan wants to use events like the Super Bowl to promote its new products in one of the biggest television audiences throughout the year. It might have been a while since Nissan last appeared during the Super Bowl, but none of that will matter now that the company has booked its return ticket to the game.

Company says consumers won't pay for the technology

The Head of Global Powertrain Coordination at Fiat-Chrysler has announced the company will not invest in hybrid or electric vehicles until consumers are willing to pay for the technology.

Speaking at a conference in Michigan, Bob Lee said consumers don't value hybrid or electric vehicles enough to pay for the expensive technology that goes along with them. As he explained, "Many customers want to reduce C02 [emissions], but they aren't willing to change their lifestyle or pay the cost - yet."

Instead, the company plans to offer more turbocharged and diesel engines. While diesels engines are about as fuel-efficient as petrol-powered hybrids, Lee says diesels deliver better performance which gives then an edge.

Tesla working on an all-wheel drive Model S - report

The Tesla Model S has quickly become one of the most desirable electric vehicles to ever be produced and a new report is indicating the company is developing an all-wheel variant.

Details are limited, but The Verge is reporting the all-wheel drive model could be launched as early as next year in an "ultra-premium" trim level. The car will apparently be based on the P85 variant and be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds or less. After the initial roll-out, the all-wheel drive system could become optional on less expensive models.

Tesla declined to comment on the report, but the company has already announced plans to offer an optional all-wheel drive system on the Model X crossover. The system uses an electric motor at each axle for improved grip and acceleration.

The X6 gets a little brother

Development work continues on the 2014 BMW X4 as our spies have caught the model undergoing testing for a second time.

Dressed in swirly camouflage, the crossover appears to remain pretty faithful to the concept that debuted at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year. Despite the similarities, the production model is slightly more conservative as it drops the aggressive front bumper and rear underbody protection.

Engine options are expected to carryover from the X3, so choices could include:

• A TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 bhp (179 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque


• A TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 300 bhp (224 kW) and 300 lb-ft (406 Nm) of torque


• A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 184 bhp (135 kW) and 380 (280 lb-ft) of torque

The BMW X4 will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina and could be introduced as early as the 2014 North American International Auto Show.

As if 270 mph and 0-200mph in 14.5 seconds wasn't fast enough - according to Hennessey, the F5 will not only trump the top speed records of the GT but also the acceleration as well. This new breed of hypercar is all about one thing: Speed.

Sticking to the traditional route of power train (as opposed to the hybrids such as the P1 and 918), the F5 will have a twin turbo V8 that could potentially boast up to or exceeding 1400bhp, all the while still remaining under 1300kg. And the best is still yet to come, as it will be available with both a single clutch paddle shift and a traditional manual transmission! Finally, a company that took note of the fact that some people still fancy a good old manual gearbox!

All the specs aside, this car is out to be taken seriously, with its main mission to break its predecessors' records; it seems as if this car is going to be another entry from Hennessey into the pages of Guinness. And for the price it's going to be listed at, frankly it better perform. With the GT starting at $1.2 million, one can only imagine what it's younger brother will be worth, especially considering all of the R&D that went into making this new monster.

Hennessey also claims that due to a new traction control system, the F5 will be able to deliver the same thrill as the GT but with better day-to-day drivability... But really, who are they trying to fool? Someone buying this car for its everyday drivability is like someone purchasing hand soap and then using it to clean their teeth... Yes, it might work, but why would you want to do such a thing?
This new rocket of a car is scheduled to be released in 2015 and made available to customers late 2016, it's safe to say that 2016 is going to be an exciting year!
