Lamborghini Huracan Spyder coming next year, RWD version also planned – report

Lamborghini Huracan Spyder coming next year, RWD version also planned - report

Lamborghini Huracan Spyder rendering / E.Milano

Company boss says "we need lots of derivatives"

Lamborghini’s boss Stephan Winkelmann has revealed the company could soon offer several new variants of the Huracan.

Speaking to Autocar during last weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours event, he said “We need lots of derivatives. Customers expect it and we always need something new to talk about”.

Most likely, first will be a Spyder version, which is expected sometime next year. No details about this car are available yet, but it will probably be nothing more than an open-top version of the standard Huracan with no major design changes.

Next will be a rear-wheel-drive modification. As Winkelmann explains, “we did it with the Gallardo so it might be an option. We are a four-wheel-drive super-sports car (producer) but why should we not do a rear-drive option”.

Autocar says a lighter and more extreme Huracan is also in the cards and could wear the Superleggera moniker.

The BMW 6-series is set to receive its mid-cycle facelift for the 2015 model year and we are able to show you the latest shots of a production prototype after our spies caught one doing its latest round of testing.

The lovely red livery seen here on the coupe version is completed with minimal disguise around the taillights, headlights, front bumper and front three-quarter panels. Evidently, exterior changes will be subtle with a tweaked front bumper and modified lights on both the front and the rear.

The cabin is also expected to receive some minor updates while the engine line-up is set to remain untouched.

Expect to see the official unveiling of the facelifted BMW 6-series in both Coupe and Gran Coupe body styles at the Geneva Motor Show next year.

Jaguar and Bremont Watches Launch Lightweight E-Type Tachometer

Ferrari isn't the only automaker that can get involved in the exclusive luxury watch business. Jaguar wants to get in on the fun and it tapped British watchmaker Bremont to create an ultra-limited edition timepiece in honor of the iconic Lightweight E-Type.

The two British brands actually have a history of collaboration, beginning with the development of the Jaguar C-X75 Concept back in 2010, specifically the analog dashboard clock found in the interior of the 778-horsepower hybrid supercar. Now, the two companies are back at it again with a new partnership that ties into Jaguar's plan to finish the Lightweight E-Type project it started in February 1963.

The watch itself is a thing of beauty. It's got a 43 mm (1.69-inch) white gold case with an aluminum center ring. This ring, it turns out, was made using the same material used int he construction of the Lightweight E-Type. How's that for unique, right? Look inside at the black dial and you'll notice that it was inspired by a Lightweight E-Type tachometer. A subtle "red zone" quadrant is also a prominent feature while at the six o'clock position, a specific car chassis number of the Lightweight E-Type is displayed, just above where it reads 'Automatic' and 'Made in U.K.' Meanwhile, the watch strap is made from Connolly leather, which is the same type of cover Jaguar used on the Lightweight E-Type's upholstery.

Neither Jaguar nor Bremont has mentioned any pricing details for these six watches. What we do know is that they won't come cheap. Not cheap at all.

Video: Chris Harris Reviews The LaFerrari

width="460" height="370" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/h33H91Ipyy4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Chris Harris is back again, making me jealous of his life. He recently spent some time in Maranello, testing the new Ferrari LaFerrari. The LaFerrari, despite having a silly name, is the hardcore, hybrid successor to the famous Enzo. It's also the Italian answer to the Porsche 918 and the McLaren P1. It's also probably the most brutally fast hybrid production car ever made.

Chris got to test each of those aforementioned hybrid supercars and had nothing but great things to say about them. However, he seems to feel a bit different about this LaFerrari. It seems to be the only one of the three he actually loved. The reason for that is probably the fact that the LaFerrari hides it's techno-wonder more than the others. The Porsche 918 is a unashamed nerd-fest (a very cool, very fast nerd-fest), and the McLaren is all business with its very serious, designed-in-a-wind-tunnel looks. The LaFerrari, on the other hand, is typical Italian pantomime and theater, it's a celebration of colors and noise. I personally think it looks fantastic, I especially like the bug-antenna-style wing mirrors. It looks like a proper Ferrari, not just an exercise in aerodynamics and numbers. They each have their own character but the LaFerrari seems to have the most interesting one.

Combine all of this power, performance, handling prowess and looks, and you have possibly the greatest supercar the world has ever seen. Now go watch Mr. Harris give it "the full potatoes!".

McLaren P1 GTR

The P1 debuted in the 2014 model year with its hulking 3.8-liter V-8 and electric motor that produced a mighty 903 horsepower and approximately 1,100 pound-feet of twist. McLaren has already made it clear that there will be plenty of special-edition P1s, and in 2015 the first of these arrives in the form of a track-exclusive P1. In a nod to the McLaren F1 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1995, the track-prepped P1 carries the same GTR moniker.

Besides featuring a host of aerodynamic and technical improvements, which also translate in more horsepower and improved performance, the P1 GTR also marks the introduction of McLaren's full customer racing program. Just like Ferrari and Lamborghini, the Brits are upping the ante toward organizing private racing events on famous Formula One tracks, but not before the buyers receive private consultations with McLaren's racing division.

The supercar has just been unveiled as a production-ready concept car at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Read on to meet McLaren's brand-new and utterly powerful race car.

Next-Generation Chevrolet Corvette Could Feature a Mid-Engine Setup

If you're one of those gearheads who has his fingers crossed for a mid-engined Corvette, then this report will likely keep your hopes up. According to Motor Trend, quoting "multiple sources" around General Motors, the next-generation Corvette will have its V-8 engine mounted behind the seats. What's more, the report suggests a mid-engine Corvette could come as soon as the C7-based ZR1 hits the market.

Just as we pointed out back in June 2014, when Chevy trademarked the "Zora" name, Motor Trend also hints that the said moniker will be used on a mid-engined Corvette. A move that would make sense, given that Zora Duntov himself created a mid-engined Corvette prototype in the early 1960s. Dubbed CERV II, the concept also featured a unique AWD system which, at the time, would've helped GM develop one of the most advanced supercars for the road.

Unfortunately, the CERV II never became more than just a concept and Chevrolet never offered supercar. But that could change in a few years if Motor Trend's report proves to be accurate.

Now we know what some of you might be thinking; shifting the Corvette's engine from the front to the middle would be a huge departure from the 'Vette's 60-year-old legacy. Well, not quite. Motor Trend speculates that Chevy is considering a "Corvette family" for the next-generation, C8 model. Specifically, the lineup could include both a familiar, front-engine sports car and a mid-engine supercar.

Spied BMW 1-Series facelift prototype hides much needed cosmetic changes

Spied BMW 1-Series facelift prototype hides much needed cosmetic changes

2015 BMW 1-Series facelift spy photo / Automedia

Can't come soon enough

The three-door BMW 1-Series facelift has returned in an additional batch of spy photos.

One of the main reasons why BMW's 1-Series model has never been a success in terms of sales has to do with its controversial design as it mixes a rather awkward front with a generic rear. The incoming Life Cycle Impulse aims to fix these weaknesses with an updated front fascia which will likely take cues from the 2-Series. Expect to find a redesigned front grille with reshaped bars while the headlights seem to be more refined.

Some changes at the back are also planned as according to our spy photographers the hatch door appeared to be slightly wider. In addition, the taillights will receive updated graphics and could be pushed a bit to the sides.

On sale since 2011, the second generation BMW 1-Series will probably receive its well-deserved facelift at the beginning of October during the Paris Motor Show and will go on sale before the end of 2014.

16 BMWs lose kidney grille in digital interpretation

16 BMWs lose kidney grille in digital interpretation

BMW without kidney grille / Theophilus Chin

Kidney grille introduced on the BMW 303

"Automotive manipulator" Theophilus Chin has envisioned 16 BMW models without the traditional kidney grille.

Nowadays, virtually all automakers have their own proprietary styling cues and one of the most popular design trademarks would have to be BMW's kidney grille. It all started in 1933 when the BMW 303 was introduced, a model which also was the firm's first car powered by a straight-six engine.

Now, Theophilus Chin has decided to eliminate the kidney grille from no less than sixteen modern BMW models, ranging from the 1-Series five-door hatchback to the i8 plug-in sportscar. It should be mentioned the kidney grille also has a functional role as it improves engine cooling, with the obvious exception of the i3 and i8.

Saabpocalypse 3.0?

We haven't heard much from National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) since a "short term cash problem" forced them to stop Saab 9-3 production in May but a new report is indicating the cash problems could be far worse than expected.

The Associated Press is reporting Saab supplier Labo Test has petitioned a Swedish court to declare NEVS bankrupt. According to the filing, NEVS owes Labo Test 150,000 kronor ($21,800 / € 16,320 / £15,985) and company hasn't paid since February.

NEVS declined to comment but the company has previously blamed their financial problems on Qingbo Investment not fulfilling their "contractual obligation to [help] finance the operations."

2013 VW Golf Mk7 Review

2013 VW Golf Mk7

The next 2013 VW Golf Mk7 may be your first choice for 2013 s biggest launch. VW's new MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) architecture has made its production debut in the 2012 Audi A3, but it's the next Golf that will be the mass-market litmus test of the new modular platform.

The new family of EA211 TSI petrol engines are dimensionally very similar but easily configurable to produce different levels of power. No tricks have been missed when it comes to cutting weight here either. The aluminium blocks are 16kg lighter and other major parts have been lightened too, so the 1.4-litre comes in at 22kg lighter than its EA111 predecessor. The new 1.2-litre engines produce 85PS and 105PS with 121lb ft and 129lb ft torque. The 1.4-litre gives 122PS and 140PS with 148lb ft and 184lb ft torque.

Exhaust manifolds are cast as one into the cylinder head so the engines are extremely compact. They get a dedicated cooling circuit and the main engine has two cooling loops, top and bottom, to extract maximum efficiency. There are no fancy, twin-scroll turbochargers, simple, single scroll compressors do the job saving weight and cost.
